Sorcerer Subclass: Privileged Lineage

Dragons and demons are fine, I guess, but some sorcerers are born into a much older and more terrifying power: generational wealth. The Privileged Lineage is a nepo baby spellcaster who trace their magic to a very generous trust fund and a parent who owns a small plane of existence who has never told them no.

Where the Corporate Ladder Barbarian subclass I posted a while back finally snapped under fluorescent lights, this sorcerer thrives in them. They treat adventuring like an extended internship they are already overqualified for and a lifetime of unearned confidence that somehow keeps working. Consequences are for other people.

This is a joke subclass made for urban one-shots and modern settings, the kind of character you roll up when the table needs a villain who thinks they are the hero but behaves like the worst person in the room.

Transmogrify 4th-level Transmutation | Druid, Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard

You twist an ally's flesh and rebuild it into something monstrous. This spell was built to sit right between Haste and Polymorph because a little mutation and arcane radiation is always a good time. Beast-like, thick fur sprouts, wings burst free, and jagged horns push through their brows etched with a glowing sigil. Their claws crackle with raw energy and become their best weapon, even if Stealth takes a serious hit while they are in this fearsome form. All it takes is a very ripe banana.

Blightstring Weapon (any bow or crossbow), Rare (requires attunement)

Closing out this grimdark series with a bow that was pried from a ranger whose hands had fused to the grip after years of hunting in the abyss. This item is inspired by Varus from League of Legends, as I felt the ranger subclass would suit that champion's abilities perfectly. The Blightstring is carved from a pale, flesh-like wood and pulses with an eerie heartbeat. Projectiles loosed from it cause the string to contract like a living cord, leaving wounds like a festering mark on the target that may erupt in a gruesome display of rot and corrupted tendrils that drag enemies down and spread like a disease.

This weapon does not let go of its victims, but that also applies to its wielder.

Feat: Abyssal Fletcher

Turning the remains of the fallen into ammunition is dark but effective. This feat lets any archer harvest bone and sinew from fallen creatures, crafting cursed projectiles that carry the blighted decay of the abyss right into your target's flesh.

These solitary hunters are set apart by their tribes and sent into perilous places, tasked with hunting horrors that would shatter the minds of most adventurers.

The Hexbook Wondrous Item, Very Rare (requires attunement by a spellcaster)

This iron-bound tome once belonged to a witch who was burned at the stake for teaching forbidden magic. As she stood there, she poured a final curse into the book. A ghostly hand fused to the spine acts as a living bookmark, twitching whenever magic is near, while a green crystal embedded in the tome glows faintly with pure malice stored within.

Just be careful, as the book demands results, and failing your spells may cause you to feel a displeased, ghostly hand digging its fingers into your palm. This tome would especially shine in the hands of a School of Malediction wizard, but any spellcaster who dares to bind themselves to a witch’s vengeful legacy and weaponize their enemies’ successes would find it a valuable tool.

Following the decaying path of the knight, this second week I am reimagining the classic mage archetype. Instead of scholars studying safely in pristine towers and libraries, the School of Malediction wizards venture into collapsed temples and forbidden crypts, deliberately exposing themselves to ancient curses that most heroes try to avoid. Their mere presence feels deeply unsettling, causing candle flames to gutter without wind and mirrors to reflect things that are not there.

These spellcasters understand that a curse is a living entity, older and far more potent than any traditional spell. They willingly absorb this corrupting magic into their own flesh, acting as hollow vessels to redirect that same suffering outward to strike down their enemies.

Fighter Subclass: Rust Knight

There is something magnetic about a broken hero. For the first entry in this grim, dark fantasy series, I reimagined the fighter as a knight, not in shining armor but as someone who has fully embraced the inevitable decay of the world.

The Rust Knight transforms their own physical deterioration to their advantage, as the rot that should have killed them instead becomes a spreading plague. The wet creak of rusted joints in their armor, combined with the smell of damp earth and decayed fungi, makes the presence of these knights deeply unsettling. Their weapon strikes deliver bursts of acid that gnaw through armor, while their bodies shrug off poison and disease with an eerie calm.

This is the third and final post we’ve made for my "Monster Harvesting" series, crafting magic items from monsters' body parts in a very Monster Hunter style. Braided from the black tentacles of a six-legged feline predator, this whip slips past cover effortlessly, leaving shimmering afterimages with every swing and multiplying into phantom lashes while you blur in and out of an enemy’s vision. Oh, and similarly to the Scepter of the Accursed Eye, this is definitely NOT an item made from a Displacer Beast, for legal reasons…

This is the second of three posts we’ve made for my "Monster Harvesting" series, crafting magic items from monsters' body parts in a very Monster Hunter style. This bulky shield is made from the severed head of a large Ankheg, still clicking its mandibles and dripping with corrosive acid. Blocking a hit with it lets you spray sticky sludge right back at the attacker or snap the mandibles shut on a foe who misses you with an attack, locking them in place.

The image of a monster-slayer ranger or fighter wearing a monster’s head as a shield sounds really badass…
