PART 1 PART 2 PART 3
When Will woke the warmth under his head was gone. Instead of his head resting on Mike's shoulder he found himself on his side on the worn leather couch, with the static TV playing.
Last night came flooding back to Will. The VHS getting stuck, watching the movie with Mike, falling asleep on Mike. Shit. Will turned to scan the room anxiety washing over him like a wave. Okay good no Mike. But Will knew at some point or another he would have to scale the rickety stairs and see Mike’s face. Will’s face flushes as he thinks back to that night. How could he have fallen asleep on Mike? God Will didn’t want to leave the basement ever again. How could he have done this!? It’s even embarrassing enough to think about. What if Mike figured out how Will felt? What if Mike now thought Will was gross? Or worse. What if Mike told the others??
Will tried to melt into the couch to hide until his stomach started protesting noisily. Will sighed in frustration, eyeing the stairs warily, before hauling his body up and climbing up the stairs to eat with the others.
Entering the dining room, Will saw an unusual sight. Mike sitting there all alone, placidly chewing on his cereal. His black curly hair frizzy and wild, sitting there like an angel with his ivory skin which reflected the morning light. Why did it have to be just Mike? Now Mike will ask Will about what happened, and then he’ll know. Where did the others go? Will’s mind turns into overdrive about the potential possibilities of what could happen making his stomach flip and knot. Maybe Mike doesn't know; or doesn't care, Will reassures himself.
Will, not even looking in Mike’s direction (which was very hard he had to admit), strolled into the kitchen calmly making himself a cup of coffee and a bowl of cereal sitting down quietly. The air reeked of silence as Will’s eyes darted from Mike to looking down at the table trying not to alert Mike of his staring. Despite the shame and the inevitable awkwardness, Will would do anything for either one of them to say something. For them to settle on the couch in the basement again and for Mike to hold him and press sweet kisses into his hair like he did in the bathroom that one morning. Will could still feel the ghost of Mike’s warm hands and soft lips on his skin and hair.
“Sleep okay?” Mike teases, a smug smile gracing his lips. Will almost spits out his coffee then and there.
“Shut up” he retorts with no real malice to his voice as he wipes the small amount of coffee that had dribbled past his lips. His eyes once again feel that all too familiar magnetic pull, now locked to Mike’s chocolate ones that dance with playfulness.
“Aw, hey come on Will. Seems like you had a good sleep, you were snoring pretty loud.”
“I don’t snore!” Will squeaks his face turning red. Mike chuckles to himself.
“I’m just kidding. Seriously though, it’s good you had a good sleep. I’m…I’m happy I was there” Mike says, an earnest expression tugging at his features. “I want-wanted, to make sure you were okay after the whole Vecna thing.”
The silence that now fills the room is a gentle, comfortable silence. A silence that prompted gentle touches and whisper laughs. It almost felt like they were on the cusp of something. Those sweet words could be said softly and they would float through the air like a melody.
The spell was suddenly broken by Holly Wheeler’s chipper voice.
“God get a room you two” she voices, her eyes darting between the two boys as disgust pales her bright face.
“What!?” the two boys exclaim at the same time defensively.
“You do the same thing Johnathon and Nancy do when they get all in love and stuff. I don’t need more of it in this house. One couple doing it is gross enough already.”
“Holly shut up!” Mike exclaims
“Where is Johnathon and Nancy and everyone?”
“Mom and dad are out anddddd Nancy and Johnathon are visiting their friends at the radio station. Something about painting.” Holly replies in a matter-a-factly tone. Despite this her eyes still drift between the two.
“Holly why don’t you play with barbies or something upstairs and shh and leave us alone” Mike tells her
“No. Besides, you two will be kept in your in love staring contest and thats sooo boring”
“Holly shut up! Me and Will… We aren’t. You have the wrong idea”
“So how do you explain those letters in your room Mike?” Holly says a cheshire grin pulling at her lips.
Will sees Mike’s face pale, his eyes dancing anxiously between Holly and Will.
Letters? Why would Holly bring up letters? Will knows that when he and Jane were in Lenora Mike wrote letters but only to Jane because they were dating. Did Mike have unfinished letters to Jane? Maybe he kept Jane’s letters? And what does that have anything to do with Will?
“Letters?” Will questions, raising an eyebrow at Mike who shoots him an ‘I’ll tell you about it later when she’s not here look’.
“Holly go away” Mike says
Holly's face almost puts two and two together and she smiles before skipping upstairs.
“Letters?” Will reiterates
“Let’s talk downstairs…I have a feeling she’s gonna eavesdrop” Mike says in a low voice standing quickly, leading the way to the basement.
Both boys head down to the basement. Will plops himself on his made mattress bed, leaning against the lower back part of the couch to support himself. Mike’s lanky frame bends down in front of him, grabbing a black and white record and putting it on. He awkwardly plops down next to Will, his legs laying out in front of him as the haunting guitar records ripple throughout the room.
“So ... .What was Holly going on about with the letters?” Will prompts
“You know when you were in Lenora…How I wrote letters for El?”
“Yeah”
“I wrote letters for you too”. Mike admits a sheepish expression on his face. Anger floods Will’s body. He wrote letters for me too? How dare he say he’ll write, he’ll call only for him to pussy out at the last minute?! Did Mike know how much grief and how much frustration he had put Will through, as he saw Jane collect the letters once every couple days. Will was livid. “It…I tried to call you. So, so many times. But El said Joyce was always on the phone for work. So I tried to write you. But I just felt that the letters weren’t enough. It…They always came out wrong.”
