Jotaro never wanted to be a knight, his family had been personal knights to the royal family for generations. His grandfather, Joseph Joestar, was a knight, his father, Sadao Kujo, was a knight, and Jotaro was expected to follow in their example. His father is never home, always being sent on expeditions by the King, and his grandfather lives in the town over, having sacrificed his friends and his arm for the King’s father. Jotaro saw the royal family as pathetic, egotistical tyrants, and promised himself, even at a young age, he wouldn’t follow in his family's footsteps.
He always had a unique fascination with the sea, the palace was positioned right at the waters edge, a long beach on the palace grounds that the King would open to everyone on occasion. Those are Jotaro’s favorite days, where he would play on the shores as a child and venture there when he needed time alone, the sound of the waves crashing against the shore always calmed his racing mind. Jotaro wanted to be a scholar, to travel across the seas, his mother, Holly was sweet and supportive of his dream, doing what she could to support his dream on the stipends his father would send from overseas, purchasing any second-hand novel she could find related to the sea; Jotaro’s favorite book was an encyclopedia on starfish species, the cover faded and spine worn from years of re-reading it. When Holly fell ill from a mysterious disease, Jotaro had no choice but to join the Kings Order of Chivalry at only 17, for the sake of his mother’s health, the pay being too high to ignore, even his grandfather came out of his retirement to support his daughter.
Through the years Jotaro quickly grew in the ranks, his popularity sky-rocketed, he was known as stoic and calculated, a brilliant warrior. His crusades built him up, his shoulders grew wide, muscles bulking under his custom sized armor, he towered over everyone, and let his hair grow unruly. Towns women and palace maids alike now swooned over him, despite his terribly foul mood that developed, the women were constantly approaching him in the street or watching him during training, in hopes of catching his eye. It didn’t help that he was older than what was considered the expected age to marry, despite only being 21.
Now as he kneels before the King, the last thing he expected was to become the King’s child’s personal knight. The rumors claimed they were a bratty child, stomping and whining until they got what they wanted, always demanding more and more. While Jotaro usually dismissed rumors, he couldn’t help but be slightly influenced by these ones, since he believed the royal family was the cause of all his misfortune.
The King lounges in his pristine throne, his personal maid fanning him, as if he were an Egyptian God. “I would trust no one else to protect my child, the Joestar’s have protected the Eridian people and my family for generations, your father was a good man who put his life on the line for me persistantly.”
Jotaro simply keeps his gaze cast to the floor, biting his tongue out of anger. He’s upset at his mother’s worsening condition, and he knows becoming a personal knight will only prevent him from the exploration he desperately needs to do to cure his mother. While he wishes to fight back, he knows the word of the King is law, and in the best case scenario Jotaro would only be given a few lashes. “No need to downcast your gaze my boy, please rise. The Joestars are practically family!” The King gaffaws. Jotaro rises to his feet meeting the King’s gaze, and he mistakes the fury in Jotaro’s eyes for determination.
The King’s child has been receiving more threats as of late, according to confidential information, a group of revolutionaries are planning to stage an attack on the royal family, taking out the next heir before going for the king.
As they did their best to grow into a respectable ruler, one they believed had to be perfect to take over the throne, they slowly disappeared from the public eye, only appearing when necessary. Their studies and personal hobbies took up most of their time, causing them to become a hermit, and for wild rumors about them to spread. Half of the townspeople believed that they were with child, due to acts of adultery and the other half believed the heir was a child, despite being taught their birthdate in school.
If Jotaro had to be put into one of those categories, it would have to be the latter, while he is not foolish enough to believe the heir is an actual child, he does believe they must act like one, forever a bratty, foul mouthed royal.
One of the palace maids leads him to you, Jotaro irritably strides down the hall, his shoes clacking against the shining marble floors, the young maid leading him is nearly jogging to keep in front of him, twiddling with her hair from his presence. The palace has tall, open windows to let in lots of natural light, and the air from the sea. The soft breeze, and salty smell soothe Jotaro’s fouling mood, clearing his head and preparing him to meet who he believes is a nightmare reincarnated.
The maid stops in front of grand doors, knocking briskly, when she doesn’t receive a response, she knocks again. Jotaro steps forward and grabs the handle. “You’re not supposed to open the door without an answer-” Her protest gets caught in her throat as Jotaro looks down on her. “Quiet.” He huffs, and pulls the door open, the maid, not wanting to get in trouble, bids a quiet goodbye to Jotaro and quickly leaves to attend to other duties.
He steps into the quiet library, there are no windows and floor to ceiling, sprawling bookshelves stand before him, filled to the brim with books, the library stretches further back, the bookshelves twisting, so Jotaro cannot tell truly how large the library is. On the right there is a large open space, with a large fireplace, and many family paintings surrounding it, the most recent one being of the heir, just when they were still a baby, posing with the King and Queen. The entire floor area is covered by an intricate rug, and there are many sofas surrounding the fireplace. There, lying on a chaise lounge is the person Jotaro is tasked to protect, you.
He steps forward and sees that you are fast asleep, an open book laid across your chest as it rises and falls, the fireplace is on, illuminating your face. Jotaro hovers over you and fake coughs loudly into his hand, the first time you don’t stir, but when he does it the second time, your eyes blink open. You shoot up, clutching the book against your chest. You’re more embarrassed to be caught sleeping than scared at the new face of the stranger, your eyes sweep over his rebellious presentation, and strikingly handsome face. “Who are you?”
He continues to stare down at you, unbothered. “My name is Jotaro Kujo. I have been assigned as your personal guard, and I must remain with you consistently.” He recites stoically. “Where is your handmaiden?” He asks gruffly, his angry mood seeping through.
You frown at his tone, rising from your position on the couch, and straightening out your clothes. “I told him to let me be in the library.” You state simply.
He is quick to respond. “At least a simple maid would do good to be by your side, or someone to tend to the fire as you slept. Were you attempting to burn the library down with you inside it?” Jotaro internally scolds himself for getting out of line, but with all the threats you’ve gotten recently, someone should be with you at all times.
