Tonight I knew my mother...
My parents were never married. My mother gave birth to me while she was still in college. She hid me from her own family and I had never met any relative from her side.
After she gave birth to me, she immediately gave me away to my father’s side and I grew up under the care of my aunt because my dad had to leave and work abroad.
It was my aunt who raised me ever since. She was there for me when I uttered my first word, when I took my first steps, when I marched through the stage during high school graduation and when I finally turned 18 years old. She has given me so much more than I deserved considering that I’m not her own child. Nevertheless, she took care of me, loved me and supported me unconditionally and I am very thankful to have her in my life.
Talking about my mother with my father’s family was a sensitive topic. Even when I was still a child, I could already sense that they never actually liked her. They never said that they hated her nor did they destroy her name in front me, but they never said that they approved of her either. I guess they just couldn’t stomach the fact that my own mother left me and abandoned me without leaving any trace. No one knew the reason why. I didn’t. They didn’t. I’ve always wondered as to why she left me. It wasn’t the kind of question that lingers every day and night, but it’s the kind of question that comes and go and still remains unanswered. There’s a part of me that’s eager to know why and there’s a part of me that wants to let it remain as it is. I’ve always thought that knowing about my mother would be an insult to my aunt. She told me that it was okay with her if I were to question about my mother’s existence but in the back of my mind I kept thinking that maybe she’d feel that she was never enough to completely fill up the hole that my mother left open. I kept my thoughts from my family because I was scared that they’ll think I’ve been ungrateful for everything they’ve done for me. I thought talking about my mother wouldn’t hurt anymore but now do I only realize that the pain never really went away; it just remained buried under the deepest parts of my heart, because before every other person that had the audacity to leave me, it was my own mother. My mother was the very first person who left me.
After my mother gave me to my father’s family, she came back after three years. She was with us for a while before she had to leave for Taiwan (or so I remember that’s how it went). Even though she was with me when I was three, I’ve never really had pleasant memories of her. She wouldn’t allow me to go out and mingle with other kids. She would tell me to sleep in a supine position so that it wouldn’t affect my posture. Good heavens the woman wouldn’t even let me hug any of my pillows! and I was only three! She’d always push me to be an overachiever. She was very strict with her own rules. This was the reason why I never really did like my mother, too. To the very eyes of the three year old me, she wasn’t a mother but a disciplinarian. For some reason, I was relieved that she left for Taiwan. Our communication has been cut off after that. There were speculations that she got pregnant or that she had another family. Of course, those speculations came from my relatives who never really did like her as well.
By the time I was 9, we saw each other again. It was the first time I saw her after 6 years and I didn’t know it at the time, but it was also the last. We spent a day together before she had to leave for Dubai. My aunt knew about it and was actually supportive that we bond as mother and daughter. The whole time we were together I remember I never addressed her as “mom” or “mama”. Whenever I talked to her I tried to get in directly to what I had to say. I never felt her motherly presence because all I could recall about her was the disciplinarian that I wouldn’t want to be with. She tried though; she tried to make conversation and ask about my likes and dislikes but somehow she didn’t get through me. I didn’t feel the connection. I felt nothing at all.
From then on we still communicated until I was 15. Our way of communication was through e-mails. She’d ask me about school and I’d tell her if I needed anything. She used to send me money for my allowance and school. I thought to myself at least she’s trying to make up for the lost years by helping us financially. Until one day, she just disappeared. She stopped replying to any of my messages and it just left me wondering why. What could I have done wrong? All these years I just wanted to know why. It made me feel like I was the daughter she never wanted. Was I never enough? Why? Why could she have left me, her only daughter?
—————
Tonight I had dinner with my mother’s sister. A year ago she messaged me on Facebook and apologized on my mother’s behalf. We communicated ever since. I talked to my aunt about her and my father know about her as well.
But tonight was different.
My mother’s sister asked me to join her and her husband for dinner and asked if I could keep everything to myself. I didn’t tell my aunt or my dad that I was meeting her tonight. Tonight was my decision and I’m glad I went to meet her. It was the first time that I saw her and she’s the only person from my mother’s side who really went all the way and tried to contact me.
She was kind, sweet and joyful—totally opposite as what I can remember from my mother. I instantly felt a connection with her. Over dinner, she told me about their travels with her husband until we finally came to the main topic: my mother. She told me my mother was very sensitive when it comes to talking about me too. She told me that my mother has been very sad and alone for the past few years. Also totally opposite from the life that I expected my mother to have lived. She said my mother made friends but never really kept any of them. She was secretive and aloof; she just wanted to be alone. When I asked if my mother has another family, she said there was none. All these years I thought my mother abandoned me because she has a new family already. But i was completely wrong. From the way I see it, my mother is lost.