Wrong? The letters came out wrong but he sent El those shitty letters every week no issue? If he thought Jane’s were okay to send, how horrible were his ones to Will? Were they just one word with a smiley face?!
“And when I was writing them I realised something about myself. And it’s so embarrassing. I felt so guilty because of it…ashamed.” Mike says, his voice breaking. Holy shit is Mike Wheeler crying right now? Mike’s beautiful eyes had become puffy and red rimmed. Despite all his anger Will’s mind could only think one word about how Mike looked right now.
Beautiful.
“Though nothing will keep us together. We can beat them. Just for ever and ever” Bowie's voice echoes from the record player, distracting Will from Mike.
“I didn’t want you to not like the new Mike. Well, not like the Mike who now knows himself. And this thing I now know, I understand not a lot of people like it. I wish I wasn’t so ashamed about it, because you’re so nice Will, you would understand.” Mike croaks as tears spill from his eyes. Will’s face morphs into one of sympathy. Oh god, Mike had no idea how much Will could see himself in him right now. I could never hate you, I could never be disgusted by this new part of you; I feel ashamed because of my secret all the time too, I understand. Will’s mind echoes.
“I, I will be king. And you, you will be queen. And nothing will drive them away. We can be heroes. Just for one day.”
“Mike, you can tell me. I won’t judge. You can trust me”
“I’m gay Will. That’s why me and El broke up. That’s why I was so weird from you. Because…I think I’m in love with you Will.”
Oh. Oh.
“I, I remember. Standing by the wall.”
“I think I always have been… I just-” Mike’s confession is cut by Will. His hands gently cup Mike’s face as he brings them together for a sweet, quick press of the lips. Will feels Mike freeze. Yet this doesn't worry Will. All Will feels right now is elation. If this is what feeling high is like he now understands why Johnathon used to smoke so much of that shit. Mike Wheeler loves Will back. Mike Wheeler has always been in love with Will.
After a couple of seconds, Will feels Mike exhale through his nose, his body relaxing as his lips press back. Mike’s lips, despite being slightly chapped, are warm and soft. Will couldn't fathom how dirty his imagination had done him after all these years. It was better than he could’ve thought. Because it was real.
“And we kissed, as though nothing could fall”
They continued to kiss each other slowly, Mike’s hands curled into the hem of Will’s shirt and Will’s cheek now felt wet from rubbing against Mike’s falling tears.
“We could be heroes just for one day”
When the two broke, Will took in Mike’s delicious expression. There was Mike. His Mike, with tear stained cheeks and slightly swollen lips looking at Will like Will had hung the moon.
“Mike” Will breathed.
“Will” Mike sighed. Soon Will felt Mike’s slender arms grab him pulling him into a bone crushing hug, his hands threading into Will's hair.
Sure the both of them have hugged. Many times. But none was like this. Both boys clung to each other like honey, like it was their vow to never let each other go. Hands gripped at the flesh buried under clothes, arms flexing to deepen the embrace. Both boys' bodies heaved slightly as they sobbed into each other in pure joy. Mike was now Will’s Mike. And Will was now Mike’s Will. Like it should’ve been.
After embracing for a while, the two boys pulled apart and Mike’s hands went to cradle Will’s face.
“What?” Will slightly laughs as Mike’s eyes rove over his features.
“I didn’t know you…” Mike says in awe. Despite the ambiguous response Will knows what Mike is trying to get at. Mike had no clue Will felt the same. Mike had no clue that Will was gay. Will had to stifle his laugh. God, Mike Wheeler was oblivious.
“It’s really obvious Mike…I thought you knew”
“No. Not at all”
“Really? So ‘It’s not my fault you don’t like girls’ doesn't ring a bell?” Will teases
“Oh God don’t bring that up…trust me I wasn’t happy with myself for saying that” Mike groans putting his head in his hands.
The two boys' soft laughter and sniffles fill the basement bathing them in the warmth afterglow of joy. Mike’s hands cradle Will’s face once again.
“What are you doing Mike”
“Getting a good look at you” Mike replies softly, his eyes scanning his face whilst his fingers gently follow the ridges and dips of Will’s bone structure.
After a while of gentle stares and explorative touches, the boys had shifted from upright to laying down. Mike pushes his face into Will’s neck, both their eyes threatening to shut.
Will knew if this moment everything was right. Perfect even.

2.5k words, chapter title is "when i slept so soft against him"
PART 1 PART 2 PART 4
Will’s eyes snapped open. He felt the familiar tingle of his nerves from the warmth of Mike’s subconscious touch causing blood to rush to his face. Yet suddenly the arms tightened. Will felt the soft skin of Mike’s arms warp into a slimy, rough texture, Mike’s breaths were no longer gentle as they now morphed into low growls of an all too familiar voice. It was him.
Will’s body quickly scrambled up as the realization hit him, and turned to see a fleshy, slimy, figure; with those piercing blue eyes that made Will feel exposed. Vecna.
“Running so fast Will?”
“Get away from me. Get away.” Will chokes out.
“Did you really think this could happen Will? That he would accept you? That he would love you back?”
“Don’t bring Mike into this”
“William, were you naive to think that anyone could love you? Are you stupid enough to think someone could love a monster like you?”
