I don't have time for tumblr discourse they're calling the very hungry caterpillar degenerate art over on twitter
good art is when something looks like real life, the more real it looks the more better the art. abstracted figures give my trad children nightmares, one time they were exposed to cubism and couldn't go outside for a week
The thing is, I can understand the idea of wanting to expose your child to things that you consider worth seeing. It's the same reason people take kids to see natural parks and such, because even if they don't understand it, it can instill a sense of wonder into the world. You don't want them drowning in the printed equivalent of cocomelon, where it's all fluff no substance.
But on the other hand, the approachability of simple art is SO important to cultivate young minds, to help them understand that anyone can do art. Even big businesses behind the artists understand that if a child feels like they can recreate it, they feel closer to it. That's why so many Pokemon are simple and only a couple colors. Why the cast of Sesame Street is all so simple. Simplicity breeds recognition, which breeds recreation, which leads to experimentation.
So the answer is: both. Fuck you, ultimate fence-sitter.
