The problem comes from the fact that a lot of traditional SFF tropesβthe invading orc hordes, the uninhabited exoplanet to settle, the adventurous archaeologist, the ancient aliens, the Lost World, the scary untamed wildernessβare rooted in colonialist adventure stories and attitudes from the 1800s and 1900s, and if you donβt really know what youβre doing with them itβs way too easy to accidentally just replicate their underlying colonialist and orientalist basis. Stargate is a famous example of this, but itβs missing the other half of the equation here: the desire to write something cozy, queer, uplifting, nice, and hopepunk.
When these two things crash together it can create some deeply unintended implications.
The problem with indie work in this space is that it has a tendency to be pretty conflict-averse, and it accomplishes this by presenting a protagonist or protag group who areΒ niceΒ as their primary defining characteristic. Theyβre nice, theyβre good, they have correct and progressive beliefs, and narratively everything they do is framed as nice, good, and correct.
I wanted to contextualize what Iβm talking about before I name specific works, to make it clear why I see this as a recurring issue. Links below go to more in-depth discussion of each example.
The exoplanet colonization audio dramaΒ This Planet Needs a NameΒ is probably the purest distillation of this (from the title itself you can guess which direction this goes in). The short storyΒ βDracanmΕt Council of Human Study Report, Compiled by Usander GreystartβΒ published in the queer SFF anthology Common Bonds was clearly TRYING to have a theme of βcolonialism is badβ but what was actually presented was a replication of a shocking number of racist tropes about Native Americans, applied to marauding orcs.
Tradpub isnβt immune either, though. Becky Chambersβs novellaΒ A Prayer for the Crown-ShyΒ contains no depictions of colonialism directly but draws unthinkingly from some deeply colonialist attitudes aboutΒ nature,Β humans,Β wilderness, andΒ religion, thereby presenting some bizarre and occasionally disturbing scenes that are supposed to be moving and gentle and sweet. I havenβt personally readΒ The House in the Cerulean SeaΒ by T. J. Klune but I have heard the controversy about its origins; admitting that your cozy fantasy book where inhuman/monster children are taken away from their families and raised in a state-run foster home by a state agent who Understands them and Cares about them better than anyone else was inspired by the Canadian policy of taking Indigenous children away from their families to place them with white families who would raise them βbetterβ sure is indicative of some underlying assumptions about how the world works.
My favorite example, though, is Season 1 of the audio dramaΒ Travelling Light, which had a theme of βartifact smuggling is a victimless crime and really itβs about the friends we made along the way.β The writing team brushed me off when I raised concerns about this, basically telling me βyou are the only person who cares about thisβ (which was evidently true tbh) and then blocked me on tumblr, then apparently sat on this, considering it, writing a behind the scenes blog post explicitly using my term βcozy colonialismβ without actually citing me because I was still blocked on Tumblr, then doing a complete 180 in season 2 where the main character learns that artifact smuggling is not a victimless crime actually. Also, Iβm pretty sure they wrote me into the show as an antagonistic character who repeats all the points I made to the protagonist and the protagonist hates him for calling them out, but begrudgingly eventually agrees that heβs kind of right. SUCCESS. Also, the official tumblr unblocked me at about the same time, making me think that this is related.
apparently this is a very common side effect of the new medication i just started and for most people this doesnt subside until you step up to the full dose. and im on another medication that interferes with this one so it might be 4 months before im on the full dose. Oh my god. the recommended course of action seems to be some variation of hydroxyzine but its too late for me now. its 5 am and i have things to do tomorrow (today?) in the morning inabout 4 hours

one time i was making potato soup and i needed broth for it but i was out of broth. but in my dog food cabinet there was a carton of chicken broth that i had bought for my dog. now the box did say HUMAN GRADE and the ingredients were just bog standard chicken broth. it did say something about joint health for dogs on there. but the ingredients were normal. i even compared the ingredients list to some normal person broth and they were the same. so i did put dog broth in that soup and it did taste completely normal. but i did use the dog broth.
