John Walker Appreciation Week Days 1-3

Day One: Favorite Fan Theory

Ima be completely honest, I don’t know if this is a fan theory or something that was in the comics. John always felt closer to Lemar’s family than his own. During school it was always Lemar and his family that celebrated his accomplishments and helped him through bad times.

Day Two: John with another character’s powers

I think it’d be cool if he had Wanda’s powers. More because I think it’d fit his character to let his government experiment on him, then just wanting to see him with reality warping powers. Although that would be fun to see.

Day Three Substitute: Favorite cute moment

I don’t know what it is but the motion and face he makes after Ava vanishes just scratches my brain

omg i love the idea of john having some sort of reality-warping powers bc of government experimentation!! maybe he doesn’t realize he has powers at first? like he goes though the experiments and…nothing seems to happen. the government is at a bit of a loss about him bc he’s not showing any negative effects, which is good, but also everything else is reading as normal too, and they were hoping for more.

so they have him tested again to see if the experiment bore any delayed results (possible tie-in to the GMA interviewer mentioned that john was tested by MIT and scored “off the charts on speed, endurance, intelligence…” in tfatws ep2), but it’s the same. his physicality is good, great even, but not superhuman (or so it seems).

enter: the events of tfatws.

john takes the super soldier serum, and similar to how the mind stone unlocked wanda’s innate ability to harness chaos magic, the serum unlocks the power that the assumed-failed gov experiment gave him. it’s barely been several hours after he’s taken the serum when he and lemar off trying to chase another lead on the flag smashers. john’s incredibly twitchy. he’s had no time to adjust to the serum, much less recognize there’s a whole other power that got unlocked with it.

then lemar dies.

and john pulls a westview.

Maybe there are smaller things that change before his powers are unlocked. Did his eyes always have a slight red hue to them? Were his dreams always this vivid? The people who would normally come rushing up for autographs strangely don’t noice him as often.

their mission had a rough start, and on top of his efforts trying to adapt to the publicity that comes with the mantle and the shield, it’s not been easy. but he’s grateful that people don’t seem to be approaching as much anymore. he’s grateful that lemar’s injury wasn’t too bad. maybe, john thinks, maybe they’ll have some luck with the flag smashers after lemar recovers. in fact, it seems like things might finally start to work out in their favor - as long as he doesn’t think about it too much.

so he doesn’t.

john just pushes it to the back of his mind and presses on. sam and bucky keep trying to talk to him, but he’s not in the mood to listen to them anymore. he doesn’t understand why they keep trying to hurt in now they’ve been so against being a team since the start, and there’s something at the back of his mind saying - well, it doesn’t matter. he can’t be worried about sam and bucky right now. not when he ought to go check on how lemar’s recovery is going along.

although. which hospital was lemar healing up at again? and why does john keep having that nightmare that karli’s hit had - no, no, it’s fine, everything is fine. there’s red in his eyes and fear in his heart and grief that he can’t process and he’s not going to think about it, bc if he thinks about it too much, he’ll have to confront what he already knows deep down. and he doesn’t want to do that. he can’t accept that all of this is a lie of his own creation. he has to believe that lemar is okay.

meanwhile, sam and bucky are realizing that john is very much Not Well and are at a loss on how to reach him. they’d been so caught up on dismissing john as Not Steve that they don’t actually know anything about john or how to go about connecting with him. sam and bucky both know what it’s like to lose a partner - with riley, with steve - and clearly, lemar is important to john, but what’s the history there?

they know he’s from georgia from that GMA interview, and maybe have a vague idea he’s married, but what’s else? and where did these powers come from? sam and bucky start to speculate that, maybe, the government wanted to make sure that the “new captain america” was a super soldier before sending him out. but if that was the case, wouldn’t that have been part of the publicity? was this something walker did himself? or maybe an accident?

they’re not sure, and the only one with answers doesn’t seem to even realize that he’s doing anything at all. (their initial efforts include trying to mention lemar, but john shuts down any and all conversation about that, which is what tips them off that john is behind what’s going on. unfortunately, their awareness isn’t really helping them get past john’s denial. the first stage of grief has struck hard.)
