Serious question, do you wholeheartedly believe that your team Canada hockey players are any less conservative? Because they arenāt. They willingly play for and promote an organization thatās okay with covering sexual assault. They willingly play for and promote a country who has its own slew of controversy and corruption embedded into its own political system. Stop acting as if youāre morally above people just because you support a different evil organization.
You think I donāt know that? Lol. I promise you, I am very aware that Team Canada isnāt any better. Hockey Canada has its own deeply messed up history and Iāve never denied that. Please donāt talk to me like Iām naive or morally grandstanding. I know exactly what Canada has done.
But thatās not what weāre talking about right now.
Being angry about Team USAās choices and specifically what happened in that locker room does not suddenly mean I think Team (Canada) is some morally superior utopia.
Itās not a competition of which country is less terrible. Both can have serious issues. Both can deserve criticism.
Right now, Iām reacting to Team USA. Iām reacting to the phone call that happened in their locker room. Iām reacting to the misogynistic comments about women. Iām reacting to the ānorthern borderā remarks. Thatās the situation at hand.
Pointing at Team Canada every time someone criticizes Team USA feels like deflection.
Acknowledging Canadaās problems does not cancel out what happened here. We can hold multiple truths at once: Canada has done awful things. Team USA players can also say and do awful things. Calling one out doesnāt excuse the other.
And if weāre being honest? Hockey culture across the board has a conservatism and misogyny problem. Thatās not exclusive to one flag. So yes, if Iām criticizing Team USA players for misogyny or conservative politics that harm people, that energy applies to Team Canada players too. No one is getting a free pass from me just because they wear a different jersey!!
But this conversation, in this moment, is about Team USA. Thatās it.
Iām allowed to be upset about a specific incident without turning it into a comparative morality debate between countries. Respect what Iām actually reacting to instead of redirecting it somewhere else.
