Jerk. Bitch.

Right off the bat I am not vibing with this score. It's so much. So loud and kind of insufferably ethereal in a way that is more distracting than anything.

The blatant Skittles product placement is mildly amusing.

The fighter jet scene was... ridiculous, in a not serious way. And not a good not serious way. Not like whimsical, just... slapstick-ish. And not in a way that seems to fit with...

Fuck, this might have been a mistake.

I don't know what it is, but as I've gotten older I've found that I've become so much pickier about movies.

sigh

Okay, back to it.

So the scene where he was gotten up to speed on what Project Hail Mary is was alright, and the funeral service he had for the two deceased crew members was nice. But then we're back to slapstick when he reaches Tau Ceti... ugh. I'm sorry, but this guy is, apparently, quite smart and he fucking knew he was in space, weightlessness should not make him react like that. Is he part cartoon character?

Because do not get me wrong, I fucking love whimsy and silliness. This much whimsy and silliness does not feel like it meshes with the other elements. And yeah, the musical score is even wrong for it.

Also, there are so many gimmicky feeling camera movements in this. Camera movements that, like the score, are just distracting and make it harder to fucking see what the fuck is going on. Stop needlessly spinning the camera!

I got it! The fucking score in this scene reminds me of a heist movie from the 1960's. Which makes perfect sense, since the scene is the introduction of the alien spaceship.

(I hope you realize, anyone who actually decided to click in and read this, that I am being dramatic, I realize this, but in my defense, the movie set this tone first.)

Is this all just one slapstick setup after another bridged together with mildly engaging bits of actual story, all wrapped up in an obnoxiously over the top and wildly insane score??? Is this going to keep going on?

I'm 40 minutes in to a two and a half hour long movie, so I'm thinking this is just how this whole thing is going to go.

Fuck.

And then they dropped the crazy music so fucking suddenly when he goes over to the other ship that that seemed distracting! Fuck off.

The jump scare wasn't even startling because the cues are all wrong. There's no good build up. Jump scares only work if there is anticipation, then a misdirect, then a beat, and then the jump scare.

And finally a moment of subtly from the score and it's immediately after the jump scare.

I do not know why I'm so focused on the music!!! I am not a music person. I'm a visuals person. And the visuals are fine... gorgeous even. But the score is so fucking distracting! Now it feels like something out of Ratatouille... what the fuck???

Okay the "Don't like that voice." "Can't unhear it." "Scary" was funny. My first actual laugh in the movie and we're only an hour and eleven minutes in.

"He tells me what to do, he tells me why to do it, he tells me how to do it, he tells me when to do it. And then when I do it, he's like, "What are you doing?" <- also funny.

although the slapstick still doesn't feel like it fits.

Something that I really love in tv and movies (and books) is when a lot of different emotions are blended or bounced between. Like yes give me funny and scary together and I will be a happy camper... if it's done well, balanced well. This movie feels out of balance.
