There are a few posts going around tumblr that have hundreds of thousands of notes and talk about torrents that you can go to for textbooks.

My advice?

Don’t.

Those are illegal.

I hate to be the stick in the mud here, but yeah, those are illegal.

And seeing as how a lot of you will be logged onto your college server and they can see any website that you go on, I wouldn’t recommend it. You might have your internet privileges revoked. Or face disciplinary actions. Is it worth it?

Besides, a ton of those websites are filled with viruses.

So, you may have saved a few hundred dollars on a textbook but now you need to buy a new computer and are facing consequences from the school.

I know that textbooks are outrageously expensive. And I hate it. But it’s not worth the trouble to try and illegally obtain them.

So, what would I recommend?

Talk to your professor. They might have a few extra textbooks for you to use.

Go to your college library. I worked in the library at my old college for a year and we had an entire shelf of textbooks that students could rent for two hours.

Put up a bulletin board where students can sell their old books and see if someone’s selling the book that you need.

Ask your professor if you can get the an older edition of a book. They’re usually a lot cheaper.

Here are five LEGAL websites that I would recommend:

amazon.com - Not only do they rent books, they also sell used books. I’ve found some really great deals before.

textbookrush.com - Again, they sell used books. I once got a $300 book for $35.

chegg.com - I know a lot of students who use this.

bookbyte.com - I also know a lot of students who use this.

                        Audition for ANY character in Les Amis!

What will the blog involve?           Anybody who is invited to the blog will have full access to the inbox and creation of posts on the blog. As a group, we can discuss plots together. All members will have creative control and will be able to request that we do certain things with their characters.       The characters on the blog will be modern day characters.

Why should I audition?           Members will have creative control over their characters and any storylines or plots that they want to do should be okay as long as they’re discussed with either me or Jess beforehand.      You’ll be able to meet new people and make new friends who also love Les Mis (yay)      All members will get a free promo on my personal blog to over 4,300 people.

How to audition

Send this blog an ask featuring the name of the character you wish to play and your url. Please also include an introductory paragraph to your character. This paragraph does not have to be written from the POV of the character - it can purely be written by describing them. Your character can be any variation of the original characters written by Victor Hugo. For example, they could be a different gender (e.g. cisgender female, trans guy, trans woman), have a different sexuality or have different hobbies. Providing that the character follows the original personality (e.g. Grantaire the sceptic and Jehan the adorable lil shit) any other character traits are okay.

Things you’ll need:

Brown craft foam

Aluminum foil

Clothes iron

Ironing board

Black paint

Brown paint (lighter than your foam)

Paint brush

Paper towel

Grab some aluminum foil and crumble it into a ball. Not too tight of a ball though! The next step is almost impossible if you do. 

Next, un-crumple the ball. Flatten it out into one layer. It’s fine if there are a few holes.

Place it on top of your foam.

Take your iron and firmly press it on the foam and aluminum. My iron was set to 3 (polyester) but the correct temperature may be different for other irons. Just remember not to use steam! Before doing this on a large piece, be sure to experiment and figure out what the best temperature and what the best pressure is. On larger pieces, you’ll have to move the aluminum around a lot. It’s not a quick process.

Now you’ve got this crinkly affect on the foam. Next is painting!

Grab you’re brush, black paint, and a dish with some water. The idea is to dilute the black paint enough so that when you apply it the paint will seep into the divets the aluminum created. 

Once the watery paint is applied, wipe it off with a paper towel. Continue to do this for your whole piece of foam.

Now here’s an optional step (of which I haven’t done myself but I’ve known others who have):

Grab the light brown paint and, without diluting it, paint it on. It’s best to use a coarse brush in this case and to try to keep it out of the divets. Wipe some of the paint off. 

Remember, imperfections are always good! Uneven paint isn’t necessarily bad so just experiment with it.
