She went home running, hiding behind a half-truth behind her younger sister like it was temporary, attempting to pause whatever was unfolding in Korea. like always, she ran the other way. But things don't work like that.

She spent her days writing little notes, sent them off to her friends, notifying them she was still trying, despite the long winded silence from her end.

Though she finally came to the realization that there was someone else who existed in this realm that knew her enough to understand the chaos, someone who doesn't rush her into being okay, someone who comforts her in silence.

( ★ BRI AND JUNIE )── there was something so special about celebrating someone’s existence: the simple act of saying i’m so glad you’re here always filled junie’s heart to the brim. with extra fondess. She felt terrible for missing the actual celebration (even though the pre birthday sleepover was fun, thought it wasn’t enough) but if there was any way to make up for it, it was by dedicating a whole day to whimsy activities.

lotte world felt perfect for the occasion. something about it always reminded her of a different timeline, a place translating between childhood and now, where everything was soft, nostalgic, and a little bit healing. a place where laughter echoed off lights, and they could take the silliest photobooth pictures without a care in the world.

the drive wasn’t too far, which worked in her favor. junie made sure to leave early so they could squeeze every drop of fun out of the day. by the time she arrived to the linked location attached to their conversation, the morning light was golden and the weather was perfect. she sent a quick text, grinning at her own message as she hit send:

she had come home late that night, hair still damp from the evening air after volunteering. exhaustion clung to her shoulders, but so did that soft healthy glow she always carried after doing something that meant something deeper to her. it actually gave him time: time to pace, to rehearse, to pretend he hadn’t been rehearsing at all.

junie was mid-story, talking about how one of the kids kept complimenting her hello kitty sweater, her laughter spilling over the table, when he cut in gently. “you talk about the kids like they’re your own,” he said, smiling, feeding her another bite of her half-eaten steak.  she nudged him, laughing, “i love the little ones.” “they kind of are,” he murmured. she didn’t think much of it. until she saw the look in his eyes. not intense, not nervous, but steady. certain. like he’d already made up his mind about something big.

he didn’t kneel. didn’t make a speech. instead, he reached across the table, fingers brushing hers, thumb tracing slow circles over her skin. “i don’t have a plan,” he said quietly, voice trembling around the edges. “but i know i want to keep coming home to this. to you.”

her breath halted at the sudden confession, a rush of emotions washing over her. surprise first, then warmth, blooming all at once. they’d talked about the future before, in that dreamy, faraway way that lovers do, but never like this. never now. he reached into his pocket, the movement almost too casual for what followed. the ring was simple, silver, slightly imperfect, like something that had lived in his hands longer than it should’ve. “marry me, junie,” he begged, almost pathetically, like she was slipping between her fingers. She laughed through the tears that came too fast, half a sob caught in her throat. “i love you,” she managed to breathe out, and he smiled before nodding infinitely. “yes, yes, i'll marry you.”  His hands came up to cup her face, and the warmth of it made everything feel real. She doesn't know how, but he manages to slip the ring on with his trembling hands. She couldn't take her eyes off the ring; not because she was materialistic, but because it was something that marked a new chapter for the future, for the rest of her life. their life.