Your eyebrows raise, not used to being spoken to like this, it’s surprising but feels good. Your handmaiden, Noriaki Kakyoin, does his best to speak with you casually, but he still holds back from scolding you too hard, even if you deserve it. Jotaro’s bluntness is refreshing. “I was only going to read for a moment, but fell asleep.” You weakly try to defend yourself, you know being alone, especially now, was incredibly foolish, yet having a constant presence was starting to feel suffocating. As a child you were left alone often, and would only spend time with Kakyoin, who was the son of your handmaiden at the time. When he was busy working around the palace, you would be alone in the library, finding another book to read, or running around on the beach, getting into trouble, then your tutor and father would hunt you down, scolding you for not working on becoming a proper ruler. The way Jotaro is looking at you makes you feel like a child again, being scolded in the library for acting childish, despite that, you still enjoy everything you did as a child, continuing to get into trouble still.
“I spoke out of line, it won’t happen again your Highness.” Jotaro says gruffly, taking note of your dejected and tense attitude. He clears his throat, “I will be with you all the time, so you won’t have to worry about finding someone to stay with you.”
You wave him off, pushing away any negative emotions, and you put a smile on your face. “No need to apologize, your manner of speaking is… refreshing.” You bow gracefully to him, “I am thankful to have a head-strong knight such as yourself protect me from enemy threats.” He nods stiffly and awkwardly bows back, your smile grows at that, thinking his awkwardness is delightful. Jotaro assumes your smile is mocking, and he slightly grits his teeth, his annoyance growing, he lets it out with a strong, silent exhale.
You both straighten together, and you set down the book you’ve been holding, you can feel him watching carefully, and you shyly meet his gaze. “May we take a walk on the beach? We should understand each other better if we’ll be spending a lot of time together.” You suggest politely.
Jotaro nods in response, deciding he should keep his mouth shut for a while to avoid harsh comments, it’s not like he can say no either, he doesn’t understand why you would even pose it as a question. He follows you out of the library, opening the large doors for you, then silently trailing you down the hall.
The two of you walk down the beach, the sun lowering in the sky. You’ve taken off your shoes and let Jotaro know he could do the same, he silently refused. You’re walking in the shallow water, kicking your feet and splashing in the water from time to time, it’s completely undignified of someone of your status, but he’ll be seeing a lot worse if you’ll truly be spending 24/7 together.
You’re speaking quietly to him about something you like, you think he’s listening, because he responds with hums and grunts every so often, but you wouldn’t be surprised if he’s thinking of something else.
The both of you come upon a few tide pools situated on the far side of the beach, and you can practically see Jotaro light up. He’s significantly less tense, and genuinely excited to explore them if you allow him, having no idea that these were here before.
Without another word you begin climbing the rocks, “Come on Jotaro.” You speak casually to him, and usually it would throw him off, but he seems far too interested in the tide pools to care. He climbs up with you, keeping a careful gaze on your surroundings and standing close so you don’t slip on the rocks. “Do you like tide pools?” You ask him curiously. “Yes,” He pauses for a moment, “I’ve never seen one before.” He says in horribly disguised awe. You beam, feeling like taking a walk on the beach was the best decision you made to get to know this stranger.
The tides are still low enough that you can see life blooming in the pools, crabs skittering around, small fish, anemones, all vibrant and working hard for their next meal. You subtly glance over at Jotaro, and his focus is all on the tide pools now, his face is blank, but you can see the excitement shining in his eyes. You look back to the tide pools yourself. You spot a starfish and crouch down to grab it, wanting to show Jotaro since you can tell how fascinated he is by the tide pools, your fingers gently curl around its soft body. “Don’t!” Jotaro says worriedly, his hand firmly closes around your wrist, but it’s too late, you’ve already pulled the starfish out of the water. You gasp in shock at his grasp, nearly dropping the poor starfish. He gently takes it from your hand, and worriedly puts it back in the water. He’s watching the starfish, but clearly fuming, you’re not sure what you did wrong, but it clearly set him off.
“I-” You begin but cut yourself off as he turns towards you, his gaze is piercing, the excitement and wonder gone, now you’re sure if the rebels after you don’t kill you, Jotaro surely will.
The walk back to the palace is incredibly awkward, and much quicker, whereas before you walked at the leisurely pace, Jotaro is walking very fast across the beach, thinking of how foolish you are, more so than the court jester himself. He walks as if trying to leave you, despite knowing he would risk being executed if he actually attempted that.
Once you make it inside, Kakyoin is waiting for you and he raises an eyebrow at the obvious tension between you two. He comes to your side, leaning in close and trying to make sure you’re okay. You simply shake your head and he leads you back to your chambers as Jotaro awkwardly follows.
Kakyoin decides to hold the silence for your sake, no matter how awkward, he can dig into you a little when you’re alone.
He places his hand gently on your back, ushering you into your quarters, your bath already filled with steam rising from the water. “I saw you coming back from the beach and knew there would be sand and salt in your hair.” Kakyoin fusses over you, already trying to undress you, you pull back, embarrassed by his actions and looking over to Jotaro who is standing in the doorway, arms crossed over his chest, his eyes fixed away from you.
“Can you wait outside please?” You request of him, and he nods, briskly leaving.
Kakyoin gives you a look, and leads you into your bathroom, already asking a million questions.
“I ruined it. We just met and I already ruined it.” You admit quietly, soaking in the bath as he cleans you. “I took him to the tide pools and he was so excited, but they got incredibly upset at me when I grabbed a starfish.”
Kakyoin looks at your crestfallen expression. “You cannot ruin a relationship that hasn’t even started yet.” He reminded you. “There could be a reason as to why he freaked out, why don’t you speak to him? The joy of your relationship is that he cannot leave without your permission, that means you have endless opportunities to fix your mistakes.”
You sit there quietly, mulling over his words, you just need to apologize to him and everything should work itself out, maybe you could read about starfish too to correct your ignorance.
Kakyoin finishes washing you, he helps you dry off and get appropriately dressed. You’re wearing something flowy, it’s a deep blue, like the depths of the sea, and it’s always been one of your favorite outfits. You open the door to your chambers, nearly expecting Jotaro to not be there, yet he still looks down at you, an obvious tick in his brow, but he’s calmed down a lot since then. A few maids hover near him, clearly hoping for something Jotaro was not wanting to give, you send them off, giving them each tasks to do.
