Once upon a time, on a bright June morning, a little hedgehog named Quilly scurried out into the warm sunlight. His mother had sent him to gather strawberries to make a sweet summer jam. Pattering through the tall grass and shady green leaves, Quilly carefully picked the plumpest red berries. He couldn't wait for the evening, when his mother would bake fresh scones with clotted cream and jam, and the whole family would enjoy the warm treats together outside their cozy oak-tree home.

The hedgehog is a little beast

Who likes a quiet wood,

Where he can feed his family

On proper hedgehog food.

He has a funny little snout

That's rather like a pig's,

With which he smells, like us, of course,

But also runts and digs.

He wears the queerest prickle coat,

Instead of hair or fur,

And only has to curl himself

To bristle like a burr.
