Me when the cast and crew don’t agree with me: Well, authorial intent is a sham and isn’t the measure of a work’s message. It has to be interpreted in the context of the production and narrative itself, so even if a particular actor or writer wrote or acted a certain scene a certain way, it still has to be considered within the context of the complete work. And we haven’t even started talking about the wider cultural milieu yet and how the meaning of art isn’t derived solely from author or audience, but from the back and forth between them. Ultimately, an author can’t dictate the meaning of their work. Once it’s out there it’s out there.