“May we go to the library?” You ask, and Jotaro has to turn away, the way you ask him clearly rhetorical questions is majorly annoying him. He has no say in what either of you do, and he just hopes that you’re kind enough to not mention what happened at the tide pools to your father. You still seem to be waiting for his response, patiently, and nervously watching him.
Looks like we’re doing this again.
You purse your lips and lead the way to the library, knowing he’ll follow you, you’re planning on finding as many books on starfish as you can to try and figure out what you did wrong.
There in the library you leave Jotaro at the fireplace, you know where each section is by heart, but you never paid much attention to the nonfiction section, always more interested in getting lost in a fantastical story. You comb through each book, when your eyes finally land on a book about starfish. You skim through the pages, and your heart drops when you read a paragraph a few pages in, “It is found that removing the animal from the water lead to carbon dioxide poisoning…” Your eyes read further down the page, “Subject died: 3 minutes, 22 seconds. Cause of death: Asphyxiation. Proceed…” Your heart quickly drops and you slam the book shut. You’re hoping that starfish you grabbed is alive and well, but now you understand why Jotaro was so panicked. You rush back over to the lounge area and Jotaro has his eyes on you, having been keeping an eye on you the entire time, his eyes flick to the book in your hands in curiosity. You stand over him, “I’m so sorry.” He raises an eyebrow in confusion but does not interrupt. “I had no idea how detrimental it was to grab them out of the water- I was a fool and I hope you can forgive me.” His eyes darken at the mention of the incident, but he takes a moment to mull over your words, Jotaro is surprised at your eagerness to learn and get better, this is nothing like how he thought royals were. “Thank you. For the apology and not staying blind.” He takes a moment. “Starfish might be my favorite. I have a book about them that my mother got me when I was young.” He shares honestly. You’re so happy at finally learning more about him, and thankful he won’t try to kill you in your sleep now.
Jotaro is starting to see you in a new light, while you made a stupid mistake of grabbing the starfish, you went out of your way to apologize to him and learn why he was so upset.
He was wrong to make assumptions about you and direct his anger your way.
In the morning you wake up to Kakyoin throwing open your curtains, you groan, having slept terribly last night. Your nerves around Jotaro were soothed after your apology and the talk you both had in the library, leading the both of you to learn more about each other; but during supper your father announced he would be throwing a ball for your 20th birthday, usually the townspeople celebrate without you and you enjoy time away from your duties. Though your father claims the ball will also be for the kingdom, and their neighbors, to lift spirits, and possibly find you a lover.
You protested this, believing it barbaric to marry a stranger, wanting to find love like the commoners do, yet your father simply brushed you off, saying it would do you good. He promised to invite only those he trusted to insure your safety would not be at risk, yet you knew the guest list would still be outrageously long.
Now, there was still a month to prepare for your birthday, yet the palace was rushing around already. You and Jotaro silently sat in each other’s company in the garden, you’re snacking on something as he looks away from you, watching the sea on the horizon. You glance at him from time to time, trying not to make your staring too obvious.
“You seem to enjoy the sea.” You hum.
His eyes pull from where he was staring to meet your gaze. “I do.” He agrees simply.
The both of you fall into comfortable silence once more, and it’s broken by a sharp bark at your feet. You quickly look down to see a Boston terrier, one you lovingly named Iggy, he waits impatiently at your feet to give him a treat. You pluck something from your plate and toss it to him.
“Don’t feed the mutt, he’ll only come back.” Jotaro scolds you gruffly.
“It’s too late for that my dear knight.” You watch Iggy as he quickly tears up what you gave him. “I named him Iggy, he always knows when I eat in the garden, and he’s grumpy just like you, maybe you’ll get along.” Your eyes twinkle with mischief as you meet his eyes, a smile pulling on your lips.
He rolls his eyes and looks away. “He probably stinks, just some foolish mutt, nearly as foolish as you.”
You huff and cross your arms over your chest, playfully jutting up your nose. “That’s no way to speak to the next Monarch.”
He raises his eyebrows. “You’re not the Monarch yet, I technically receive my orders from the King.”
Your lips pull into a frown. “I’m just trying to have some fun.”
He says nothing to that. In Jotaro’s head he’s confused, I thought I was being playful back? He watches you as you play with Iggy, cursing at himself for already feeling at ease with you, it’s been 2 days, but he wouldn’t say you’re friends, still strangers.
You would have to say Jotaro is one of your good friends, after spending a couple weeks together, you’ve grown quite close. Your days would start off with just the two of you enjoying breakfast together, by the time you eat your father is already with his court, before Jotaro just watched you eat, but you managed to convince him to eat breakfast with you, the maids now bringing out an extra platter for him. After breakfast, the both of you meet with your tutor and royal advisor, Muhammad Avdol, he’s been your advisor and tutor since you were little, and you love how knowledgeable he is. Once your lessons are done, you and Jotaro have lunch together, you sometimes have it in the garden where Iggy will sit and beg for scraps, but usually you enjoy lunch on the beach, enjoying each other’s company. Then, the two of you talk with each other in the library, originally it would just be you speaking at him, but he’s slowly started to open up and share more about himself. Once supper arrives, you part ways and meet again in the morning. Another trusted guard watches your door at night, ensuring no one visits you until Kakyoin wakes you up in the morning.
You usually kept the same routine, but this morning, 2 weeks before your birthday there is going to be a small festival welcoming those visiting for the ball. While your father told you that you must stay in the palace and greet the arriving guest, you knew as soon as your morning duties were done, you would sneak into town despite knowing Jotaro will strongly advise against it.
When you wake, you request Kakyoin dresses you in something nicer than usual, he assumes nothing, knowing you already have to dress up fancier for the guests arriving.
Jotaro meets you outside your chambers as per usual and pauses for a brief moment when he notices your outfit. “You’ve never worn that before.”
You smile sweetly. “It’s just for the guests arriving today.” You say smoothly, it’s not exactly a lie, but it feels like you’ve already done something wrong when the words pass your lips. Never mind that, you’re planning on sneaking into the town with Jotaro anyway, so you know he’ll keep you safe.
During breakfast and your studies, you’re noticeably quieter than usual, Jotaro doesn’t comment on it, but watches you suspiciously the entire time. When it’s time for your lunch together, he finally realizes why you’ve been acting off.
