As photographers, we have the opportunity to get to meet new people all the time, but even more importantly, we have the chance to really become an essential part of building peopleâs legacies for so many more years to come!
We had the honor of photographing Sarah and Austin for their engagement photos at the Arbor Hill Nature Preserve in Plano and we all had such a blast!
In order to provide the BEST possible experience for our clients, we must go above and beyond and take every step we can to get to know each and every single one of them. We need to understand the dynamic between the two of them, what they enjoy doing the most, what really makes them smile, and most of all, we need to make them feel comfortable in front of the camera!
WHY ARE THESE SESSIONS IMPORTANT?
1 â You get to know more about the personalities of your clients!
We have found that a majority of couples are pretty uncomfortable when it comes to taking âformalâ photos together, but thatâs where an engagement session is a perfect opportunity for the couple to have a âtest runâ of what it feels like to be in front of the camera! More importantly, it is a perfect opportunity for the couple to get to know you and for you, the photographer, to get to know more about your clients!
Are they timid, outgoing?
Do they like PDA or completely the opposite?
Are they more reserved or are they more adventurous?
Do they move pretty naturally or do you have to direct/pose them?
Do they prefer a certain side to be photographed?
2 â You get to know more about their style
What kind of style do your clients like?
Itâs important to understand what kind of style your clients like the most so you can deliver images and products that they will resonate well with! You want them showing off your work to friends and family and you want them to hang them on their walls. They wonât show of anything that doesnât truly connect with them, so these engagement sessions will help you understand their style and what look and feel they are wanting!
3- Photos can be used for invites, save the dates, canvas shots, guest books, albums, coffee table book!
These are like little marketing tools for you! People get to see your work prior to a wedding and you can use these shots to book more brides.
âWe donât really have nice pictures of us. We usually just use our phones and take selfies of each other so it would be nice to get pictures done of ourselves and get some printed or something like that.â
We have found that most couples donât usually have professional photos done with each other. This is usually the first time this happens for them! These engagement session photos go a long way đ
4 â Your Chance to Get Creative
Sometimes there are different shots/angles you want to get or different lighting techniques you would like to try out. After youâve gotten your go-to winning shots, you can have your chance to get creative! Each couple is different so you can use your creativity to showcase their uniqueness! It also gives them something special that they can call their own!
5 â You get used to working with your clients and they get used to you!
You guys are going to be spending a lot of time together on the big day, so hereâs your chance to get to build their trust in you! Aside from their wedding planner (if they have one), you will be their designated go-to person for the day! You get to play photographer, timeline keeper, and stress-relieving psychologist for the day, so get to know who youâre working with!
This goes for both you AND the couple! The more and more you do, the better you get! The more and more they get in front of the camera, the better they understand how to move and how to pose themselves in front of a camera. Practice makes perfect right?!