“Stop.” Will’s feet walk him backwards as the monster strides towards him. The disgusting fleshy lips curl into a petrifying smile. Will’s face jerks back, his eyes closing shut, his lips quivering in fear as Vecna’s clawed talon reaches out to caress his face. The touch isn’t like Mike’s. Mike’s hands are warm, gentle, caring. The talons that stroke his cheek are rough, unforgiving and nauseating. Will feel like he needs to throw up.
Will is no longer sixteen. He is eleven. Trapped in that hell hole. Trapped with that horrific vine forcing its way down his throat. His thoughts are still shouting, no! No! No!
Will’s body quivers as his voice comes out raw. “You don’t know anything”
“Oh but I do, William. This world isn’t made for you. And like me you can do great things. We can do great things together, William.”
Will lets out a piercing cry.
Will’s jolted from sleep harshly, his body shaking not just from fear but from the gentle hands of the worried boy beside him.
“Will! Will! Wake up!”
Will gasps for air. His throat burns. His face feels scorched. His stomach boils. He quickly gets up running to the Wheeler’s bathroom.
Will’s body heaves over the toilet bowl. He is utterly disgusted.
Quickly, he feels a pair of hands patting and rubbing his back like his mother would when he was younger. Except these weren’t his mothers small hands…No they were larger, bonier, warmer…Mike.
After retching up all he could he slumps to the nearest wall wiping his mouth.
“Will, you okay?? Mike whispered, his mousy eyes scanning Will desperately.
“Mike…” Will’s voice broke as sobs began to rack his body. His mouth quivered as cool tears ran down his flushed cheeks. God how embarrassing. Mike’s arms encircled Will’s broad shoulders, rubbing his arm soothingly as his face pressed into Will’s coffee hair.
“It’s okay. You're okay. You’re safe.” Mike murmurs into his hair. Will couldn’t tell if Mike was trying to comfort Will or himself at his point. Mike’s hands continue to rub circles into Will’s arms and back as Will feels his lips press gently into his hair. Despite his crying and nausea Will tried to contain a smile. Mike Wheeler kissed his head. Mike Wheeler kissed him. But on the head.
Still counts either way.
Was Mike like him? Did Mike stare at the boys in movies like Will did, his eyes tracing their form appreciatively? Did Mike lay in bed at night and beg for the world to change? Did Mike feel shame when Mr Wheeler rambled at the dinner table about that “disgusting disease”?
No. No, surely not. This was purely platonic. Max did this all the time to comfort Jane when she was scared or drained. Then again, that was a girl thing. No. If Mike was like Will, he would know. And if there was one thing Will knew for certain. Mike Wheeler didn’t like boys.
“What happened Will? Was it a nightmare? Or did he…Did he speak to you”
“Both…He spoke to me…He wants me to join him. Said I was like him.” Will murmured against Mike’s shoulder. There was no way in hell Will was telling Mike what Vecna said. Not just because he and Mike had shared a bed, but because Will knew, deep down, Henry was right. Right about him. And it made Will want to crawl under his covers like he was a five year old.
“This world isn’t made for you”
“Are you stupid enough to think someone could love a monster like you?”
“Will, you’re not like him at all. You’re Will. You’re good and kind and smart and perfect. Will trust me when I say that. I know you” Mike says, pulling Will away from him to look at him earnestly. God Will loved him.
After a while of silence Mike spoke again. “Did he hurt you?” He whispered. Unlike before there was not just worry in his voice. There was something else. Anger.
“No…”
“Good…You have too many people who love you for him to do that. God I-We would send out an army after him if he did”
Will chuckled at Mike’s hyperbolic words, earning a smile out of Mike. Mike let go of him after a couple more minutes helping Will to his feet. Mike’s hand grasped Will’s as he led him back to his room and Will felt that familiar tug at his heart. However this time it wasn’t an ache. It was a flutter.
In Mike’s room Will realised how dark it was. Looking at the clock it read 3:15am. God, Will felt horrible. He woke his friend up at 3am and made him watch Will throw up and cry for 15 minutes.
Under the duvet Mike would not let go of Will’s hand. In fact, Mike even wrapped an arm around Will’s shoulders, making Will’s face even redder.
“Is this okay? I just want you to feel safe. I promise I won’t let him hurt you anymore Will.” Mike murmured. Will could not get over how close they were. He could smell Mike and the shampoo his mom brought at the grocery store. He could feel his hot breath fan over his neck. He could smell the spearmint toothpaste radiating from Mike’s mouth. Will nods curtly, settling into Mike.
A couple hours later, at a much more reasonable time Will’s eyes fluttered open. He couldn’t see though because all he could see was black. He felt a prickly calf slid in between his shins, an arm wrapping around Will’s shoulder tightly and nimble fingers tangling in Will’s hair. His ears burnt hot. Was he and Mike Wheeler…cuddling? In their sleep? Will was sure if Mike woke up right now he would leap apart from Will, shoving him off and giving Will that well acquainted disgusted look he used to get from his dad. Will tried to pry himself out of Mike’s grasp, slipping his arms out from resting against Mike’s waist and chest, yet to no avail Will was futilely pulled back in by Mike’s sleeping form. So he was stuck here. Stuck in the arms of the boy he was so hopelessly in love with. Unable to escape. So God must really have favorites. It definitely wasn’t Will.
After a couple of minutes of waiting Will felt Mike wake up.
“Mm morning” Mike rasped
“Hi”
Mike's sleepy face suddenly morphed into one of shame quickly as he got his bearings with the waking world. Oh here it comes, Will thought.