“No.” He shuts you down quickly.
“I just asked if we could have lunch in the town today…” You wring your hands together awkwardly.
“You have to stay in the palace today, it’s the will of your father.” You frown at his response, draping yourself dramatically over him, and he tenses, eyes warily locked on your movements.
“Please? I’ll give you a raise!” You promise him hopefully. To Jotaro he wouldn’t complain about being paid more, but he can’t just let you do whatever you want.
You huff, squeezing him tighter, and putting on your best puppy eyes you ask him once more. “Please?” He gulps slightly and quickly looks away from you, clenching his jaw. When he looks back and sees the hope shining in your eyes he sighs. “One hour.” He relents, “Just get off of me.” He grumbles and you quickly pull back before he can take it back. You thank him repeatedly and sing his praises even as you both leave the palace grounds.
You didn’t have to sneak out with Jotaro at your side, being a person of your status had its perks, and your father had thankfully neglected to inform the entire staff that you weren’t allowed to leave. Had the royal officer, Jean Pierre Polnareff, been in the front when you left, he would have informed your father promptly and had you trapped in the palace until you were married.
The town square was decorated in blues to honor the sea, and there were many stalls set up, each filled with unique products and foods. You drag Jotaro around, pointing out things at the stalls, offering to get him something. His lips upturn every time you do this, and seeing his smile is making you want to spoil him with your riches.
Your eyes land on a stall selling sea shell bracelets, and you drag Jotaro over to it. “Jotaro let me buy you this.” You grab a bracelet excitedly, he refuses once more.
“Those should have been left on the beach, a crab could have had that as a new home-” He huffs and you ignore him, turning to the sweet stall owner.
“Pardon me ma’am, how much for this bracelet?” She recognizes you and gives you a smile, pushing your money away. “Please take it! I would be honored to have you wear my jewelry!” You reluctantly put your money away and take the bracelet, thanking her genuinely. You turn to Jotaro and slip it on his wrist before he can protest, the stall owner’s eye twitches when she realizes you weren’t going to be the one flaunting her jewelry, but says nothing as you and Jotaro wander off.
The crowd has grown since you arrived and Jotaro moves closer to you. You crash into a solid body, and his hands steady you before Jotaro can reach out for you. His laugh sounds deeply as he looks down at you. “Be careful where you’re scampering off to, little rabbit.” He speaks in a different accent, and you awkwardly meet his gaze, weirded out a bit by the petname. The man holding you in place is dressed in all yellow, it’s a clearly expensive outfit, you have reason to believe he must be a royal like yourself. He is clearly a bit older than you and has striking blonde hair, his lips are pulled into a cunning grin. He steps back and bows to you, taking your hand into his own. “I apologize, I didn’t realize I was in the presence of our next monarch.” He pulls your wrist up to his lips and presses a soft kiss to your pulse point, his eyes meeting yours once more. You understand why he must have called you a ‘little rabbit’ now, he stares at you with the hunger of a starved wolf that stumbled upon a tasty rabbit. You can feel Jotaro’s presence right behind you, and it makes you feel a lot safer. The man straightens, but doesn’t let go of your wrist, rolling it back and forth absentmindedly between his pointer and thumb. “My name is Dio Brando, I am the Lord of land Veil and I’ve come for your birthday, your majesty.”
Jotaro finally takes your hand back from Dio, holding it gently before quickly releasing it. Dio takes note of this, and the bracelet Jotaro is wearing, his sharp eyes accessing him before turning his attention back to you. “You really shouldn’t be in town during such a busy time, something disastrous could happen to you.” He purrs.
“We were just leaving.” Jotaro cuts in sternly, and Dio raises an eyebrow at this. “Let me join you then.”
Jotaro clenches his jaw and glances down at you. “We-” You cut him off softly, “There’s no need, there should be someone to escort you if you get lost.” You tell Dio nervously, and only smiles wider. “Please, I insist. Besides, it would be a great honor to be shown around the palace by you.” You slowly begin to nod your head, realizing that you really shouldn’t say no.
“Very well.” You fold your arms across your chest, and lead the way back. Jotaro and Dio fall behind you, steps perfectly in sync as they size each other up.
The walk back to the palace is filled with awkward silence that no one dares to break, when you finally make it to the steps you turn to face the both of them. You politely bow your head to Dio, “Your stay is most welcome sir, please excuse my knight and I, I am needed in my study hall.” You lie elegantly, and bid him a goodbye, handing him off to a maid you deemed brave enough to give him a tour of the palace. You take off without looking at Jotaro, already knowing he’ll be following you.
You enter the library flopping against the sofa with a groan. “What a weirdo, thank you for trying to get us away.” Jotaro hums in agreement, sitting across from you, he’s glad you weren’t charmed by Dio Brando, he knows something is off with him, but isn’t sure what it is yet. He’ll just keep a close eye on him and make sure he doesn’t try to pull anything with you. He fiddles with the bracelet you got him as you warmly fill the space like you always do. At first Jotaro almost found your ramblings annoying, but he’s started to appreciate them, in the past there would constantly be awkward silence, and while Jotaro enjoys his quiet, people would fill the silence with ridiculous ramblings in hopes of impressing him. Women would cling to him and beg for his attention, but he didn’t mind it much when you were pleading with him to go to the town. When you speak it’s usually insightful, and he learns something new, it’s obvious you’ve read a lot of the books in your large library and use the pages to your advantage. You always seem to know when Jotaro needs his silence too, letting your sentence drift away from you as you open another book to read with him, sometimes reading to him, or just letting the quiet of the library settle around you both. This time you read quietly, eyes slowly fluttering shut, you fight against it, but you’re deeply tired from the events of the day, your fight against sleep is in vain, as you quickly slump against the sofa, book dangling from your hand.
Jotaro watches you as you sleep, it’s not creepy, it’s just his job to make sure you’re safe, even when sleeping. He waits for a while, making sure you’re actually sleeping peacefully before pulling the book from your hands, he puts a bookmark inside and sets it on the table. He sits in the same spot as before.
He’s just going to watch you.
It’s not creepy, it’s just his job.
Maybe he could get you a blanket?
For your safety of course, he can’t have you getting sick.
