You can argue that President Kennedy was killed by powerful people in a massive conspiracy, and if you want to do that, you can further argue their motives, but those aren’t really safe arguments to make. It is fairly clear that President Kennedy was shot by a mentally ill person who had defected from the US to the Soviet Union.
Oswald doesn’t seem to have had many motives aside from feeling abandoned by the world and wanting to establish himself as a great man who would be remembered.
We’re all deeply bothered by the idea that one person can so completely change the course of history, especially if that person is an ill, weak, sad person. But it happens. In fact, it is bound to happen, and it will happen again and again throughout our lives. It is awful, it is sad, it will never stop being so. But unless you’re ready to dive deep into a mess of theories that the person with the rifle was not in fact the person who murdered President Kennedy, then there is no “they.”
“They” have done lots of evil things, and “they” did indeed kill great leaders. But the most likely possibility by far is that “they” had nothing to do with President Kennedy’s assassination.
None of that weakens the beauty and truth of what he says in the speech above, which we should be able to praise and appreciate without turning it into the reason for his assassination.
