Rotary drum dryers are core supporting machine for biomass pellet production lines. They are specially designed for high-moisture agricultural and forestry waste such as sawdust, wood chips, straw, and rice husks. Through drum rotation and hot air counter-current/co-current heat exchange, high-moisture raw materials are stably dried to the standard moisture content for pelleting (12%–18%). This solves industry pain points such as loose pellets, low forming rate, declining output, and large ring die loss caused by excessive raw material moisture. They are suitable for pellet production lines with a capacity of 1–30 tons per hour and are available in two main models: single-drum and three-pass three-layer drum.

Working Principle Feeding: Wet biomass is fed into the feed end of the drum via a sealed screw feeder. The drum is installed at a slight inclination (3°–5° angle) and moves slowly towards the discharge end under its own weight. Lifting and Heat Exchange: The drum rotates at a uniform speed, and internal multi-stage lifting plates continuously lift and scatter the material, spreading it out in a 360° uniform material curtain. The hot air furnace generates clean hot air at 120–350°C, which fully contacts the material. Single Drum: Co-current drying, suitable for ultra-high moisture large wood chips. Three-Pass, Three-Layer: The inner, outer, and middle layers exchange heat counter-currently. The material travels back and forth through the three layers, extending the drying time, increasing heat utilization by 40%, and requiring less floor space. Dehydration and Discharge: The internal moisture of the material evaporates rapidly, and the dry material is continuously discharged from the tail end and conveyed to the pelleting section. Exhaust Gas Dust Removal: Waste heat gas containing water vapor and dust is sent to a cyclone + bag filter by an induced draft fan. Dust is recovered and reused, and clean exhaust gas is emitted.

Cold air rises from bottom, hot pellets drop down from top, material and air contact oppositely to realize full heat exchange by natural air. It’s pure natural air cooling without water cooling system.

Q2: Is this machine water-cooled or air-cooled? A: It is 100% natural air cooling equipment, no water circulation device needed, saves water cost and avoids rust problems.

Q3: What materials can this counter-flow cooler cool? A: It mainly suits all granular/pellet materials: livestock & poultry feed pellets, aquafeed pellets, wood biomass fuel pellets, organic fertilizer pellets, extruded granular products, plastic particles, etc.

Q5: How much temperature can the machine reduce for hot pellets? A: Fresh extruded pellets usually come out at 75~90℃. After counter-flow cooling, pellet temperature can drop to room temperature +3~5℃, moisture will also be reduced properly to prevent pellet mildew.

Q6: Will the pellets break a lot during cooling? A: Counter-flow design makes slow and gentle pellet falling, greatly lower pellet breakage rate than horizontal coolers, finished pellets keep complete shape.

Q7: Does this cooler need extra cooling tower? A: No. It only relies on natural air blower for heat dissipation, no cooling tower, no water pump, low power consumption and fewer auxiliary machines.
