(Downtown just down the street.) 😎😎😎👍🏽📚 Spent this afternoon (after a grueling trip to the dentist...) reading on some pretty chill zines from the #lbplzinelibrary . I think Cool Dog was one of the funniest thing I've read in a while, #Fomozine had much truth to it, and I thoroughly enjoy Los Angeles street art & graffiti. Most zines were acquired from #LBZF (@lbzinefest) 2015/2016 and were fun to read. Today's library which I traveled to lies on the border of the community of Bixby Knolls in Long Beach. The Dana Library started as California Heights Station in 1928 at 913 Wardlow Road. The library moved to its present location in May 1958. Dana Neighborhood Library was dedicated to Richard Henry Dana Jr., who sailed out of Boston on the Pilgrim to the California coast and later wrote Two Years Before the Mast. Growing up next to Dana Point, his stories were a staple for our local community about trade and exploration of the Californian coast. A hidden gem to the neighborhood right by Trader Joe's and directly behind Lazy Acres off of Bellflower and Stearns, the Los Altos Library opened in January 1957, and has stood here as a favorite library to the surrounding youth and community ever since. The land was donated to the city by local residents Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd S. Whaley which a park is dedicated in their honor and givings to the city just down the street. #TBT to when I accidentally stumbled upon this show on my birthday in Paris titled Frida Kahlo / Diego Rivera: Art in Fusion where I learned and saw how masterful both artists were in their careers and also learned (embarrassingly not known at the time) that they both had a time living in Detroit where still to this day, the painting by Frida, Henry Ford Hospital (The Flying Bed) is still one of the most captivating pieces of work I have ever seen. Sadly I couldn't get a photo of it because there were guards everywhere not allowing any photos and were making people delete them on the spot so it was funny that I pretended to be on my phone to take this one. I know this is a long and descriptive post but I had no knowledge of this show, and being a major art buff at the time, I really didn't know much of Frida and Diego. I would call this moment an unexpected shift of perspective as I came to Paris to solely look at its art and I discovered so much more. Frida is cool and an inspiration to many people across the globe. After being entranced by all of her paintings it made me appreciate art in an entirely different way. Somebody who broke the mold and inspired a new generation of artists. Today I'm celebrating one of my favorite albums that came out 22 years ago....Korn, Korn. An album that defined #numetal and many other bands for the decade. It was an awesome memory meeting Jonathan and seeing how cool and mellow the band was for such a heavy sound with relatable music. If I had pick a favorite song it would be Blind (from their Woodstock '99 performance), which is off of this album. One of the best parts of my daily bike rides along the beach is passing by this library which probably has one of the nicest views of the water in the city. The Bay Shore Library branch was established in September 1929 at 194 Corona Avenue and then later moved to its current site, as part of the Selover Building off 2nd street in the popular Belmont Shore neighborhood and community. The current building opened in April 1959. Along side that, famous artist Taro Yashima, was commissioned to create five paintings for the children's section. The Bay Shore Neighborhood Library is named after Alamitos Bay, which the building overlooks and Belmont Shore, the community it serves. Just got my small batch of transferred zines today from both the Mark Twain branch and the downtown library from their circulating zine collection. What I think is cool is that you can have any zine from the collection transferred for free to any of the 12 local Long Beach Libraries. So whether it's for Latino Heritage Month, Dia de Los Muertos, any upcoming zine fest, or even the next election, there's a gold mine of zines available for everybody to enjoy and explore.