“Shit! I’m sorry Will I..I..This isn’t uncomfortable for you is it? I’m sorry I just wanted to make sure you were…safe.” Mike says, his voice wavering. In all his years of pining over Mike Wheeler, Will had never questioned Mike’s sexuality, until now. Because, Mike’s face had that look Will knew all too well written all over it.
‘Please don’t let him figure out my secret’.
“It’s fine Mike…Although can you let go of me though, you’re kinda crushing me” Will teases
“Sorry!”
The two boys quickly get up without a word heading downstairs.
The Wheeler dining table was quieter this morning. Holly was downstairs with her friends recovering from gorging on candy and staying up late; and Johnathon and Nancy ate quietly looking at the two boys questioningly. They must’ve heard.
“Micheal, why on earth were you banging around upstairs in the bathroom at three-o-clock in the morning?” Ted questioned, peering menacingly over his newspaper as he sipped on his steaming cup of coffee.
“Uh…” Mike stammered looking at Will anxiously “I fell off the bed and woke myself up and then I had to piss”.
“Language” Ted reprimanded. Will had always been afraid of Ted. Not just because he was Mike’s dad and barely said more than two words at a time (though that was definitely part of it). But because Will knew what people like Ted thought about people like him. Will remembered after he went missing, that he heard Ted had said that another “queer” took Will and that “they were infiltrating Hawkin’s”. Will still felt queasy knowing that Ted had shared that so casually to the other parents at school over a beer. The worst part of all of it, is that Ted still said things like that. Whether it was when the news played on the TV or over dinner, spouting cruel words about people like Will and how they were so "unnatural, God was punishing them with this disease”. Will still remembers how Ted looked at him that night. His eyes reading “What have you done?” “What will you do to my son?”.
Across the table Will saw Nancy and Johnathon exchange a pitiful look. They definitely knew.
“Micheal, you are not five. You are perfectly capable of sleeping in a bed without falling out of it” Ted said, not even bothering to look at Mike.
“Well excuse me but my bed was a little cramped last night?”
Ted’s head snapped up at Mike’s retort.
“Micheal, your mother and I have told you for there to be no girls-”
“It was Will. I didn’t have any spare mattresses because Holly’s friends took them.” Karen said, correcting him. All three heads snapped to Mike and Will. Will didn’t know if Karen was trying to make it better or worse. Because if Ted Wheeler was mad at his son for a girl sleeping in his bed it would be much worse if he found out it was Will.
“That is inappropriate Karen. You should know that two boys should not be sharing the same bed. You know what they say on the TV. Should’ve made one of them sleep on the floor or the couch.”
Will looked down, his cheeks burning. What if it was Lucas sharing a bed with Mike or Dustin? Ted Wheeler would never be making this much of a stir. No. It was because it was Mike and Will.
The silence hung heavy in the air as everyone ate in an awkward silence. After breakfast Will helped Mrs Wheeler clean up.
“Will, don’t listen to Ted okay?” she says gently. God did everyone in this house know he’s gay?
“Yeah alright”
Later Will sits in the living room reading a comic from Mike’s room when Johnathan and Nancy sit next to him on the couch.
“Will, What happened last night?” Jonathan pries
“We know it wasn’t Mike we heard crying and Mike talking” Nancy adds
“He visited me”
“He as in…Henry?” Nancy probes
“Vecna yeah, he said all those things like last time” Will said, glancing at Johnathon who had realization dawning on his face. Johnathan reaches out and rubs Will’s back, comfortingly. Despite never telling Johnathon the truth about himself Will felt Johnathon always knew. He saw it when the older boy looked at him and Mike in the rear-view mirror, saw it when Johnathon had that furious look in his eyes when Lonnie called Will those hurtful words. Due to this when Vecna started speaking to Will he told Johnathon immediately. All the hurtful words. All the threats. And Johnathon never judged.
“They’re not true Will” Johnathon mumbles.
Suddenly the sound of footsteps came closer, causing the trio's heads to snap up. Mike’s gangly frame appeared in the archway and Nancy rose to her feet. She roughly grabbed his arm and yanked him to softly murmur to him.
The rest of the day was filled with a blur. Once again after Nancy had that talk to Mike he retreated back into his room. The rest of the day was a blur. Will couldn't admit it but he felt lonely. Missed his mom, missed Jane. Unfortunately he couldn't even go to them as he didn’t know where they were.
Later that night, Will sat on the couch of the Wheeler’s basement absentmindedly flicking through TV channels. Footsteps echo down the carpeted stairway.
“Johnathon, I’m fine, leave me alone” Will calls out.
“Not Johnathon” that familiar voice responds. Mike.
“What are you doing down here its late”
“Could ask the same for you. Why are you still up?”
Will didn’t want to tell Mike that he didn’t want to sleep because he felt scared. He wasn’t five.
“Not tired”
“Will” Mike sighs. “If you’re gonna stay up because you don’t want to sleep, at least let me stay with you.”
“Mike seriously I’m fine”
“No you’re not. I can see it. You’ve been restless all day”
Will sighed his shoulders slumping forward in defeat.
“Fine.”
Mike gave him a shit eating grin and bounded over sitting right next to Will. Practically right on top of him. Will squirmed.
“What are you watching?” Mike probed
“Uh nothing…Not alot on at 11pm”
“Then lets watch a movie” Mike smiles, getting up from beside Will. He crouches in front of the tv stand rummaging through the VHS tapes in the cabinet. Will sees Mike’s arm reach dangerously deep into the cabinet.
