First things first. Know the context. 

There is an economic crisis going on in Sri Lanka. We have declared bankruptcy. 

I’ve already made a post about what this means for the country. This means high inflation. No electricity. Prices are sky rocketing. 

No fuel. I repeat. No fuel. People are fucking dying in queues. 

But even without fuel, people came to Colombo. People fucking walked to Colombo for miles and miles to join the protest. 

There were attempts to stop the protest. We have the right for assembly. We have the right to freedom of expression. But no. The government stopped fuel dispense (as if we had fuel lol) to stop people. They imposed an unconstitutional “police curfew” to stop the protest. Why is no one talking about this shit??

But people still came. I don’t see the international media reporting about the effort and energy and passion that went into this. 

We built a city. Do you fucking know that? We built a city called “GotaGoGama” (loosely translates to: Gota-Go-Home-Ville). We built a city months ago since the country collapsed. 

Recap of May 09th when GotaGoGama was attacked by Mahinda Rajapaksha (then PM) and his goons. 

I repeat. The protest on 09th July is not the first. 

We’ve been asked the president to step down so more competent people can take over and do something to help us. This protest yesterday was not new. It’s not random. It’s an act of people giving up. The storming of the presidential palace is not anger. It’s taking back of power. 

As for the swimming pools? And People making fun of the protestors for working out in the president’s gym, eating the food in his kitchen and swimming in his pool? 

What about this? 

For people making fun of the youth who are taking a dip at the swimming pool or playing the piano at the president’s house…For those are the condemning the ‘protestors’ who set the PM’s house on fire (we still have no visual proof this happened) - all I have to say is this:

These leaders we asked to step down today (who still haven’t btw. No. Not yet. Nothing official yet), they are corrupt beyond compare. The president had “said” he “will” step down not he 13th. But we don’t know anything yet. 

These are people who not only brought the country to economic collapse. But the Rajapaskhas are responsible for millions of lives that were lost during the civil war. These are people who have taken from my country until there is nothing more for us to give. 

I’m really grateful that you are all finally “talking about us”. I’m glad the international media and the whole world is finally watching. But your view is narrow. It is is short sighted. 

International media. People of the world. 

Do better. 

Do fucking better. 

Because we, Sri Lankans, are doing our fucking best right now. 

If you fucking dare equate protestors who took over the Presidential Secretariat simply by finally outnumbering the cops, without any property damage let alone injury, after weeks and months of being absolutely brutalized by army and police for protesting completely peacefully, I hope you fall into a sewer and have to swim upstream with your mouths open.

The only violence has come from cops and military. They shot two people today, and injured 40 more. One died. Two journalists have just been assaulted on live TV, one of them a 23 year old kid who is in a bad way. There has been no property damage, or assaults on anyone.

Even before, the protests were kept 100% peaceful even when we were attacked repeatedly with tear gas, water canons, rubber bullets and even live rounds, beaten and bashed on the head with batons and dragged off and arrested. Right up until the PM literally sent bus loads of goons into the heart of the country's protest camp and destroyed it. Only then did people finally lose it and burn down all the government MPs homes and offices.

Even then innocents were not harmed and the houses were completely sacked and evacuated first. Not saying it were good or right, but it's was a shatteringly human response to over 18 months of starving, tormenting and bankrupting us, and kidnapping and terrorising anyone who protested. Far, far longer for marginalized communities. But the international media and US social media just grabbed the footage of the riots and fires and made us out to be rabid, violent beasts who had been storming buildings and terrorizing politicians and state forces.

This is the callous, racist, unthinking violence you whites and Westerners do to us. Especially USAmericans. You don't understand how much damage a stray reblog or retweet can do just by virtue of you being USAmerican and sitting on the world's largest information hegemony. Our government steals our rights and lives and you strip us of our dignity and agency and the right to tell our own stories.

We are not you. We are our own people. Let us tell our own stories in our own voices, and stop inferring and assuming shit without knowing jackshit about what's going on on the ground.

(Payback for cops having tear gassed protestors and assaulted journalists for hours, and critically injured several people just for protesting peacefully outside. Which we wouldn't have to do if he resigned, instead of lying and saying "he will". Fuck around and find out bitch.)

This is the only property damage that has happened so far. The protestors who occupied the President's Mansion (a public building) had fun in the pool and made full use of the kitchens stocked with cooking gas and foods that people have been starving without.

As someone who fucking lives in the US Jun 6th was fucking horrifying and virtually unprovoked. I was afraid to fucking go outside while it was happening, but I remember being in public by force and seeing people still covered in trump gear while he was urging them into this fucking senseless violence and just thinking I, and my marginalized siblings are in danger. Because all I could think about was those of us who knew he was evil(For lack of a better word right now) and was going to give power to unspeakable things. Thinking of my friends who attempted suicide because they were terrified to their core of living in a country run by this man, and so scared of fucking goons and how this would embolden them.

As someone who knows what's going on in Sri Lanka and actually gives a shit, and again isn't a fascist or being racist about this. Sri Lanka is in a STATE OF EMERGENCY because their leadership is fucked up and has been fucked up. Don't you dare slander these people for being tired of being slowly suffocated by their own goddamn government and police.

If you do not care to fucking understand that Jan 6 was terrorism encouraged by the fucking bastard former president and Sri Lankans peaceful protesters have been BEATEN and SHOT with rubber bullets and TEAR GASSED and only NOW resorted to violence because they had NOTHING left. They are protesting because have nothing left, nothing, and Their leadership is completely at fault.

The Sri Lankan people have done nothing but suffer at the hands of their government and this was their last fucking resort. To compare this to a fucking pissbaby facists and neo-nazis who's idol didn't get reelected reacting with pure unfiltered violence is absolutely disgusting.
