<( A Cloudy Mask )
For this year's Art Fight, the challenge I set for myself is to mix 2D and 3D elements together in Blender. To do that, I modeled theatre masks based on the three teams, which will be used as bases throughout the month. I pick them based on my target's team, and then draw and/or model decorations onto it based on one of their characters!
This dreamy mask is for Kobolding on AF, based on one of their Brain Bunny characters! They have eight to choose from, but I was almost immediately drawn to Aries. Sure the colours matched the Tragedy mask shader I made to start and the design is always teary-eyed, but Aries takes much of life's pains and sorrows upon himself, which I thought was very inspirational and commendable. The artist likes art with "clouds, gore, sleepytime" with him, and while I did have the temptation with add a bit of gore in the mask, I got carried away with the clouds.
The cloud effect was made with the airbrush in a Grease Pencil layer! First I drew them on one axis so it was flat in the air, then I moved them into position before using the Sculpt Mode to swirl them around the mask and pedestal! There's a certain whimsy to pushing and fluffing up clouds like this, honestly, it made me pretty giddy to work on.
The ears were made the same way, but I did accidentally make them flat with a colour fill. I tried to work with it but sculpting a GP fill material is not the best experience, no matter how much I tried to work it out on later masks. So, I scrapped the first set and decided to make them out of clouds instead! The outlines were a really nice shaping touch.
Finally I focused on the mask itself, using the airbrush to dab on bubbly tears, adding another material to the mask to make Aries' fur pattern, and then drew on the outlines, the eyebrow marks and the Tragedy makeup. This is still one of my favourite masks to make honestly, this and Lemonade's mask are pretty high up there as some of the best I've made so far.

<( A Lemony Mask )

This lovely mask is for @junoeevee, based on their really cool OC Lemonade! I got the idea to use my favourite trick for this, and that is the holdout shader, inspired by a screen on Lemonade's chest that exposes its ribs and heart. To achieve this effect, I first modeled Lemonade's head, which I locked in hard on as that was the first half of the process. I've learned so much about 3D modeling and de-rusted my old skills since I started this endeavor, so a lot of this came to me naturally. Honestly quicker than I expected it to. Later on you'll continue to see pieces with more and more modeling work.
Now I don't know the specifics of how the holdout shader trick works, but what I did is expand the back of the mask to cover the head with some extra space, then applied the holdout shader to the extra faces, essentially projecting the environment around the mask onto it. It will seem like there's nothing there at all when you look at it from behind, until you turn to the front. I also learned how to make a glossy shader on the front to push the screen look. I've heard it looks like a reflection too which is funny to hear. I also decided to keep the actual painted decals on the mask minimal so it doesn't hide the head inside.

This one is for @mehowity, based on their cute sona Maizie! This one I spent plenty of time modeling again, though my lack of practice bit me in the butt. At first it was easy—I stretched the basis for cat ears out of the mask, then painted on top of it with the airbrush to make it look fluffy. But then I got the idea to model the goggles featured in Maizie's reference sheets. At first the modeling took very little time, just extruding from a basic rectangular cube, but I may have messed up the extrusions along the way because I was discovering weird edges that made the 3D lineart look odd. I tried to clean up the topology, but after accidentally deleting one too many faces, I just left it without lineart. Despite my struggles with it, I still think it's an adorable mask. Pink and teal is a really good colour combo! Stay tuned, I have plenty of masks coming up soon <3

The next mask, one of my favourites so far, belongs to @lemon-ghostea for their character Hunger! What makes it stand out so much in my mind was sculpting the tongues out of Grease Pencil strokes, essentially drawing in the air. Despite drawing so much in Blender, I didn't take full advantage of the 3D space, so this year's challenge also includes experimenting with that. The way I did the tongues is by drawing them flat in the air, before using Sculpt Mode to push and mould them into the right shape and position on the mask. It makes for really nice 3D effect without any modeling, which I think works well for smaller details like that. I also like the almost unintended effect of the modeled crown, which I did want to make it look like teeth. The shadow it casts on the mask makes it look more like shark teeth though, which fits for how much teeth features on it.
Stay tuned, I have plenty of masks coming up soon <3
<( A Sprungly Mask )
For this year's Art Fight, the challenge is to mix 2D and 3D elements together in Blender. To do that, I modeled theatre masks based on the three teams, which will be used as bases throughout the month. I pick them based on my target's team, and then draw and/or model decorations onto it based on one of their characters!
The very first mask goes to Craftmine_Pro on AF, for their character Sprungles! The character references had a scribbly black-and-white style which almost softens the more gruesome aspects of the immortal centipede-like creature made from corpses. Using Grease Pencil, I roughly sketched on the decorations for this mask, keeping it loose and a little messy. I even accidentally did some hatching in the goop leaking from the eyes because of some weird behaviour with my Fill Bucket brush (I still don't really know how to use it despite watching multiple videos, so I just use the Ink Pen with a Fill material). I also used a low Noise modifier to add the line boil effect, adding just a touch of life to the scribbliness. I then applied a simple Toon Shader on the mask, colour-picking the base and shadow colours straight from the teams artwork with some adjustments, and it was done!
I haven't properly modeled anything 3D since maybe 2022 when I was actively studying it, so I was surprised by how quickly it all came back to me. I did have to watch some tutorials to get started (thank you Crashsune and sorry_stacy, your videos helped a lot!). Once I got used to Blender over the months of drawing in it, I was flying through the modeling stage!
Stay tuned, I have plenty of masks coming up soon <3
Anarchy's ref sheet update is going alright, still making some changes. The torso may get some reworking, and thankfully we caught that before I started the elemental tornado.