“Fuck” Mike groans
“What’s wrong”
“My arms stuck”
“How the hell did you get your arm stuck in the TV cabinet?”
“The tape I wanna play is at the back and it dropped down the back and I caught it before it fell” Will watches as Mike responds. Mike tries to twist his arm out of the cabinet, his shoulder twisting weirdly.
“A little help?”
Will nods hastily, standing and dusting off his jeans. Will kneels beside Mike, his arm sticking into the cabinet alongside his.
“Shit you really are stuck huh?” Will teases and Mike rolls his eyes playfully. “Alright what do you want me to do?”
“Grab the side of the tape and help me tug it out” Mike says desperation lacing his voice. Will’s hand curls around Mike’s, getting a good grip on the sweaty tape. The boys tug their arms. Suddenly their arms slip past the stuck position flinging their bodies backwards slightly making them collide.
The two shared a glance. A small smile tugging at their lips, pink blooming on their cheeks.
“Better be a good movie” Will says rubbing a hand through his hair. He flips the tape over revealing the name.
‘The Goonies’.
“You’ve gotta be shitting me Mike. You made me do all that to watch the freaking Goonies?”
Mike smirks at him, nudging his shoulder.
“I know you like it. Don’t lie to me, William Byer’s.”
Will suppresses a grin.
After putting the tape in, both boys settled on the couch. Will with his knees pulled into his chest and Mike with his legs spread wide, an arm slung over the back of the couch where Will sat.
After a while of listening to the screaming children on the VHS. Will’s eyes fell heavy and was soon dragged off unwillingly to sleep. His head lolled. Right into Mike's shoulder.

if u wanna check out my ao3 to read this fic:

this chapter is a little over 2k words and is titled Boy Afraid (after the smiths song)
----
Mornings in the crowded Wheeler house are chaotic to say the least. Will sets the colorful childhood placemats on the table while his mom places knives and forks.
Once everyone was seated and eating, the Wheeler table became a free for all. Hands were quickly trying to snatch plates, conversations overlapped and people called out for plates of food on the table.
“Mom! Holly took all the toast!” Mike exclaims
“Johnathon can you pass the butter?” asks Nancy
“Mike! That’s too much maple syrup!” Mrs Wheeler scolds.
As Will quietly eats his food his eyes involuntarily drift over to Mike. The sunlight for the window illuminates his raven hair making him look down right angelic. Will really hopes his mom finds a place to stay soon.
Mike finishes quickly, his eyes quickly locking with Will’s before he quickly runs up to his room. Will noticed ever since they returned to Hawkins Mike spends a lot of his time locked in his room and often came downstairs looking miserable. Karen had explained that Mike was going through his “moody phase” and that it was insufferable.
Well she’s right Mike Wheeler is indefinitely insufferable.
And there it was the tell-tale slam of the door. Mike Wheeler had retreated into his cave once again.
“Hey Will! Do you want to help me with my drawing?” Holly Wheeler said, bounding up to him, holding out a blank sketchbook and pencils. Will’s lips curved into a smile, nodding his head as he sat down on his knees at the Wheeler’s stained coffee table. Whilst staying at the Wheeler’s Will had become unexpectedly fond of the youngest sibling of the three. In a way, Holly reminded Will of the smaller, big eyed boy he had once been, she was talented at drawing like him and had the same innocent, hopeful smile. However the similarities ended there. Because unlike Will, she was brave.
Will peers over her shoulder, seeing how her hand delicately flicks to create swirls and lines.
“Add a little more shading there so her eyes look more real,” he suggested, pointing to the girl's iris that Holly was sketching. She eagerly nodded, sending a flood of affection through Will’s veins. The two sat bathed in the serene morning sunlight which streamed through the Wheeler’s windows, as the soft sound of pencil on paper and Will’s soft voice filled the living room. The two were so entranced by Holly’s drawing that Will practically jumped out of his skin when he saw Karen Wheeler standing in front of him.
“Hey you two, what are you working on?” she asks peering down at the paper
“A drawing! Will’s helping me!” Holly says excitedly holding up the paper for her mother to take.
Mrs Wheeler examined the drawing a small smile tugging at her lips
“That’s very good Holly! Thanks for helping her out, Will.” She beams
“Are you going to ask him mom?” Holly says expectantly causing Will’s eyebrow to quirk up questioningly.
“Oh yes! Will, is it okay if Holly takes the basement tonight? She’s having a sleepover and not everyone can fit in her bedroom. Can you maybe stay in Mike’s room tonight?” As Karen says the dreaded name, Will spots a gangly, raven haired boy on the stairwell. Mike perks up at his name and strolls into the living room, his eyebrows raising at Will and Holly sitting on the floor together.
“Oh Mike there you are! Finally decided to leave that room of yours and join us?” Karen teases. “Is it okay if Will stays in your room tonight? Holly’s sleepover is overtaking the basement" she questions.
Mike’s eyebrows raise and his cheeks earn a slight pink stain to them. God is Mike disgusted with him? Is he mad that his mom is making him share a room with Will? Does he feel uncomfortable? What if Mike gets mad at him? Leaves Will in his room because he’d rather sleep on the wooden floor of the living room then share with Will? God, what if? What if? What if? What if?