He decides to leave it be for now, and just watches you sleep peacefully. He knows he’ll have to wake you soon for supper, but for now he’ll enjoy seeing you so untroubled.
He watches the clock, letting you sleep until the last possible second, when the time for supper comes around he stands from his spot and gets ready to wake you. The thought of waking you sent Jotaro’s gut twisting, but he wasn’t sure why.
He carefully crouches over you, placing his large hand on your shoulder and shaking you gently. “It’s time for your dinner.” He steps away when you begin to blink awake, you sit up on the couch, freshening yourself up the best you can.
He walks with you all the way to the dining hall, “Why don’t you join us for supper?” You suggest, hating to see him go at this time every night, it’s always just you and your father, only talking business. It would be improper of him, but you hope your father will look past it if he says yes.
You sleepily peer up at him, “So it’ll be eventually.” You enter the dining hall, leaving him standing alone in the hall. He’s flustered, opening and closing his fists before taking off towards the knight’s shared quarters. You greet your father, sitting across from him at your grand table, the dinner buffet already set out for the both of you.
Your established schedule with Jotaro continues the next day, now the only difference is that Lord Dio joins the both of you for every activity outside your studying. The both of you attempted to run off, or change your schedule up, but he always seemed to know where you ran off to, your once safe space that was the library has been overthrown by Dio, who decided that it needed a few horrendous fur rugs and blankets. When the both of you visited the tide pools, with Dio taking up your side before Jotaro could, he proclaimed that a beachy golf course would look perfect on top of the rocks. Then, you and Jotaro decided to eat in the garden like you always do with Iggy, unsurprisingly Dio showed up and stepped on Iggy, claiming he couldn’t see the little mutt. You gasped at that and grabbed Iggy, who let you man handle him a bit and even stayed in your lap, his fur bristling at Dio’s presence. Of course during supper Dio sat next to you at the long table. You begged and pleaded with Jotaro to join you for dinner, so it wouldn’t be just you, Dio and your father, yet he had to refuse. Jotaro’s heart yearned to give into your pleas, he already took too much of a risk letting you go into the town square when you weren’t supposed to.
Without fail, every night after dinner Dio walks you back to your chambers, leaving a kiss against your pulse point and calling you ‘his little rabbit,’ just like when you first met. You don’t tell Jotaro about this, you don’t want to worry him, and while Dio is off-putting he hasn’t technically done anything but be an annoying presence, and step on Iggy, but you can’t prove that it wasn’t an accident. For now, you were going to keep a careful eye on him, and wait til he slips up and reveals his true colors.
Today, you and Jotaro got lucky, Dio was needed in town for his own personal reasons and the both of you decided to spend your entire afternoon chatting in the garden. Iggy was very happy to lounge in the sun without the presence of Dio, and helped himself to a large portion of your snacks.
“I would like to play a game with you.” You suggest, and Jotaro peers over at you from over his book, raising a curious eyebrow. You lean across the table. “It’s a game I’ve heard the common folk play, Mouthy lies.”
He furrows his eyebrows, having not heard that one before, despite playing in the town a lot as a kid. “You state 3 statements, two being truthful and one being a lie, the other must guess the lie.” He sets his book down, realizing what game you’re talking about now. “It’s called Mouth of Truth your majesty.” He teases you smoothly. “Yes that one! Play with me please Jotaro, using personal statements only.”
He leans back in his chair, “Very well, would you like to start?” You place your head in your hand, trying to think of a few statements. “I have never been outside Eridia, I have an older sibling and I have stolen once.” You are happy with your choices, believing he won’t be able to guess the lie, he makes his guess immediately, “You’ve never stolen.” He claims confidently.
“How did you know?” You’re surprised at how confidently and accurately he guessed. “I know you’d never steal, you’ve got unlimited riches and power at your finger tips and you paused before your last statement. I didn’t know you had a sibling.” You huff and mimic his laid back form, leaning back into your seat. “I’m irritated at how easy I was able to read, but yes, I have an older brother, he rules over the territory my father was born in. It’s much smaller than Eridia, and since he’s the oldest, my father found that it would be best to give him that power. I’m still known as the true heir since he had a child out of wedlock. It's sad really, I can tell they love each other so much and they’re married now, but having a bastard child was unacceptable in my father’s eyes.” You physically wave the thought away, a heavy sigh escaping you. “Please, it’s your turn now.”
He pauses for a moment, thinking of a good set of statements. “I had an imaginary friend as a child, I have 2 siblings and I want to become a scholar and study the sea.” You grin and confidently claim, “The second one is a lie!” He grins softly, showing off his teeth, he ducks his head shyly, and the way he’s acting is making your heart palpitate. “You’re right, I’m an only child.” You watch him curiously, “Would you tell me more about your parents?” Your curiosity in getting to know Jotaro better always feels all consuming. Jotaro is not surprised by your curiosity anymore, and is happy to indulge you. “My father is an imperial knight, he has always traveled a lot for the constant crusades, he loves music and my mother. My mother, she’s sweet and gentle, she’s so kind too, but she’s been sick on and off since I was 17, it’s been 4 years but I know she will get better, we just haven’t tried everything yet.” His fists clench harshly as he talks about his family, he cares deeply for them, but is irritated by his fathers absence and his mother’s sickness. You slowly grasp one of his closed fists, holding his hand gently, in hopes it will soothe his worries. His fists unfurl, and he gently strokes the back of your hand with his thumb; but his brain is still abuzz thinking of his mother, and how he hasn’t gotten the chance to see her since he started working directly for you. “Why don’t you take the day off to see her?” You suggest.
His thumb pauses in his ministrations, “Who would keep you out of trouble?” He teases you and you roll your eyes playfully, “I’m serious Jotaro.” You soften your tone, “Go see your mother, I’ll be safe with Polnareff, you know how much he cares about people’s safety.” Jotaro huffs, “He’s just not the most brilliant, I want to make sure you’re truly safe.” He squeezes your hand. “He’s the imperial guard, and he has put his line on the line for me before. Your mother is missing you, I’m sure you’re missing her too and you’re not going to miss me while you’re gone.”
I would. The words don’t leave his lips and instead he nods. You smile at him, “Great! We can plan it for the next few days, or even tomorrow!” You gently pull away from him and stand from the table, leaning down to scratch Iggy’s head. “Let’s go talk to my father!” You turn and walk off, he sighs in disbelief and stands to follow you.
