I get being a fan of specific Starkid content, but at least be willing to give their new and unreleased content a chance!! If you love their content at all then I think it's fair to say they deserve that adoration elsewhere too. This show may not be Hatchetfield, but it is something deep and personal to them. You can tell from the way they're pouring themselves into it that they have high hopes and good feelings going into this show. So PLEASE. Stop saying it's just "not your thing" because you don't know! The theme may not speak to you, but it's a show by creators we care about so give it a chance. GIVE THEM A CHANCE!

Upon my last viewing of Cinderella's Castle I have become convinced that most "modern fairytale retellings" don't really get the point. The complaint about Cinderella is always that "oh she's so passive and has to be saved by a MAN" and the people making these complaints don't think about how for a very, very long time, marriage was the only way for young women to leave their abusive families, and marriage is not guaranteed to be abuse free. Cinderella's Castle doesn't take the story about abuse and make it "she doesn't need a man, she can save herself", it's a revenge story. That's what "feminist" retellings lack. Cinderella is a fantasy about escaping abuse and for girls today, the fantasy is no longer "I wish I could get married to a rich powerful man and get away from my abusive family" it's "I wish I could enact revenge"

Many attempts to make stories more progressive for a contemporary audience fail to analyse what exactly the outdated or regressive elements of a story actually mean and think that simply removing those elements is enough to make it modern and feminist, when in reality you just removed all the layers without adding any new layers or rethinking the narrative in a way that is compelling. Let's say that Cinderella doesn't need the prince to save her. She still needs to escape somehow. If she can just save herself because she's a #girlboss then what's the point of telling the story? That's boring. I like that CC doesn't turn Ella into a generic girlboss character. She does need help! She needs the help of Justine and Lucy, the help of the fairy queen, the help of Sir Hop-a-lot and Crumb, and the help of Tadius. She doesn't need the prince! She doesn't marry him! She isn't rescued in the end, instead, she gets to take revenge on her stepmother! And the revenge is cathartic because of how much she has lost over the course of the story!!!!

Also I just want to note that having one of the stepsisters marry the prince only for both of them to die is a really clever way to get Ella to the throne without making her get married

I know it’s because her dad is canonically black and we’ve never met her mom but I love that everyone in the Starkid fandom has collectively agreed that Steph is mixed. Like people choose different interpretations in their fanart (hair texture, skin color, etc) but the one thing they all have in common is Steph is almost never fully white.