Her sister told me she’s emotionally unstable. She used to cry all the time. My mother is currently in Paris and I guess even staying in the City of Love couldn’t fix her. After I knew what my mother’s current situation is, I couldn’t help but feel bad. Sure it was very selfish of her for leaving me to prioritize her personal interest but what else can I do about it? I tried putting myself in her shoes: she got pregnant at the age of 21, she wasn’t able to finish her studies, she had an awful fight with my dad and my family never really accepted her. Maybe I was the constant reminder of how her life went downhill.
Her sister mentioned that my mother is aware of how I’m doing right now (Bingo, totally got my stalking skills from her. No doubt about that). She also told me the actual reason why my mother left me: she was embarrassed and at the same time, she wanted to protect me. My mother apparently felt like I deserve a better life than she could offer and she thinks that is only attainable if I were to stay with my father’s family. She also wanted to keep me away from all the gossip and rumors that go around their neighborhood. Knowing that, I finally understood my mother a little more. Although I couldn’t help but think that it’s because she was never ready to be a mother in the first place. They never planned to have me but I’m still thankful they gave me the opportunity to see the world. Maybe she felt like she was robbed from a life that she could’ve tasted if I hadn’t came any sooner. I guess she needs time to heal and transform herself into a better person. Maybe by then she’d have the courage to talk everything to me personally. Until that time comes, I’ll make sure I’m already the person that she could’ve been proud of.
After the talk that I had with my mother’s sister, I felt a little bit lighter; like a thorn’s been lift off from my chest. I guess in some way my questions have been answered.
For the past few years, I kept thinking it was alright to have the questions remain unanswered, but now I see it’s better to know the answers yourself. Knowing more about my mother and her family made me realize that I got certain traits from them. Not only did I get an answer as to why she left but I also got to know more about myself too. Like my mother, I like Italian cuisine. I inherited my mother’s dimples, hair and even her voice.
I’ve always thought that I’m already whole as a person, but little did I know that pieces of me are still missing and that only my mother could complete those pieces. I’m a part of her and she’s a part of me, whether I deny it or not. You could never actually know yourself until you know your past and how you came to be.
This night made me realize that the answers you seek aren’t enclosed between four familiar walls, but that they are out there in the open and you have to search for them on your own.
A Thousand Word Letter For My Ideal Partner
Growing up as an only child, my family had always kept their eyes on me. I was their little princess in our very own kingdom. They have always treated me as if I was the damsel in distress locked up in a tower. I was always guarded. “Be careful with your heart”, they said. But my life story is no fairytale and no prince charming is out there to sweep me off of my feet. From a transition to watching Disney movies to watching movies that actually teach you about the real deal when it comes to love made me realize that you don’t need a prince to save you—you have to save yourself. I am always cautious whenever I feel like I’m starting to catch feelings for someone. I don’t fall in love easily. I rationalize what I feel because love is a battlefield and you have to be on guard of putting your heart on the line. My aunt has always told me to raise my chin up high, and my standards even higher; to not settle for less when you think you deserve the best.
I want someone who is, above all, a total gentleman. Chivalry doesn’t have to be dead, it can be resurrected. I want someone who will treat me the way a lady should be properly treated and respected. I want someone who would still open doors for me, offer their coat on a cold shivering night and reassure that I get home safely. I want someone who is romantically spontaneous; someone who knows how to surprise his woman with a candlelight dinner under the stars and flowers on a pretty random day. I want someone who dresses well. I want someone who can both pull of a lavish suit and a white shirt with a pair of denim jeans. He doesn’t have to look like a model from a high fashion magazine, he just needs to be comfortable, look confident and know how to handle himself. I want someone who is raised with good manners. Proper etiquette will always go a long way. You can never go wrong with a decent man.
I want someone who is intelligent. I will always prefer substance over style. I am fascinated with people who has so much more to offer than just their looks. I like having profound conversations with someone who can share their opinion about anything under the sun—may it be something as serious as political and religious views, and current issues around the world, or something that’s as silly as a hilarious viral video on Facebook. I want someone who can deal with my inner nerd and critical remarks, but can still be able to spice up a few witty comebacks. I want someone who values their education as much as I value mine. I want someone who perseveres in his studies; someone whose intellect can amaze others. Because let’s face it, at the end of the day, a pretty boy can only lift you off the ground, but a guy with brains can take you to the moon.
