"Creatives deserve to be paid" and "We desperately need community spaces for creatives that aren't focused on trying to make money or advance careers where we're allowed to make connections and experiment" are two statements that can and should coexist.
I don’t think I’ll ever understand the criticism of “There wasn’t enough information given about *enter thing here*” when it comes certain sub-genres of horror. (phycological, surreal, and eldritch/cosmic specifically) Like I get it can be a legitimate criticism but then there are movies where that’s the point? (Insightful Llama on youtube has a lot of points I agree with about Backrooms and Iron Lung)
TLDR: While there are valid criticisms about what information is given and how the information is handled in horror, critics need to understand why the writer isn’t giving you that information. And if the sub genre has anything to do with it. I find it kinda stupid that critics don’t try to find out why we weren’t given information or why the writer gave us the information the way they did. Especially in horror!
Like with Annihilation, The Backrooms or Iron Lung. I’ve seen a lot of people using the fact we didn’t get much information on the organizations or the creatures as a criticism. You can want more information, thats fine, but if you, as a critic, are giving a piece of media shit because of something the writer clearly did for a reason, then I think you are failing as a critic.
I love criticizing media especially media that I love. But the thing is I will always try to put story and the artist’s intent before anything, and I feel most critics don’t do that. You don’t need to know what the shimmer is. No one knows what it is. That’s the point. You don’t need more information about Async. Our characters don’t know anything about it. Because that’s not the point. You don’t need to know what caused the quiet rapture or more about the organizations in the world because you’re given the information you need to understand the story. If you want to argue the information was given in a confusing or bad way that’s fine but you need to say why you think that and how the writer/artist can fix it. Even if it’s just a quick. “Something feels off and you could have done this instead”
That Backrooms specifically is a good example of what I mean when I say “we need more information” can be a legitimate criticism but can also be a moot point because of the writer’s intent.
With Async we’re not supposed to know much. They’re a company that knows of the backrooms and that’s all we need to know. Also, if you’re that interested go watch Kane’s youtube. But for the movie we don’t need anymore information on Async then we get.
Then we have Mary. (This is my biggest criticism of the movie though tell me if I missed anything) Her backstory doesn’t actually tell us anything. Why did she become a therapist? Probably because of how her mother treated her and the world around them. Why does she take medication? Probably for anxiety or panic attacks? But we don’t actually know. She also only takes them once. Why did she continue looking for Clark in the backrooms? She could have gone to get help or just nope out of the situation. Well she feels responsible for her patients. Does that mean this is something she’d do for all her patients or is it something about Clark specifically? Why does she say that she can’t save anyone? We haven’t seen her outwardly struggle with wanting to save people before. Did she have other patients that she couldn’t help or is this because of her mother’s accident?
I’ve seen people say that her backstory and arc are on purpose. As she’s in a metaphorical liminal space herself when we meet her and the ending is her being trapped in her own physical liminal space. I like that but that’s not exactly what I’m talking about. The two things I could think of to fix those problems are: Having some type of label for the medication. I’m not sure if it’s meant to be an illegal substance or not? But even just having a poorly drawn face depicting what it does would have been fine. And have her take it multiple times. Like after Clark try’s to tell her about the backrooms or before she goes into the store. The second is have someone blame her for what happened to her mother. It could be anyone. But just having someone go “How could you let this happen?” or something along those lines.
But even with my own criticisms, the movie does an amazing job at giving viewers the information they need. I think many people don’t realize that different sub genres of horror give different information and show it in different ways. And for a surreal phycological horror the backrooms did amazing. Surreal horror runs on dream logic and is meant to be uncanny to invoke fear. Like how some people find Salvador Dali’s paintings weird or creepy. Phycological horror uses the character’s emotions and distress to invoke fear. Like how Stephen King focuses on writing the fear of his characters instead of the thing that’s scaring them. The same with Annihilation, a surreal cosmic horror, that gives information through flashbacks and things found from the previous group. And Iron Lung, a phycological cosmic horror, that keeps its information close to itch chest for the viewers to pick apart. The way each presents its information is different because they’re all combining the same three sub genres differently and to criticize them the same is just insulting. To be fair my favorite movie is John Carpenter’s The Thing (which is arctic horror a fun mix of isolation, survival and identity horror) and that did not do well when it first came out, though that was more because of the gore and ambiguous ending.