Walking quickly down the hall, you speak of how delighted you’d be to meet his mom, further inviting her to the ball if she feels well enough. You enter your father’s study without knocking, Jotaro following close behind you. “Father I must ask you something-” You cut yourself off as you see Dio sitting directly next to him at his desk, smirking at you. The both of them are leaning over a book, and a mess of papers covering his desk. “I apologize, I assumed you were alone.”
Your father smiles brightly, “No worries, we were simply discussing boring political matters. What can we help with?” You raise a confused eyebrow at his usage of ‘we,’ a dreadful feeling settling in your gut. You clear your throat, you try to further understand the situation between the two, yet fall short in finding an explanation, “I hope these matters can be discussed between you and I, father.” He shuts the book on his desk, “Very well, Dio if you don’t mind-” The mentioned man is already slinking towards the door, “It’s no problem at all your Highness.” He purrs, brushing against you as he walks past. Jotaro stiffens, stepping closer to you, Dio’s eyes glint in delight as he sees Jotaro’s reaction, but he leaves without another word. You step towards your father’s desk, “It involves Jotaro so I hope you don’t mind him staying.”
Your father pushes his chair back from his desk, and you step closer to him. “I believe Jotaro would do well to have a vacation, just for a few days before the ball.” He leans back in his chair as Jotaro hovers behind you. “And whose idea was this?” Your father questions, Jotaro goes to speak but you hold a hand up, silencing him. “It was my own suggestion, his mother is sick and I want him to go spend time with her, he refused-” “As he should have-” You father cuts in, yet you continue, “But Polnareff can be assigned as my private guard, I trust him whole heartily and I know you do as well. It can just be a short trip.” Your father agrees, clasping his hands atop his desk. “Very well, I will approve a two day trip, come a few days to give our royal officer time to clear his schedule.”
You smile brightly and turn to Jotaro. “You get to go see your mother.” He nods his head, less nervous than before. “Thank you.” He bows to your father, “I will make haste of my visit.” You go to leave your father’s study, but he calls out to you, “I would like to discuss something brief with you, alone.” Jotaro understands the king’s message and bows his head once more, as he leaves he watches you with a gentle look, being able to tell you’re nervous at what your father may say. Your hand itches to brush against his own as he walks past, you pull your fingers into a fist to stop yourself. The door shuts behind him, “Come closer my child.” Your father beckons you to come towards his desk. You walk over, taking a delicate seat at the chair in front of his desk, crossing one leg over the other. He smiles softly at you. “You know you can be honest with me right?” You quietly nod your head, confused by his question. “What do you think of Lord Dio?” You shift uncomfortably in your seat. “I’m sorry I don’t think I understand Father.” He lets out a silent sigh, “It’s a simple question child, how do you feel about Dio?” you clasp your hands together, how do you feel about Dio? He’s a slimy, pompous creep, a disgusting little- “I think he’s insistant.”
“Insistant? Don’t you think he’s charming, handsome?” You clench your teeth, what exactly is your father trying to insinuate? You clear your throat, “I- suppose he could be those things, I’ve only spoken to him a few times.” Your father hums, “He’s told me about all the time you’ve spent together, you have lunch in the garden, and spend time with him in the library-” Those are all things you do with Jotaro, and Dio likes to force himself into those times, now he’s telling your father that those are intimate moments you shared? Your blood is boiling as the voice of your father fades into the background, you wish to strike Dio across the face as hard as you possibly can. Maybe you can provoke him so he tries to attack you, then Jotaro could pummel his face in, or you could ask Jotaro to accidently trip him into the rose bushes when he inevitably stalks you in the garden. Your fathers voice slowly starts to fade back in as you take steady breaths, willing yourself to calm down. “I think you should give him a chance.” Your father requests.
“Why?” You can’t help but snap, frustrated with what your father is alluding to. He sighs, standing from his chair, “We’ll continue this discussion later, it will do you well to get closer to Dio.” You clench your teeth and stand from your chair as well, storming off without another word.
Jotaro is waiting for you outside, and reaches for you as you speed off, mumbling angrily to yourself. He takes long strides to keep up with you, staying a silent, steady presence beside you as you storm down the hall with no direction in mind.
You find yourself on the beach, soft sand squishing underneath your shoes and a breeze from the sea washes over your skin, Jotaro is still following behind you, ready to protect all of you, like he promised he would. You press your palms into your eyes, letting yourself fall into the sand, Jotaro is quick to grab onto you, gently helping you lower to the ground. “I don’t understand- that lying bastard is charming my father and I don’t understand why. My father wants me to get closer to him, but I’d rather stab myself through the heart.” You snivel. Jotaro presses a firm hand to your back, gently rubbing up and down. You look up at him with pitiful eyes, “What’s his problem? Can’t he see I have no interest in him?” You lean into Jotaro more. “I’d rather spend time with you anyway, you’re the only person who really sees me Jotaro.” His hand freezes for just a split second, but you still notice it, glancing up at him. He has a flustered look on his face, but he’s good at playing it off, it makes you smile, you’re very happy to know the effect you have on him.
“I would say the same thing about you, you’ve surprised me, your highness, and I- feel comfortable around you.” It’s your turn to feel flustered now, you beam at him, turning to face him. You let yourself fully drink in his soft expression, nervously placing a hand on his cheek, he leans into your touch and your smile grows bigger.
Your eyes flicker to his lips, “You remind me of an octopus, very intelligent, adaptable, curious, you’ve only gotten sweeter and clingier the more I get closer to you, you have your suckers molded to my heart Jotaro Kujo. Please can I-?” You lean in closer, he smiles, truly smiles, the corners of his mouth pull to his cheeks and his pearly teeth are on display, he lets out an unreserved chuckle. “Good grief, you’re so unpredictable, you’re like the Crown of Thorns Starfish, so beautiful and then I’ve already been poisoned by your love before I can realize it.” Your breath mixes together and you nudge your nose against his own, your arms wrap around his shoulders. “You’re such a fool.” His eyebrows raise, pulling you in close, “I’ll be your fool, I’ll be your protector, I’ll be anything you want your highness.” You snort at his response, surprised at this endearing, different side of him, “What I want is for you to kiss me already my knight.” He doesn’t waste another second and moves in to kiss you, just as your lips are millimeters away, you hear a stern cough above you.
