Iāve started a new project called #totallyawesomeanimals where I will be posting a new interesting animal illustration on my Instagram every week!Ā
To kick things off I made a video about what inspired the project (hint: a giant 80 year old tortoise.)
The Galapagos Tortoise is the largest tortoise in the world, weighing up to 800 lbs! They have no predators, so they live up to 150+ years! With a relatively small habitat of the volcanic Galapagos archipelago, these awesome creatures were part of Darwinās inspiration when developing evolutionary theory.Ā

Catching up with JP Coovert
Occasionally I will use this space to talk about CCS alumni and the paths theyāve traveled in the years since graduation. JP Coovert was one of the first students I met when I came to CCS in 2007. He was a senior at the time, so I had him in the first Thesis Seminar class I taught, and he also signed on to be my T.A. for Cartooning Studio, so he had front row seats to my trial-by-fire as a graduate-level instructor. JP was cheerful, enthusiastic, supportive, and always ready to pitch in however he could. His presence and positivity really helped me survive that first teaching year.
After graduating CCS in 2008, JP moved to Minneapolis to be with his wife, Jacie. After six months or so of odd jobs, he was hired full-time to design graphics for Targetās line of t-shirts for kids.Ā

He also took on a number of book illustration jobs, most notably for the Charlie Joe Jackson series from Roaring Brook Press.
During all of this, like most cartoonists who take on day jobs in order to make ends meet, JP continued to write and draw comics on nights and weekends, using several conventions a year as deadlines to put out new books. Ten years agoāaround the same time that CCS first opened its doorsāhe started self-publishingĀ Simple Routines, an autobiographical comics series, the 20th issue of which came out earlier this year through One Percent Press.
After seven years at Target, JP recently left to be a full time free-lancer. A scary step for any working artist, but one he can make with confidence, given the skills and portfolio built up over many years of disciplined work. Congratulations for making the leap, JP, and best of luck in your future endeavors!Ā