Y'know what no actually I'm posting about this because it's genuinely really fucking getting to me.
I'm so fucking exhausted by how it feels like some people just took "some asexual people can still want sex, and that doesn't make them no longer ace" and just devolved into "oh so ace people can want sex? cool well i'm going to assume ace people/ace characters must want sex at least a LITTLE 'cause who doesn't?"
It's genuinely really fucking upsetting that as an aroace, even in LGBTQ+ spaces, even in asexual spaces, I feel like I'm STILL faced with the same acephobia I would get from non-LGBTQ+ people. From non-asexual people. I feel like I'm still having to face the bullshit of "I don't care if you say you're asexual, there are asexual people who do want sex and do have sex so you're still the weird one."
I feel like I still have to face that fucking idea that "everyone wants it, you'll want it eventually, or you'll do it because a partner wants it." No! I don't! and I'm tired of people in my own fucking community making me feel even more fucking broken and alone and making me feel like now instead of being discriminated against for being asexual, it's just turned into being discriminated against for being "one of those asexuals." in the fucking "I'm not like those queer people" way.
I'm just so exhausted by this shit. Obviously I think asexual people who do want or have sex are valid. But I'm fucking tired of people making me feel like I must be broken and there must be something wrong with me if I'm an asexual who doesn't have or want sex.
it just genuinely makes me feel like.. if being asexual means you're still gonna get perceived as maybe wanting sex and if being open about being a sex-repulsed asexual gets people saying "well don't push your trauma onto other people/make it other people's problem" then what the fuck am i that people can relate to. because it just. makes me feel like the community of people who are like me is a lot smaller than i thought.
I’m not even sex repulsed and I hate whenever someone (especially if they aren’t eve ace) brings it up! I especially hate the “You’ll do it for your partner!” No!!! If my partner respects me in any way then they’ll understand that I don’t want that. And if they’re that insistent then maybe we were never partners in the first place.
I hate the “You’re just ace because of trauma.” Which is such an insensitive argument. Firstly not everyone who’s ace has sexual trauma and Secondly why are you trying to force someone to have sex/partake in sexual discussions if they have sexual trauma!? And it’s trauma the least you can do is be respectful of it!

I personally use sex as a self harming method. So I find it so fucking insensitive and tiring to argue that I don’t want to have sex with someone. I shouldn’t need to bring up why I don’t want sex just to get my point across! And even if I do it’s “You can’t use sex as self harm” or “You must have sexual trauma” or “Once you have sex with someone that feeling will change.” Like!? Yes! You can use sex as self harm. If you’re forcing yourself to have sex then it’s self harm. No, I do not have sexual trauma. I started using sex as a replacement for cutting because my dumbass thought it would help with the urges to self harm. And my feelings on it will not change! If anything they’ll just shift and I’ll use my partner as another way to harm myself! I don’t want that! and if they’re my partner they shouldn’t want that either!

I’m watching that documentary “Before Stonewall” about gay history pre-1969, and uncovered something which I think is interesting.
The documentary includes a brief clip of a 1954 televised newscast about the rise of homosexuality. The host of the program interviewed psychologists, a police officer, and one “known homosexual”. The “known homosexual” is 22 years old. He identifies himself as Curtis White, which is a pseudonym; his name is actually Dale Olson.
So I tracked down the newscast. According to what I can find, Dale Olson may have been the first gay man to appear openly on television and defend his sexual orientation. He explains that there’s nothing wrong with him mentally and he’s never been arrested. When asked whether he’d take a cure if it existed, he says no. When asked whether his family knows he’s gay, he says that they didn’t up until tonight, but he guesses they’re going to find out, and he’ll probably be fired from his job as well. So of course the host is like …why are you doing this interview then? and Dale Olson, cool as cucumber pie, says “I think that this way I can be a little useful to someone besides myself.”
1954. 22 years old. Balls of pure titanium.
Despite the pseudonym, Dale’s boss did indeed recognize him from the TV program, and he was promptly fired the next day. He wrote into ONE magazine six months later to reassure readers that he had gotten a new job at a higher salary.
Curious about what became of him, I looked into his life a little further. It turns out that he ultimately became a very successful publicity agent. He promoted the Rocky movies and Superman. Not only that, but get this: Dale represented Rock Hudson, and he was the person who convinced him to disclose that he had AIDS! He wrote the statement Rock read. And as we know, Rock Hudson’s disclosure had a very significant effect on the national conversation about AIDS in the U.S.
It appears that no one has made the connection between Dale Olson the publicity agent instrumental in the AIDS debate and Dale Olson the 22-year-old first openly gay man on TV. So I thought I’d make it. For Pride month, an unsung gay hero.
