Eloise is terrified and traumatised about childbirth.

Eloise does not like children.

Eloise feels trapped and condescended too when talking to (most) men.

Eloise is disinterested in the career that comes with being a high society wife: namely hosting events and managing a household.

Eloise wants to go to university and recieve an education.

Eloise is (or at least was) interested in working class revolutionary politics.

Eloise is made actively uncomfortable by the marriage market.

Eloise is witty and sarcastic and keenly aware that she doesn’t fit within the gender role of ‘high society wife’

Eloise feels trapped.

And on top of all of that.

Eloise simply doesn’t want to marry. That should be enough. Not wanting to marry should be enough of a reason.

Bridgerton is dead to me.

Bridgerton is now officially sexist, misogynist, anti feminist bullshit.

Dismissing one of the most significant proto feminist writers of the Regency Era because she does not "sufficiently value love" isn't even weak, feeble feminism anymore it is full on anti-feminist rhetoric.

Don't tell me Bridgerton isn't sexist propaganda, when one of the patriarchy's favourite talking points is that feminists are unlovable, and that women who protest against the patriarchy need the love of a good man to fix them.

I know this show is a romance and love is the endgame, but they didn't need to bloody well introduce feminism or Wollstonecraft into the show at all. They brought these things into the narrative, built up their importance for Eloise, simply to dismiss them and have Eloise outgrow them once she's ready for "love".

For anyone confused, imagine your mother forces you, an adult,to attend your 14 year old sister's etiquette classes. You cannot say no and you cannot leave under your sisters side under any circumstances. Also you are now in charge of accompanying her everywhere.

She also upset because of why Violet is forcing her. She declared she wanted to be a spinster. and Violet is punishing her for it in a very insulting way. She is treating Eloise as a child, indirectly suggesting that Eloise should act more mature like Hyacinth, all the while refusing to have any conversation with her daughter.

Let's be honest here, being compared to your siblings sucks. Being seen as less competent than your younger sibling especially sucks. And this kind of comparison would cause problems between most siblings at any age

For example: You, a child free woman, visit your hometown for a while till your sister gives birth. And the whole time you're there, your mother is also bringing up how nice it would be for you to have a baby (you've explained you're childfree) and saying you'll eventually want one cause it's only natural. She keeps forcing you to help your sister with everything (Setting up yhe crib, buying clothes, picking out a stroller, buying baby supplies). It's easy to see how resentment builds

I agree Eloises resentment is misplaced. She shouldn't take it out on Hyacinth. But lets be real, its not like she can talk to the cause of the problem, aka Violet too-busy-getting-dicked-down-to-be-a-parentvBridgerton.

And I don't blame Hyacinth for being angry about it. You could say she should be able to recognize Eloise is being mistreated by their mother, but giving grace to the fact that she is young with no other sisters at home I also think its a bit of desperation.

I’ve long grown suspicious of the side of historical romance enjoyers who seem to delight in finding new ways to say and imply and enforce this idea that women are only allowed to marry within their class—and that if they go outside of it, they must marry up. Or, if they marry down, then that man must still be wealthy, own land, and be “worthy” of her.

Fuck the poor. Fuck the thoughtful. Fuck the nice to her. Fuck the being delighted by her. Fuck the respecting her upon meeting her. Eloise needs a man who will make her struggle to become worthy of his respect. Eloise needs a man will force her to grow into a shape she never wanted to be in because the growth she has been capable of on her own is unimportant because it comes unattached to the dick of the most boring guy you’ve ever read about. Eloise needs to fall out of love with feminist scholars because the idea that she could ever join them, become their peer, or become anything like them is apparently stupid.

What Eloise is is a young woman seeing everyone around her submitting to a patriarchal system, and she happens to associate everything she doesn't relate to or agree w or like with said system. Especially when said things are weaponised against women (like "purity" culture, marriage, child bearing, submissive nature, etc.). She's angry because from where she stands, the women around her are ignoring, and even enforcing, these things.

the "she's all talk, no action" argument is weak, you're forgetting that it's established in the show itself that women in the regency era could not DO anything, they can't even get educated, the best they could do is rebel and stand their ground against their family, and making sure they're not or giving in to pressure.

the only way she can rebel out of her situation is to complain and be vocal about it, so yeah I don't want to see the "she's such a whiner" one more fucking time I swear. yk damn well you'd be whining too if you were told you do not have the autonomy to choose your future.

people romanticize the regency balls and costumes but also simultaneously apply modern logic when it comes to judging female characters (specifically eloise) on the show.

so yeah it's great and totally not misogynistic at all that you want her to "know her place" and that she should be forced to conform, swallow and accept the miserable circumstances she's beinv forced into 🥰

The reason why Eloise is being called a “pick me” or accused of “having the not like other girls syndrome” is because she is shattering that fantasy of women having free choice in a patriarchal society, raising uncomfortable questions for those women.

“You’re telling me I can’t marry and have children and be a feminist?” is such a straight white woman response, no less stupid or self-centric than people who, for instance, think that trans people living is an attack on cis people; or that Black liberation is an attack on white people. You’re not the center of the world and you’re not oppressed because people on the internet are criticizing the patriarchy. Who is oppressed are women like Eloise, who, despite being a fictional character, is mirror to a society that does not allow women the freedom of choice.

Liberal women love to single out the “pick me’s,” reflecting on their lack of empathy with women who don't conform to the norm. The patriarchy oppresses all women, but other women can perpetuate that oppression on their female peers by upholding the system. Eloise is not being let down by the men in her life but also the women.
