Fires in Northern California
Iām making a post about this because there are things the media refuses to cover. As you may have heard, the majority of Northern California is currently on fire. As of now, the media is mostly focusing on the fire happening in the Northen Bay Area (Santa Rosa, Nappa, etc.) but thereās another huge fire happening about an hour north of there in Mendocino County that no one is reporting on.
The fire started Sunday night (10/8) around 10 pm. The cause is unknown. For a lot of people there was absolutely no warning. People began fleeing their homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs as everything around them was engulfed in flames. The fire spread quick due to the heavy winds, dry conditions, and the fact that itās a heavily wooded area. As of today, there are six people confirmed dead, and several injured. The fire is still raging, only 5% contained. Due to the harsh winds, fire fighters are finding it nearly impossible to contain.
Heres where it gets even worse. Thereās been a lot of damage to cellphone towers. People in certain areas canāt use their phones or internet to contact their loved ones or get updates on the fire. (Were one of the few lucky ones with an in tact house and satalite internet). For most people, the only source of information they can get is through the news outlets on their television. But the main news channels are refusing to cover this area. When we reached out to them this is what we were told:
Theyāre basically saying itās not their responsibility even though theyre the CLOSEST NEWS STATION. Eureka is much further than San Francisco, and itās much more difficult for them to get accurate information on this area, given that there are fires happening there too. (Not to mention KTVU has no problem reporting on Mendocino county when itās drug busts that are happening)
And itās not just phones and internet thatās not working. Roads are closed, and people are also unable to use their credit or debit cards, so if they donāt have cash theyāre basically screwed.
For the most part, the only way people have been getting updates on the fire is through social media, so for those who canāt access the internet, itās basically hell trying to figure out whatās happening and if theyāre loved ones are okay or not. Also the gas stations ran dry, so people couldnāt leave town if they didnāt have fuel and were stuck in a place isolated from the outside world.
All Iām asking is to please share this. Bring awareness to whatās happening. Just because weāre a small town doesnāt mean there arenāt hundreds of people here who desperately need help. Tweet at ktvu and ask them to cover this area. Please even donate if you can.