I want someone who is artistic. I want someone with an eye that appreciates art, literature and photography as much as I do. I want someone who paints his life with polychromatic moments and continues to search for some color in this black and white world. I want someone who reads. I want someone who understands that a novel isn’t just a book with a bunch of words put together, but that it contains a mystery waiting to be unfold by the reader. I want someone who writes; a person who spills his heart out and uses this as ink for writing simple words yet turns them into a masterpiece. Actions always do speak louder than words but there is always genuine beauty in poetry. I want someone who sees the world through the lens of a camera; someone who adjusts his focus when his life starts to blur. I want someone who values the importance of every shot he takes because every photo will always contain a story behind them. The familiarity of the captured moment will always bring you home. And that’s the thing about artistic people, they always leave a mark; it can be a painting, a sketch, a poem or a photograph. Something will always draw you back to them.
I want someone who is ambitious. I don’t like the idea of being idle. I want someone who spends time practicing and enhancing his expertise—it could be a sport, an instrument or any other skill. I want someone who is sure of what he wants to become and what he wants to achieve. I am always amazed by people who are very passionate and I want to be with someone who is driven to reach their goals. I want someone who knows how to balance his time and his priorities. I don’t want someone to have their whole world revolve around me. It would make me feel like I’m on a leash trying to get out from my owner’s very tight grip and I don’t ever want that to happen. I want someone who is independent. I want someone who can do things alone and is challenged by doing it on his own; the type of person who can get things done by himself and who can take care of things by himself. I need someone who will face every responsibility that is handed to him. I want someone who is dedicated, loyal and committed to his work and his family.
I want someone who is family-oriented. I grew up with my aunt and my grandfather taking care of me with both of my parents out of the picture and that’s the reason why I want to build my own complete happy family in the future. With that being said, I want someone who is loving and caring to his parents and siblings no matter how old they are already, and who is able to maintain close family ties; someone who would make his family always on top of his priorities and never leave them behind. I want someone who is God-fearing. I want someone who will uphold the values and principles he has learned in their household and will bind them together with his faith for the Lord. I want someone who will take me to the altar and profess his love for me in front of our Divine Creator; someone who isn’t afraid to hold my hand and show me to the world.
Lastly, I want someone who will take me for who I am no matter what. I can be difficult to deal with, but all I ever ask is for someone who will stay. People have always come and go in my life and it’s the ones who stayed that are worth keeping. Like how one of my favorite quotes go: “A smooth sea has never trained a skilled marine”. There will always be bumps along the road and it will never be a smooth ride, but it will all be worth it; being with the right person will always be worth it. Challenges are simply there to test the strength of your relationship. You will be hurt and you will feel the intensity of the pain, but you will survive. Your scars will remind you that someone so fragile can immerse as someone so strong. No one ever knows who will become our partners in life. That is always the mystery that we have to solve along our journey and if you’ve found the person who complements you, never let them go.
To my ideal partner, you could exist outside the realms of my thoughts or you could continue to be just a figment of my imagination, but I do hope that we will be able to meet someday and when that time comes, maybe I could finally tell myself why it never worked out with all the other people. If ever you’re out there, please wait for me—wait for me to become the person that I am ought to be.
During the last few days of 2014, all i wanted was to be happy. Genuinely happy. I even wrote about it during December 31, 2014. So has writing on the last day of the year become a year-ender tradition? Maybe. And here’s me again, writing another not-so-obligatory year-ender post. Well it’s true what they say: a year can change you.
It’s funny how i can still perfectly remember everything i wrote down exactly a year ago. I was 18 and broken. Every word i wrote splurged out with emotions. I was writing my heart out. Writing was a way to ease the pain i’ve felt back then. I craved the new year as if it was fresh water ready to cleanse my entire being. Looking back, i remember my words and i remember the old me hurting and going through all the pain. But as i read through my own words now, i don’t feel the pain anymore. All i see now are words–just mere words of what used to be. And that’s what makes me happy the most, because i was able to let go and be free.
2015 is hands down one of the best years of my life. I started the year with a clean slate. It was a new year, same old me but happier. I had a lot of adventures, been to new places and met awesome people. This year, my aunt and grandfather from the states finally came home after 7 years. It was really grand since it’s one of the few moments where our family and relatives got together for a reunion. Flashback to the time i snuck out of the house to go see Ed Sheeran’s concert. But who am i kidding, it’s Ed fucking Sheeran! Our bohol escapade during summer was one of the highlights for my year too. It was my first time to see the beauty of that island. Our trip to bacolod was another adventure worth remembering. It wasn’t planned at all. It was a spur of the moment decision and everyone of us was just a definite go. And of course, all the fun and crazy nights in between the months of the year sure aren’t something i could forget. Being on my third year in college was the absolute topsy turby emotional coaster for me. All the struggle i had gone through as a student; the fear of failing and the glory of passing. Not only did my course push me to my limits intellectually, it pushed me to testing the capacity of my emotional stability as well. But nevertheless, it was a perfect balance between school and fun. I don’t know how i was able to manage it, but somehow i did.