“Oh uh sure whatever.” Mike says in a tone Will can’t exactly pin point. Mike’s chocolate eyes dart around the room anxiously avoiding eye contact with his mom almost like he's guilty…or hiding something. Then his eye’s lock with Will. To Will, it's like two magnets snapping together, his eyes difficult to pry away from Mike’s brown ones. Suddenly, the magnetism is broken as Mike’s eyes tear away from his looking down, with that strange emotion crossing his face again.
The entire day Will sits anxiously, dreading the idea of him entering the lair of Mike Wheeler. He tries to busy himself by drawing, reading comics and playing on his gameboy, but to no avail the dread loomed. The sky had quickly gone from bright blue, to a dusky pink and now to a deep blue. It was night time. His belongings from the basement had been hauled to the top stair next to the door. That door. The one with the chipped oak wood and the rusting brass door knob. The door that Micheal Wheeler was behind doing who knows what all day.
Will sat downstairs on the Wheeler’s couch, (which had definitely seen better days) trying to drown out the hyperactive chatter of 10 year olds who Will could assume were loaded up on sugar.
The door stared at him in the face. He just had to brave it. How bad could it be? Climbing the stairs with his weary limbs he entered the adjacent bathroom, changing and brushing his teeth. Before leaving, he precariously fixed his hair, before sighing.Despite knowing that Mike was a lost cause, he still wanted to look good; a little part of him clinging to non-existent hope. How pathetic. Soon he was face to face with the door, his knock seeming deafening to his ears.
“Go away mom!” Mike yelled
“It’s not your mom Mike. It’s me.” Will says, his face basically pressed up to the door frame hoping his voice would carry into the room.
Suddenly he heard feet hit the ground loudly and shuffling. What the hell was Mike doing? Before Will had any time to question the door opened, bringing him face to face with Mike.
“Sorry, Will. I didn’t mean to yell at you. Truly. I thought you were my mom” Mike says embarrassment seeping into every syllable. He moves to the side allowing Will to enter the lion's den.
Mike’s room had changed. Well duh, what else was Will expecting? But his room was such a far cry from Mike's childhood room. Gone was the single bed with its dorky space bedsheets which Mike and Will had spent time reading comics, gone was the lava lamp Mrs Wheeler brought Mike for his 8th birthday, gone was the voltron poster which hung above Mike’s bed. Now a double bed with navy sheets laid in the centre of the room, with star wars posters and a street sign hung on the walls. Mike had changed.
“It’s fine Mike really” Will said half laughing as he spotted a picture of the party at the science fair framed on the Wall. Turning to face Mike, Will thought he had died and gone to heaven. To Will, Mike always was beautiful; but not in the conventional way. As a child Will found beauty in Mike’s awkwardness. In his gangly limbs and how he moved like a gust of wind could knock him over. Now Mike was far from the awkward boy Will once knew; now standing in a silent confidence in his levis and woolen sweater which was cuffed at the sleeves. Holy shit. Was Mike Wheeler…attractive?
“Okay, that's good then. But uh slight issue. You know the spare mattress?” Mike says leaning against the end of his bed post.
“You mean the one I’m sleeping on?”
“No the other one…the one we split coke on that one time.” Mike says.
“Oh yeah that one. What about it?”
“So basically Holly took both of them, so uh, unless you wanna sleep on my floor which I doubt is comfy you’re gonna have to share my bed.” Mike says his face cringing slightly.
Oh.
My.
God.
What was he gonna do?! Sharing a bed with Micheal Wheeler? THE Micheal Wheeler he’s been in love since he was thirteen? THE Micheal Wheeler he has dreamt about so many times? Will felt his heart falter. He has literally dreamed of this moment. Literally. But he didn’t feel particularly overjoyed. Whilst elation and adrenaline pumped through his body Will could only feel sick. Was this a cruel twist of fate? Maybe God was real. Maybe those people on TV were right and he did hate people like Will, and this was Will’s divine retribution.
“Oh uh yeah that's cool” he muttered staring down at himself self consciously as his thumbs twiddled.
Both boys sat on the bed, under the covers, the air hanging heavy with…something. Will didn’t know exactly what it was but it was definitely there. And potent.
“Will?” Mike murmured. Will couldn’t help but melt at his tone. After all these years Mike’s soft tone was still there for Will. Will thought it sounded even better with Mike’s deeper voice.
“Yeah?” Will chokes out
“You know how that whole thing happened…In the van?”
“When we did that trip to find El?” Will questions.
“Yeah”
“What about it?” Will queried. What could Mike possibly be asking? Will thought. Unless…Oh god no. Please no no no. He could not be asking Will about that.
“The painting” oh god there it is. “You painted it for me didn't you?” Mike says softly looking into Will’s eyes.
Will felt himself internally shrivel up.
“Uhm.How’d you know?”
“El told me.”
“El? You asked her?” Will pried.
“Yeah well, she was getting fed up with my bullshit; and I thought it was strange she was so mad at me when you said all those things about her and the painting. So I asked.”
“Oh. What’d she say?”
“She didn’t know.”
“Right” Will says quietly looking down embarrassed. The two boys sat awkwardly in silence. God Will had messed up bad hasn’t he?
“I wish..I wish you told me it was from you. It would’ve meant more. I mean, you're my cleric Will! I’m your paladin! We’re best friends…I want you to tell me things. I want you to feel comfortable enough so you don’t have to lie to me.” Mike rambled. Warmth bloomed in Will’s chest. Will’s Mike’s cleric. His. Mike had said it himself. Will felt his cheeks warm up.
“I hate what happened to us, Will. I just…I feel like we drifted apart so much after California and I guess that’s why I’ve been so funny around you.”
