Friendly reminder this man used the Wilson translation as "source" which scholars named the worst translation of Homer.
also shoutout to @gemsofgreece for the term Nolan fatigue while we're at it
Oh, didn’t you know Batman, intergalactic fighters, Viking ships and rappers in Mycenaean Greece are creative choices rooted in actual archaeological credibility?
Thou art correct, I humbly apologize to the british guy, my ottomanly corrupted ass' knowledge is insufficient to judge his groundbreaking masterpiece. I only knew of archaeological research about spine helmets, Robin Hood, Frodo Telemachus Baggins, Antinous' sleazy golden underwear, the Greeks that while they lived in the mediterranean they looked like pink people from the north that somehow didnt burn into a lobster-red crisp, the Kenyan twin queens, the love triangle, the grim dark ugly mediterranean, a godless story that still has one goddess in it for some reason, that Homer was the George Lucas of his time and an ancient "Greece" setting that looks like it came out of the worst anti-hellenic western classicists' asspull takes, so I stand corrected, my knowledge is woefuly incomplete, but now this has been corrected. But oh no, wait, my vulgar modern "Greek" tendencies surfaced, lemme rephrase that last part Sir Christopher "geniousness incarnate" Nolan Sir, i meant takes they pulled out of a very dark and hairy place
Friendly reminder this man used the Wilson translation as "source" which scholars named the worst translation of Homer.

Friendly reminder Nolan ghosted Dimitrios Katsikis, "the modern Hepheastus", a Greek guy who made historically accurate Mycenean armours.
For this. This mix of Batman and Robin Hood.
Ma'am this is slander, how could you speak of the Bridgerton costume designer in that undeserved way, she and Nolan put so much effort into making this, you cant just leave out Frodo Baggins & Viking Mentor from the wonderful mix they've achieved. I mean look at all this gloriousness!
Frodo Baggins leaves Westeros with Viking Mentor in a Viking ship to visit Robin Hood and comes back again
If that doesnt scream Hellas I dont know what does
Theres also some guy Odysseis whatshisname in the story but who cares about him he is basically the guy to blame for the Trojan War from the way they talk about him and he's in the story just to get punished & "deconstructed" so he can repent for all his crimes, lets focus on "Telly" as Hathaway called him, and the women Homer "forgot to flesh out" and thus our british lord & savior of Greek mythology Nolan had to do it for him. How kind

Still can't believe they had the audacity to use a real surviving copy of the original odyssey for this damn piss crap of a movie
Well they did give Kim Kardashian Marilyn Monroe's iconic dress to wear, despite them knowing that Kim wouldn't fit in it and it would also reduce its historical value.
I guess, when you pay big, you get the big stuff, so I wouldn't be surprised if Universal made a very generous donation to the Library that has the manuscript in return for some exposure.
Either way, when you see the marketing effort vs the response for this movie, no wonder Universal is trying to pull the big cards - the same Universal that shut down comments on X (and probably other social media too) under the Odyssey trailer.
Of course he managed to get it because it's in UK among the many other stolen artifacts the British proudly display without caring to return them (looking at you British museum) so Nolan being a British knight had no issue taking this thing to use it as a marketing tool
So, after watching Lupita Nyong'o's interview about her role in Nolan's "Odyssey", I have to say, I couldn't be more disappointed in Hollywood. Believing you are the centre of the world and claiming to embrace differences, while rejecting and replacing different cultures, is just so ironic, and I dare say typical for American directors. Greek history and mythology has always been a subject of interest for producers, bringing millions in the film industry, and yet nothing feels original or even familiar to the greek eye. Of course it is impossible to know everything and bring a whole myth to life, but the least they can do is put a little effort in it. It is no longer a matter of historical accuracy, but a matter of respect; something neither the director or most of the actors in this movie have shown. Some of them even have the audacity to "cancel" Homer, for not giving the women extra screen time. Now we know who did their reading before auditioning for certain roles.🙄
As for the choice of casting Lupita Nyong'o as Helen, I am now more skeptical than ever. It is not about the color of her skin; it's because she's not Greek. It is not about her not being talented enough; it's because she doesn't understand Homer's work, and isn't interested in doing so. Beauty is subjective, and Helen's appearance cannot be determined by anyone who hasn't seen her. However, she was Greek. Not African, not Asian, not Scandinavian. And Greeks have their own beauty. Too bad Hollywood isn't good enough to fully grasp it...
His Interstellar self and his Odyssey self are two different people.
Dude is real life's Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Cringy dialogue aside, i think a reason he went for USAmerican accents is also because of Travis Scott, seen here (2:42)
as the bard with his staff, as a character inside the movie not just narrating it from afar, in fact he is Ithacan, and yes Ithaca was pretty much ancient LA if you look at him & the extras. He already removed anything Greek from the language spoken even the accents, so the usual choices were British or USAmerican, both of whom are ridiculous alone or together for Odyssey, but now he has to account for Travis too, and since he wants to emphasize "ancient Greek oral poetry was basically rap" Travis will speak in AAVE (African American Vernacular English), in it's characteristic cadence. Of course he'd make all the dialogue & accents "earthy american" can you imagine two usamerican accents AND british in a story in ancient Greece, or worse AAVE for the bard and british for the rest of the characters? But then again he made Ithaca as ancient LA, would this be where he drew the line? Idk (siiigh) but now i'm wondering what kind of accent/dialogue Helen & Klytemnestra will have since nolan took Nyong'o 's input seriously instead of any Greek's. Here's Travis in a YT short talking about the Odyssey. I wonder what HIS input was on his role that Nolan took seriously -_-

Surely this cant be true?! This is fucked up! What the hell!!!!
Here the tweets for those who aren't on X
So on top of the childish "Trojan Horse pop corn bucket", the 'Odyssey-" inspired watch with Nolan's (!!!) signature on it and the audience seeking the pieces of Agamemnon's helmet, now he also puts an ancient manuscript in danger of improper flashlights and unnecessary exposure for clout.
On the other side, audience reactions have been so effing negative now they're trying to pull out the "respect of the source material" trump card which.... is exactly what they'd been selling us all along and the reason why this movie fails.
As i had said, we're now growing past the nemesis stage, now we're heading on in tisis mode.

