Minimal Maps, Big Data: Michael Pecirno Makes Data Visualization Both Beautiful and Illuminating
Michael Pecirno is a multi-disciplinary designer based out of London, England. Originally trained as an architect and later working as an art director, his practice focuses on storytelling through visual and built experiences. Minimal Maps is an ongoing project by Pecirno that explores how richly-detailed single subject maps can give us new imagery to understand our landscape. For example, corn fields take up 91 million acres of the American landscape, a staggering 4.83% of the contiguous United States. Though the value sounds astounding, visualizing what 4.83% of the American landscape looks like, or furthermore, where this land is, is extraordinarily difficult. These maps, which use tremendous amounts of raw data provided by the USDA, attempt to accurately and explicitly convey this information. Pecirno’s maps and research, the latest of which will be shown at the Chicago Architecture Biennial this fall, provide an alternative to the often information-poor data visualization maps that have become ubiquitous today.

Tactical Archipelagos: LCLA Office Looks at Architecture at the Environmental Scale
Cambridge and Medellín-based LCLA Office, positioned at the intersections of the fields of landscape, architecture, and urbanism, explores “new forms of public realms through environmental and territorial operations.” For the Tactical Archipelago project in Kiev, Ukraine, LCLA reconsiders 37 islands in the city’s Dnieper River as places for recreation, ecological infrastructure, transportation, and, through a series of micro-clusters inserted on the river’s surface, itinerant zones of activity and services. The Kiev Islands represent the unique opportunity to allow those in an urban center to balance urban life with the offerings of these natural places. These clusters can be inserted through time and at specific zones, as they are intended to recover forgotten and unfulfilled citizens’ desires such as taking a bath in the river, walking in the forest, or enjoying clean water. LCLA Office is taking part in the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial this October along with over 100 other architects, artists, and designers.

Mapped Domesticity | Vere van Gool Location: Salton Territory, California, USA - AA School of Architecture Projects Review 2012 - Inter 1
- In the desert, all you need is gas, cash and a place to crash… This commentary-project is the rework of the 1950’ies design of the American Farm through a critical reading of the landscape and how land exploitation operates according to the speculated decay of the Salton Territory, proposing the American Farm as a condensed symbol of the late 2020’ies over-accelerated sense of mobility, contra intuitive consumerism and manic domestic consequences of (utopian) American Life.

In the post-Sandy moment, the problem of disaster—”natural” or manmade— is incredibly palpable. Land Swap tackles this dilemma by foregrounding rising sea levels in an urban area, the Rockaways. To this end, we propose infrastructural systems as the key element in the larger alchemy of remedying ecological and economic ills. Land Swap critically analyzes the peninsula’s vulnerability, highlighting the relationship to existing topography, in order to provocatively retrofit the Rockaway. The western edge becomes a new dynamic structure that supplants residential space with ecological infrastructure systems, diversifying the recreational purposes by providing a more resilient and performative typology. On the other hand, in the Far Rockaway edge, the western side’s dominance of ecology is contrasted with high vertical density housing in the high elevation areas, where the main project is reutilizing a defunct landfill. This new space gives the Rockaway residents from Breezy Point, Roxbury, Belle Harbor, and Nenposit new housing options; restructuring the typology of housing, becoming self-sustainable, creating new spatial structure and most importantly, creating communities that intertwine with each other. Land Swap develops strategies for existing and new inventions, developing prototypical designs that capture the potential of a livable and vibrant Rockaway.

An anti-surveillance movement focused on the overly surveyed region of Midtown, Manhattan. Facial recognition becomes impaired through high-contrast surface treatments along the street. These contrastive and perspectival landscapes alter a program's ability to recognize consistent movement of the human figure.