“I’m sorry” Will mumbles, his voice threatening to break.
“What! No! No, no no, Will; it’s my fault. I’ve been such a dick since we got back I should be the one apologising. Even before then I was being a dick.” Mike exclaims earnestly.
“Yeah, you kinda were,” Will retorts, laughing slightly earning a chuckle from Mike. Their eyes locked again by that magnetic force. Their knees knock together. No one pulls away. ‘What the hell am I doing?’ screamed Will’s brain. ‘He’s going to figure it out!’ Will’s eyes quickly snap away, feigning interest in Mike’s bed sheets.
“How’d El react?” Will asked
“Oh god” Mike sighed, laughing a little as his arm slung over his eyes. “She was going to ask you about it. She was confused. But considering she broke up with me a month later, I'd say pretty well.” Mike continues his eyes playfully peeking out from under his arm looking at Will sideways.
“You guys broke up?! She never told me!”
“Again, I’ve been kinda a dick to everyone.” Mike says laughing self deprecatingly.
Will stifles a yawn, suddenly aware of how heavy his eyes were.
“Shit it’s almost midnight. Sorry didn't mean to keep you up” Mike apologises.
“It’s okay. Worth it”
“I’m glad” Mike beams.
Both boys lay down, settling themselves into Mike’s bed which suddenly seems too small. Knees knock, elbows touch, yet neither make an effort to pull away.
Will’s eyes grow heavy as he succumbs to a sleep next to Micheal. Goddamn. Wheeler.

Will Byers is five years old when he first met Mike. He remembers it clear as day. How that morning he clung to his mother crying, begging her to let him come with her; how the other children formed circles, giggling and laughing and how for Will it just didn’t..click. From day one he was different. An outsider. An outcast. Unwanted.
Tears had stung at his eyes as the crisp air embraced him. Despite the cool day the sun still shone, warming him from the inside out. He had toddled over to the squeaky swing set, aimlessly swinging while the mantra of “I want to go home” repeated on loop. But then. Then a boy sat next to him. The face he’ll remember for the rest of his life. He was a skinny boy, with ivory skin and midnight hair. But Will didn’t specifically remember that. No. He remembered the kind, brown eyes that belonged to Micheal Wheeler.
“Do you want to be my friend?” he had asked. And from that day on he and Mike Wheeler were best friends.
The rest of the day Mike and Will were stuck together like superglue only to be pried apart by the hands of their mothers.
Will Byers is six years old when Mike first came over to his house. In the year they have been friends Mike has not once come over to Will’s house. In truth, Will was ashamed, well as ashamed as a six - year old could be; but still yet ashamed. Will had been to Mike’s house before and his eyes were opened up to what his life could be instead of what it was.
Mike lived in a nice, spacious house, like the ones you saw in movies. It was filled with liveliness and was so, so, so very different from Will’s house. Even Mike’s family reflected this. His mother was so kind to both Will and her children, often letting them play in the basement, and his sister was so quiet yet offered a small smile to the pair every once in a while. Will thought she would get along with Johnathon if they met. What Will reveled in the most about the Wheeler’s house was the silence. Well, the house wasn’t completely silent; there was laughter, and the distant hum of the tv, but it was silent to Will because there was no yelling. At Mike's house Mr and Mrs Wheeler didn’t scream or yell. At Mike's house there were no bottles on the kitchen counter. At Mike’s house there were no angry holes in the wall. At Mike’s house no one lied that the bruises which bloomed on their skin was from ‘falling down the stairs’.
And if Mike saw this..Saw through Will’s lies…Well Mike may not want to be friends with Will anymore. Yet Mike did not comment on anything. They sat and drew and played board games with Joyce carefully monitoring him. Mike did not question the holes in the walls. Mike did not question the “magic elixirs” sitting so brazenly in the kitchen. Mike didn’t even falter when Lonnie barged through the door giving them both a disgusted look. Mike just accepted it. Will loved that about Mike.
Will Byers is thirteen when he realises he loves Mike Wheeler. It hits him like a train. For the past few years Will has endured hellish torment. Being taken to the Upside Down, used as a spy. Will has never been sure of himself since then. Consumed by the worry that he is controlling him, that Will is not himself but rather a pawn in a game he didn’t understand the rules to. But he knows one thing about himself. He loves Micheal Wheeler. But he also knows it is wrong.
This revelation sprang up on him as a surprise. But it made sense. How could Will not love Mike? Mike who was looking for Will desperately when he was kidnapped, Mike who held Will’s hand through the fear, Mike who stuck to Will’s side throughout it all. Mike who would go crazy with Will. Together.
The thought had occurred to Will as he sat in Johnathon’s room, as the older boy talked dreamily of Nancy.
“She’s just…so..She does all these things for me…It makes me feel special…Wanted…God Will she’s perfect.” Jonathan had confessed exasperated.
Mike made Will feel special. Mike made Will feel wanted. To Will, Mike was perfect. He felt giddy at every smile, at every touch. Will likes Mike.
The thought had made Will run out of the room to throw up. He felt disgusted. Not with Mike but himself. For the past few years Will was determined to prove everyone wrong. To throw back the cutting words of this father, of his peers back in his face. There was nothing else he wanted then to become successful and settle down with a nice girl and to have a kid or two. Yet those leering words were right, and it felt like to Will at the time he had betrayed his future self, his chance at happiness for some selfish need. To banish himself to a world of pain and suffering, just because Mike Wheeler gave him butterflies.
