i seem to have picked up some new followers for my Frozen content so i am bringing this back and just outright saying it.
Frozen IS NOT The Snow Queen.
Frozen IS Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, minus Edward Ferrars, plus ice powers.
let’s look for a moment at a purposefully vague and general plot summary. one that might go something like: “there are these sisters. and the older one is more stoic and less open with her emotions, and the younger one is passionate and interested in romance, and after an accident the younger one meets this handsome, charming guy, and they fall for each other, but after a series of events, he chooses his ambitions over his feelings for her, and she gets ill, and then in the end she ends up with this other guy who's shyer and more socially awkward” does it sound familiar? because it should.
but let’s go another step. let’s look at character names. Elinor and Elsa. Marianne and Anna. John Willoughby and Hans Westergaard. Colonol Brandon, who has no first name in the novel itself but was called Christopher in the 1995 film, and Kristoff Bjorgman. hmmm. gee. if you look up the etymology of John and Hans they even originate as the same name.
but surely this is just coincidence?
funny how that sounds like “Our mental synchronization/can have but one explanation”?
and—what’s that there that Elinor says about Willoughby when he sends that break-up letter to her sister?
huh, that sounds like a certain villain reveal that i absolutely hate with all my heart.
and then there’s the part that kicks me while i’m already down, i suppose. Willoughby chooses his ambitions/money over his feelings for Marianne. Hans chooses his ambitions/power over his feelings for Anna. but!
if Willoughby had made the right choice, he could have had both money and love. meanwhile, as of Frozen 2, Anna is Queen (or so i’m told; i haven’t actually watched 2, a choice i made out of protest for Hans not being in it), so if HANS had made the right choice, well. look at that. crown and love were on the table.
but, you know, i’m just weirdly fixated on both of these fictional men and cry over each of them every time i consume the media with them in it so maybe i’m reading too much into things.