Did you see that bit about the accidental rainbow on the Odyssey set? How much more can somebody hate color χαχαχα αααααχ.
Yeah, while I understand that a giant rainbow would give silly vibes during a dramatic scene with everything that was going on in Ithaca, it's really funny if you interpret it as the whole universe imploring Nolan to add a little bit of colour at this point XD
Here's a screenshot posted online from one of the unedited behind the scene shots
Yeah.
Theres more snippets here from vibrant or at least less grim looking scenes that they then changed & muted the colours, but i can't take screenshots.
We also get our first look at our bard who will not just narrate but be IN the movie, as an Ithacan apparently.
And I know y'all are sitting there thinking nothing in this movie looks Hellenic because you dont have enough trust in the superior vision of our genius director, but hush, have no fear, I'm here to put your worries at ease by delivering the words of the visionary himself, which i found again while looking for the screenshot a few minutes ago & it finaly clicked what his genious meant
“With fantasy, there’s always the risk that the audience disconnects, just as they often devalue a dream sequence. On Inception, the entire grammar of the film was designed to give dreams weight and gravity so they truly mattered. It’s the same approach here:
the myth has to have its own reality for people to believe in it.
Odysseus is, of course, a storyteller, but I didn’t want to make a film about the telling of the story. I wanted to tell the story.”
.....
See, theres nothing to worry about changes that completely strip the Odyssey of anything Hellenic, he removed Hellas altogether and placed the story in an Alternate Reality! And in this wild AU he can do whatever he likes! How did Lupita Nyon'go put it, "the story spans worlds, and the cast is what it is because its representative of the world" Now that makes more sense. See, nothing to worry about! Don't you feel better now -_-
Do we have any mention of Penelope's appearance besides ivory-armed in Homer or later sources? I'm trying to do a design for her for a drawing, thanks.
Yes we do. Albeit more general than something specific like Odysseus for instance. I had made one small post of her
💬 0 🔁 8 ❤️ 50 · First she cleansed her face with a divine ointment, similar to the one the Kythereia (Aphrodite=lady of Kythera or the one
We know she is pale of skin which later on was enforced by Athena that made her "whiter than ivory" and we probably expect her to be more stoutly built given that also Athena seems to be increasing that regal built even more. Now we can assume she is tall for a woman or at least tall-ish that Athena enforced more with her spell. We also know she was very beautiful given that she made several heads turn towards her.
We do not have clear hints on her eye or hair color. Art of ancient Greece tends to emphasize dark shades for her hair while in later art such as medieval or 19th century art she oftentimes drawn as brunette. Her hair is also shown as wavy or curly-ish as per ancient Greek beauty standards
I think to this day Irene Papas is one of the best if not THE best model for Penelope especially as she played her in the series "L'Odisea" in 1968
Dunno ever since I enjoyed her as Penelope there, there hardly is any better source material for her to be honest! She looks like an ancient Greek statue and she brings out that commanding presence of hers as well as some of that sweetness and sadness.
The statue by Leonidas Drosis is also a marvelous example for her

Lupita
Said very clearly said she had no idea what the Odyssey even was before Nolan told her she's playing Helen of Troy
Makes a huge fuss on "representation" but still went ahead and played not one, but TWO Greek women
Says we should just accept ut because the Odyssey is "mythology" and claims the cast is "representative of the world" (yes, hun. A world that completely excludes the very people that gave you the Odyssey)
Now "shites" on Homer claiming he's spent "too little" on the "female perspective". (Meanwhile Emily Wilson said that 'the way Homer portays both sexes is very modern" (- I don't know what that means either)
Meanwhile, the key female characters in Homer off the top of my head
Athena
Helen
Andromache
Persephone
Cassandra
Circe
Calypso
Nausicaa
Chrysseis
Arete
All of them being completely different characters with fleshed out personalities (hence the different imagery associated with each name)
When asked "what would you ask Homer about your portrayal/this adaptation, if he watched the movie sitting next to you" the other actors answered sth respectful (some even looking a little worried) or at least an acceptable PR reply. Lupita leaned over to "stare at" Homer "sitting" next to Himesh, and lectured him, the native author/storyteller of foundational cutural poems of a multi-millenia old civilization completely foreign to her, poems that she knew virtualy nothing about before accepting the roles, that "he didnt write women better and didnt give them enough attention" *in epic poems regarding war, and returning from war, ie. subjects concerning primarily men, who face the most brutal reality of war, and in this case Greek men specifically* then procceded to claim the British man did it SO much better, and thus allowed her, the Kenyan woman, to dig into the roles when Homer didnt.
Setting aside Klytemnestra not being needed to be fleshed out in the odyssey at all & she has her own stories, which she would know if she cared to study Greek mythology & ancient Greek tragedies. Setting aside even the insult to the amazing, inspirational (for the heroines), fleshed out female characters who werent deemed good enough for her. Her arrogance is just infuriating. She was called out for being a hypocrite & not respecting cultures foreign to her and instead of taking this as an opportunity to learn & be educated she is doubling down on the entitlement & dismissive attitude. Not even Nolan, who was also infuriating in his dismissive arrogant reply, leaned over to lecture & antagonize Homer "sitting there" aka the empty spot which very much symbolises the erasure of him & Greek civilization btw.