Then the daydreams started. Fleeting fantasises which slipped in involuntarily to his mind as he drifted in and out of consciousness. He imagined Mike was there laying with him, arms wrapped around his middle, pressing adoring kisses into his nape. Will allowed himself to revel in these fantasies under the cloak of darkness. To savour this version of Mike. The version of Mike who was different like Will. Yet upon waking up Will felt shame seep into his bones. Unlike in his mind Mike was not different, and definitely not laying in bed with him. The bed was cold.
That summer Will realised how stupid Micheal Wheeler is. Mike had changed. He was growing up. Will couldn’t tell if it was Mike or his growing testosterone now speaking. Mike had become an asshole.
Will in the meanwhile wanted to relive what he had lost. In all honesty he wanted to push down how he was growing up. Wanted to hide his cracking voice, hide the spiky hair on his legs. Suddenly Will was awoken with the cruel onset of puberty, despite the absence of a childhood.
It was one thing for Mike to not want to play D&D anymore. It was another for Mike to abandon Will. Will thought he was being unreasonable. That his feelings were making him feel this way. But deep down it was more than this. Mike was leaving Will stuck in childhood, and Will hated being alone.
And then Will’s fears were confirmed with one simple sentence.
“It’s not my fault you don’t like girls!”
That one sentence broke Will. Till this day the cruel sentence lingered in his mind. He knew that people had suspected things. Knew that he was so obviously out of place. What he did not know was that Mike knew. And if Mike knew, did his friends know?
Mike had apologized profusely. Will had accepted.
And you know what the worst part is? Despite how Mike’s words had burned a hole in Will’s heart, Will’s heart still beat for Mike.
At the end of the summer Will is ashamed to admit he is happy to leave Hawkins. Leave his life behind. Maybe he’ll finally feel free.
Will Byers is fifteen years old when the letters arrive. Yet they are not for him but for El. Now he lives in California.
Over the past few months of living in California, Will has grown into himself. Both physically and mentally. His voice has deepened, his face once soft baby fat now angular, he now towers over his mother despite him still being her baby; his body no longer curls into itself like a turtle retreating from a threat. Will is now everything he had feared he would be. Grown. Mature.
Before leaving Hawkins Will had thought he had endured the hardest curveballs life had thrown at him. He thought being kidnapped and possessed were the most taxing things he would ever have to experience. He was so pathetically wrong. The hardest thing Will Byers ever had to do was accept himself. He was able to push down who he was over all these years, distracted by fighting interdimensional monsters and struggling to survive, but now the incessant hum of Hawkins was silent; and in the silence was Will. In the silence thoughts had slipped into his mind, he mulled over how ‘wrong’ he was, yet overtime Will realised there was nothing wrong about him. His so-called “wrongness” was in fact right for him. Without that puzzle piece Will Byers wouldn’t be Will Byers.
Over time the initial sadness of moving had withered away. Of course he still missed his friends, missed Mike but now he was doing things he never imagined. At night, Jane (which he only called her by; calling her El to him now is just wrong) would slip into his room and the pair would chat, gossip and read teen magazines (which Jane insisted on after Max gave her a whole bundle). At school he talked to people. No longer was he a zombie boy, he was just Will. Will for the past couple months had ridden out the high of California, until the letters arrived.
Will remembers how one night Jane had come into his room once again, holding three letters. Together they read them.
“Dear El,
I’m sorry if this letter finds you late, just wanted to make sure I had the right address. I hope you are doing well in California. Does school go back for you tomorrow? It does for me. Anyways I hope you are doing well. Say hi to the others for me.
From Mike”
“Dear El,
How is highschool? Sorry I have not written. I have been busy. I would love to hear about how high school in California works. Do you have friends? What's your favorite subject? Hope you are doing well.
From Mike”
“Dear El,
Thanks for writing back to me. I hope all of you are well. Nancy asked me to ask you if you could tell Johnathon if he could call. Or write. Either works.
From Mike”
Mike Wheeler. His best friend has left Will behind once again. Now every week Jane receives a letter and joyfully she rushes to her room and reads them. Every week Will expects something. A call. A letter. Even a fucking postcard would suffice. Not one word. Nothing.
Will had been enraged. Every couple of weeks, even every couple of days, he received a call from Dustin and Lucas, yet radio silence from Mike. Will doesn't care. Why should he care? He knows this about Mike. That Mike likes Jane more than him (which of course he’s allowed to, Jane is his girlfriend after all), that Mike can be such a prick. Even in the letters to Jane that he read Mike is a prick. The letters are short, impersonal, not even signed “Love Mike”. But Will doesn't need Mike (or so he thinks). He has another Mike. The one who lives in his head.
The fantasies had continued evolving into dreams. In his dreams Mike’s face beams down at him with adoration, his touch reverent on Will’s skin. Mike’s kisses are like a healing balm on his skin soothing Will’s frayed nerves. Will longs to exist purely in sleep so he could get his Mike all the time, every day. Yet cruelly his eyes must open to see an empty bed, devoid of the existence of the lover who had laid there in Will’s dream.
Now Will is sixteen. He lays on the soft mattress on the floor of the Wheeler’s basement. Since the Byers’ return to Hawkins they had been living in the Wheeler’s house. In the past couple of weeks Will has felt he has gone backwards. Unfortunately seeing Mike Wheeler completely undid Will Byers as those familiar giddy feelings rushed through his veins. And now he is sharing a house with him. He is in complete agony.