Jotaro pulls back from you quickly, letting you support yourself on the ground. Dio stands above the two of you, a sinister grin on his lips. “Oh? I hope I’m not interrupting something.” He drawls smoothly, plucking a grain of sand off his coat and flicking it away in annoyance. Jotaro holds out his hand to you and you quickly stand with his help, “It was nothing.” You snap at him, disappointed at not being able to kiss Jotaro, but even more annoyed to see Dio was the one who interrupted you, explaining everything to your father would have been easier than this. “Is there something I can help you with Dio?”
He glides in close, and Jotaro protectively steps in between, “You just have a piece of sand on your shoulder, your highness.” Dio slides past Jotaro and pucks the grain from your shirt, you recoil in disgust. “If that’s all you need, we'll be on our way.” You move to walk away and Dio grabs your forearm tightly, before you can even blink Jotaro is roughly pulling him away, he firmly plants himself between you and Dio as he stumbles back. Dio is surprised by Jotaro’s harshness and is very angry at how he was treated. He spits out at you scornfully, “I know what the two of you are doing, fooling around, a dirty pig and a spoiled royal- whoring yourself out for him are you? What a little bitch you are-” He’s cut off as Jotaro strikes him in the face, as he moves to hit him again you cut in, “That’s enough for now.” You grab his forearm and drag him away from Dio who’s squirming on the ground like a maggot, clutching his face and spewing curses as you quickly walk off.
You’re standing in front of your chambers when you finally let go of his arm. “Why would you do that?” Jotaro is hurt by your words and his gaze hardens. “You mean protect you? What I was ordered to do? I wasn’t going to just let him speak to you like that.” You sigh, turning away from him, you wish you weren’t so upset, you know it’s his job but Dio has a lot of power over your father. “I don’t want him to hurt you, he's a lord and you’re-” “I’m what?” He snaps, assuming you’ll say he’s lesser just because he’s poor. “You’re important to me Jotaro.” You whisper, still turned away from him, “I don’t have a lot of power yet, my father controls a lot of what I do. I don’t know if I’ll be able to protect you if he tries something.” He sighs and gets down on one knee, you look over at him, flustered. “You’re important to me too, and that’s why I want to protect you. I swore to your father I would protect you and I promise you that I will keep you safe. No matter what happens, you are my priority. No harm, physical or mental, will befall you in my care. I swear it on my mother’s life.” You feel incredibly flattered and determined, “Get up you buffoon.” You swat at him feeling more flushed, “We need to discuss a plan.”
You know there’s a lot to figure out when you both settle into your personal study, but the two of you work hard through the late afternoon. You both decided Jotaro would visit his mother still, but shorten it to just a day. He pushed back against this, not trusting you would be safe without him, but you reassured him of Polnareff’s skill, and he reluctantly gave in. You decided that tomorrow morning you would speak to your father about what Dio said and attempt to convince him he’s being manipulated. If that doesn’t work, you’ll spend more time trying to get Dio away from your father, and openly express your hatred of Dio in front of your father. If all else fails, you’ll ask for help from Avdol, who will be able to negotiate with your father in a more diplomatic sense.
With your plans established, the two of you part ways, he lingers beside you as long as possible until you disappear into your chambers till the morning.
The next morning as soon as the two of you meet up your plans fall into motion. First speak with Polnareff, who is more than willing to be extra protection and keep an eye on Dio. Then, it’s time for you to speak with your father, who up until this point has been singing Dio’s praises. You just hope he’ll listen to his only child over a man that he’s only formally met a few weeks ago.
“Father.” You enter his study, shutting the door behind you nervously, “Please listen to what I am about to say and don’t interrupt me until I am done.” Your father raises a curious brow, setting aside his diplomatic paperwork and giving you his full attention. “Very well my child, tell me what bothers you.” “It’s Dio.” You sigh noisily. “He’s been nothing but terrible you have to believe me, he’s said I’m a whore, he’s been nothing but rude and demanding. If you make me marry him I’ll string myself over the battlements.”
Your father huffs in disbelief, standing from his chair to intimidate you. “I will not have you speak so rudely of a guest, leave my study at once child.” You storm off in disbelief running into Polnareff and Jotaro the second you leave. “It didn’t work.” Your emotions feel like a boiling pot of water, nearly spilling over at this point, the things Dio has said and done to you are unacceptable, and yet it feels like there is nothing to be done. Jotaro places a steady hand on your arm, bringing your anger back down. “I’ll protect you, we’ll figure this out together.” He asserts. Polnareff agrees and leaves the two of you alone to find Avdol.
You begin to walk down the hall, Jotaro a silent presence following behind you. “You’re going to see your mother tomorrow, are you elated Jotaro?” You hum curiously, already assuming he’d be happy to see her and have a break after having to follow you around for weeks.
“I’m worried about you.” His statement interrupts your thoughts and you simply sigh in response. What can you say? Ask him not to go? It’s only a day and it’d be selfish to want him to stay just to protect you. You could easily command him to do anything you wanted, you were heir to the throne afterall, but just the thought of that twists your stomach and makes you feel sick, you could never command him to do anything.
The day draws to a close with no success from Advol’s conversation with your father, his is more a stubborn man than he’ll ever be your father, if he’s got his heart set on something you’ll have to do something drastic to change his mind. You skipped dinner unable to face your father much to Jotaro’s disappointment, he was more so worried about you not eating and snuck pieces of bread to you in your chambers. “Thank you Jotaro.” You whispered as he brought you bread and kissed his cheek, you drew so much delight from his face turning bright red and knew you would miss him tomorrow.
In the morning you awake to chaos, the ball is finally around the corner and with more guests arriving, Kakyoin wants to make sure you are fitting for your outfit for the ball sooner rather than later. You’re swept into preparations and fittings all day long while Polnareff desperately tries to keep up with you, Dio lingers the entire time and Kakyoin does more to defend you than Polnareff does, constantly giving Dio passive aggressiveness and just blatantly kicking him out of your fittings, he truly has no reason to be there. All day all you can think about is Jotaro and hoping he’s having a good time with his mother. Little did you know how much he was thinking of you too, talking all about you to his mother unintentionally, and biting his nails over not being at the palace to make sure you are safe from Dio.
