As a Ravenclaw myself, despite how immoral it was, I think his scheme was quite brilliant and creative. And based on how no one was able to figure it out before he told Harry and Ron about it, you have to be cunning and witty and charming enough to pull through flawlessly. This man made a whole ass scam to make it big from only a weird story and a small idea, and then actually succeeded in fooling everyone. So I can argue that yes, Gilderoy Lockhart was an absolute asshole and a scammer, but his way in doing so was undoubtedly smart and cunning.

Also the swearing seems so force at times, I snorted when Rosalind said that last line in the last episode.