A year ago, i was writing on the last day of the year to forget. But this year is different. I’m writing on the last day of the year to say thanks. Yes, a year can definitely change you. Last year, i was 18 and broken. Now, i’m 19 and happy. This year has helped me grow and learn more about myself. To everyone who stayed with me throughout the year, thank you for always sticking by my side and encouraging me to do better and be better. To those who left, thank you for making me realize that people will always leave no matter what their reasons may be. To everyone who’s been a part of my 2015 in general, thank you for the 365 days of journey.
I smiled, i laughed, i cried, i took risks, i loved and i lived. It has been an amazingly incredible year! I am forever thankful to the Lord for a bountiful year of blessings. He has given me so much more than what i’ve asked for. I’m bidding farewell to 2015 and welcoming 2016 with a smile. I am excited for the new year and everything that’s in store for me. I can sense it will be another great year ahead.
You make the year, the year doesn’t make you.
Happy new year everyone!
And it was my fault that i succumbed to the idea of you--of us. I knew from the start that it won't work and that it never will, but i gave it a shot anyway. You were the perfect mix and match of mischief and mayhem. You never were the right guy to begin with. But maybe, just maybe, i got tired of sticking to the right guy and i just wanted to be wrong for once. And you were the right kind of wrong that i needed. Selfish as it may sound, but i wanted you. I've always had.

You should be angry. You should be so, so angry, but you never are. Every time the beasts in your bones start to boil, you silence them. And how dare you. They are not creatures, they are warning signs painted bright yellow, yet you still ignore them. You should be so, so angry. But the waves in your brain are seen as a calming thing in your eyes, when everyone else can see the storm you’re sailing fast into. You can’t predict your own shipwreck. You should be so, so, so angry. Your world has been violently uprooted by people who have no business digging their hands into your dirt. How you have become more doll to toy with lately than powerful like the voodoo once infused in you. You should be so, so, so, so angry. But you’re not. You’re just sad.
an internal monologue from my favorite personal demon // Haley Hendrick (via haleyincarnate)
Bec i need this in my blog
“Where are we going?” “I told you. It’s a secret.” He smirked as he was speeding down a road i’ve never been in before. “Alright we’re here.” I was captivated by the view of the city lights. It was beautiful. I sat at the edge of a barrel and closed my eyes for a few seconds. The sound of nature at 10 pm and the wind against my face. I just let the moment take me away. “So?” “I love it. It’s amazing.” He sat beside me and we were just sitting there, in silence, appreciating the beauty of the scenery. He held my hand and i felt his breathing on my right ear. “Did i surprise you?” I was never a fan of surprises, but he was different. He was able to break through the bricks that kept me guarded. I never imagined being with someone i barely knew until he came along. He was unexpected. All of this was unexpected. I was never a fan of surprises, but he became my favorite one. I looked back at him, smiled and said, “Yes. Yes, you did.”

I am a dead writer. I write bittersweet poetries and tragic love stories. To me, love is just a facade that is innate in human nature. Until he came along. He didn’t know me. I’d be happy enough if our paths cross each other along the hallway. To him, that encounter may be nothing, but to me it was absolutely everything that could make my entire day. The thought of him lingers from day in and day out. All i did was look at him from afar. He had eyes that glimmer into a shade of dark brown whenever a ray of light struck his face. And his smile. Oh god his smile. He had a smile that could instantly light up a whole town; a smile that could melt any girl’s heart. He was the perfect definition of a Prince Charming. He became my favorite character; an ideal man in a realistic world. He’s a classic and always on the right timing. Damn it, he’s amazing. But i was no Cinderella. I wasn’t the type of girl he’d fix his eyes on. I was nothing but a girl living behind her shadow. It was a Wednesday night. We just got off from a meeting for our presentation that’s due the following week. I checked my watch and it was 7:10pm. I was in a rush. I had to get home before i get caught in any traffic jam. I was speeding towards the door when i heard a voice call out my name, “Hey Bethany”. I looked back and saw a silhouette of a guy walking towards me. One. Two. Three steps forward. Who could it be? Four. Five. Six steps forward. Is this who i think it is? Seven. Eight. Nine steps forward. I can hear the sound of my own heart beating. Ten. “Need a ride home?” Emotions rushed through me and delight overpowered my pessimistic soul. He knew me after all. Crazy as it seems but, he made a dead writer want a happy ever after.

