I'm a little out of practice with these two but I love the overprotective idea enough to expand on it. A bit ooc.

He doesn't want him to get hurt, and so he generally stays away from anything dangerous when they're together
Honestly it bugs Johnny because he knows he doesn't need it, but he also knows it's just Dally not wanting to see him hurt
Is that because he doesn't know how to deal with the situation?
Dal doesn't entirely know how to comfort people, and he doesn't want to be in a situation where it's necessary and he is the only one there.
If Johnny got really hurt somehow, he would be.
At the same time tho, would hardly trust any doctors to take care of him that well and sneaks into his room to have snacks.
We all know hospital food ain't shit
I know it's not timely but if it was a more modern au, Johnny'd definetly play animal crossing and get Dal into it. He wouldn't admit it tho.
Anyway back to good overprotective bf
He actually gets jealous p easily
He knows none of the gang are gonna do anything but if he can't be included in something he's just.
It's that 'I want to be the only one giving my bf love >:(' kinda deal
Anyway if either of them gets hit on, Dally is Very Very straightforward that they're taken.
So straightforward, in fact, he will not use words.
Kiss him. pick him up. maybe a little bit of hugging from behind hugging and neck kissies.

Johnny is the type to diffuse diffuse diffuse but then get really sad about it later
And even though it might not be the best thing to do, Dal defends them both and will Not Back Down no matter who it is.
That honestly scares Johnny because people are ruthless and he could get really hurt
He gets upset, but more that it happened in the first place, and he's scared that Dal could have gotten in a lot more trouble than he does.
He's always the one to pull him back before things get serious.
Usually the one who apologizes.
He can stand up for himself, but doesn't because he's a minority to begin with, he's very small, and he doesn't want anyone to get hurt, including himself.
(Even though he would gladly get hurt so no one else has to)
Once everything calms down, Johnny gets really upset. Not at Dally, again, at the situation.
But remember when I said that Dal's not good at comforting people
He tries his best but it's not that good
That's all Johnny needs to feel better.