A Thousand Miles From You
"I honestly can't wait for 2015" These are the words i uttered as the countdown to the new year started. I've always loved the idea of a new year; it's a one big canvas to fill up with new adventures, hopes and dreams, a full year-round journal to jot down and correct your mistakes, an opportunity to start anew on a clean slate, and a chance to break free from the entanglement of the past. I have never craved for the taste of a fresh start ever before. It's the kind of longing that i deeply want to get a hold of. On New Year's Eve, every second drawing closer to the crack of midnight felt like hope. And as the clock struck 12, "Finally", I said to myself. I am now a few steps away from achieving something that's been revoked from me during the previous year: Happiness. Yes, 2014 was a giant tsunami of unfortunate events that destroyed every window to my happiness. It literally sucked everything that defined me. It just flung me with all the negativity which left me frustrated--wondering if i even deserved it in the first place. The first half of the year was alright. Everything was running smooth and well. They all stayed perfectly still. The second half was when things started to fall apart. People decided to leave and things that i loved were ripped away from me. The second half was a nightmare. It was a 'calm before the storm' situation with only me involved. The sudden transition was absolutely difficult. I didn't know how to put my life back together with little pieces of everything still missing. I had no idea what to do. The emptiness was weighing me down and the silence was deafening. All my jumbled thoughts led to the same idea: the cause and cure is no different from one another. And if that's the case, if the cure would only cause more pain, then i refuse to take it. I had to save myself. I needed to erase everything that held me back. I needed to cut the strings that bind me with the remains of an unfinished story. I needed the hands of time to patch up the enormous hole that created a vortex within me. I needed to move on, to forget. And I needed to get all of these done before the year would end. I had a deadline to accomplish everything, to leave the things that aren't meant to be in my new year. But the exact opposite happened. I welcomed the new year with remnants from the past. I've always imagined the first few days of the year to be filled with relief, away from the grip of yesterday. But I guess it's not for me to tell when I would be able to feel the breeze of freedom. The bandaged wounds started to bleed and my heart started to shatter. I'm feeling it again. Feeling the pain all over again. The new year wasn't able to close the cut. Instead, it made everything feel fresh again. The intensity of the pain is too much for me to handle. If only this kind of pain exists in the medical field, i would read every book there is. But even this kind of condition is non-existent to medical practitioners. If only all the leukocytes in my body could heal everything inside of me that's tearing apart, i would do anything to get them to fight the pain. But even my lymphatic system knows there's no such thing as a broken heart. This was what i wanted to prevent, greeting a year with desolation circulating everywhere in my body. Happiness is the only thing i yearn for throughout the year. If it comes with a price, I've lost too much already. What's there left for me to pay?

All i want is a fraction of your time. But you can’t even spare a day to be with me, trade a few hours to see me, or bargain a couple of minutes to talk to me. I’m willing to offer my year, And I’m not even worth a second for you.
Emptiness filled her heart as she screamed his name and she just stood there listening to the sound of her own voice echoing nothing but loneliness.
He is just like the wind; He makes her feel his presence And then he goes away
You played the same song over and over again. You knew it by heart; You knew every lyric, every beat and every melody. You sang it to meEvery nightLike it had becomeYour daily routine. You sang it to meEvery nightWith a guitar in your handsAnd your heart up your sleeve. You told me it wasThe anthem of our love.As long as we’re together,Our song would last forever. As long as i had your love,You’d never stop singingOur song. But yesterday,I heard you hum a different tune.
Our Song, D.F.N.P
You were my cup of tea On a bright sunny day Now i'd rather Drink a cup of coffee On cold rainy nights

I've lost the one thing I'm terrified to lose: You
"Telling him you miss him doesn’t make you weak. Telling him you wish he was here with you doesn’t make you lose your dignity. Telling him your bones ache and your fingers tremble when you think of him doesn’t make you of any less worth. Telling him your heart hurts because he’s not with you doesn’t make you less respected. Telling him you feel lost and incomplete without him doesn’t make you desperate. Telling him you feel empty without his words to fill you doesn’t make you pathetic. By god, just pick up the phone and tell him. Don’t let him slip away, darling, don’t let him slip away."

The first post I had to reblog because god I just need this on my blog right now