When you finally see Jotaro arrive from his journey the next afternoon you jump into his arms. “Did you really miss me that much, your highness?” He teases you, holding you up as you cling to him. “You really should let go before someone sees though.” He hums anxiously. “No thanks.” You mumble against his chest and take your time before fully pulling away.
You drag him down the hall to the library to spend some time catching up, yesterday was too much for you and it truly felt like ages since you’d last seen him. You spend time catching up in the library and he tells you about how his mother loves you already. You tell him about how your fitting went and Dio’s hovering, which causes a tick in his brow that disappears when you point it out with a laugh.
It’s been a couple of days and it’s finally the night of the ball. There has been so much chaos with everyone running around and making last minute preparations for the ball. It’s been talked about in the village since the announcement was made, and this time the ball will be bigger than ever, with the entire village being invited. You’re just thankful that the village isn’t too big and the ballroom can handle that many people at once.
You’re swept into the preparations, Kakyoin fusses over you and your appearance for hours, making sure you look like a true royal. You’ve finally finished getting ready half an hour before the ball officially starts. Stepping out of your chambers, Jotaro is waiting for you. His breath catches as he takes in your appearance, and he holds out a hand for you. He’s looking at you like you’ve hung the stars in the sky, “You look-” He starts and you laugh at his dazed look. “Yeah?” You tease him and he snorts lightly. “Nothing.”
Your grin widens at the flush of his face, “I look like nothing?” He rolls his eyes silently and leads you down the hall, hand in hand. A servant comes down the hall and the both of you quickly pull away from each other awkwardly. You walk in silence towards the ballroom, a heaviness is in the air tonight, like something is about to happen. You entire the ballroom without Jotaro, he’s stationed by the throne, ordered to watch you from a distance. Your arrival is announced to the guests and they all cheer as you sit on the throne beside your father. Your father says a few words, thanking everyone for coming, and the festivities begin.
A man from the village shyly comes up to you and asks for your hand in a dance. You politely agree, after a glance to Jotaro who has a shadow fallen over his face, glaring at the man. The man walks with you down the steps as Jotaro stays besides your father, he makes kind conversation with you as the both of you dance, and lets you go once the song comes to a close.
You’re unexpectedly swept into another dance, further away from Jotaro. “Hello, your highness.” Dio looks down at you with contempt in his face, and a devilish grin, like he’s planning something you have no idea about.
Dio smiles wickedly as the music comes to a close, leaning in far too close, “You had a chance to be safe, I could have just killed your father and married you.” Your heart drops out of your chest as you take a step back. He continues without a bat of an eye, stepping close once more. “Yet you wanted your personal knight, wanted to mix royal and peasant blood. It’s revolting just to think about. So, now that I have you alone, I’ll just take care of you now.” Dio pulls something out of his coat pocket and it glints in the light of the chandelier. Your breath catches.
You try to swivel out of the way but it’s too late, the knife slides straight into your stomach, you hear a shout from somewhere as Dio is dragged off of you but it’s distant. The pain is blinding and it feels like you're underwater, nothing makes sense and you can barely breath. Dark spots cloud your vision and you feel so tired and cold. Someone picks you up with a jolt and it causes a lodged cry to finally rip from your throat. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry please.” It’s Jotaro.
He has tears in his eyes, blaming himself for letting Dio sweep you into that dance. Your eyes focus on him and your heart hurts more than your stomach when you see the tears running down his face. With all your strength you cup his cheek with one hand, gently wiping the tears away, “Please don’t cry.” You manage to whimper out. He shakes his head and he’s running down the hall towards the infirmary, he couldn’t care less about if Dio is captured right now, he just has to make sure you’re okay. “It hurts.” You groan and his heart clenches, he holds you closer.
“You’re okay, you’re going to be okay.” He repeats it like a mantra. Your grip grows weaker on your cheek as the blood loss starts to get to you. “Kiss me.” You beg him quietly, and he shakes his head.
His running slows and he hesitates but gently kisses you, it’s not as special as you’ve imagined for your first kiss, it was short and sweet, gentle just like Jotaro is and extra careful. It makes your heart pound as you realize how he's looking at you with so much love in his eyes, it terrifies you, more than Dio, more than becoming the next ruler of Eridia, and more than the blood loss that’s threatening to claim your life currently. “I demand a proper kiss next time.” You slur out as your ears start to ring and your vision goes fully black.
You wake slowly, still dazed from your blood loss, something is weighing down your right arm and you peel open your eyes to see Jotaro sitting at your bedside. He hasn’t noticed you’ve woken up yet, and you try to say something, yet all that comes out is a weak croak. He goes to get a nurse and you quickly grab him, and he gets pulled nearly on top of you.
“Please stay.” You rasp, bunching his shirt up in your hands. He nervously leans over you, caging you against the bed, his eyes flick to the doors of the infirmary, your lips, then your eyes, unable to focus on one thing. You swallow and without thinking you grab his face, “You’re so nervous, don’t I get my proper kiss?” You whisper, leaning in closer. His tongue darts out, wetting his lips, “Yeah-” You cut him off, lips slotting against his own. His hands move to your hips and he’s pulling you in close, eagerly kissing you back. He pulls back before you, and your lips follow, a low whine building in the back of your throat at his distance. “Jotaro.” You mewl, leaning in again. His eyes are locked on your eyes and his lips are part, as if he’s ready to say no, to turn back from you.
“You-” You cut him off with another passionate kiss, but he pulls away fast this time. He gently pushes you back against the bed, “I don’t want to hurt you.”
“You could never hurt me.” You whisper. He leans in and kisses you once more.
“My octopus.” You brush a finger along his cheek.
“My starfish.” He hums, squeezing your hand tightly.
Epilogue - a few months later
After the panic at the ball, Dio was immediately apprehended and banished from the land of Eridia for 100 years. Jotaro wanted him to be executed, but Dio managed to charm his way out of that punishment.
After healing from your wounds, you and Jotaro got even closer without anyone suspecting anything except Kakyoin, Polnareff and Avdol, but they were sworn to secrecy on a royal order directly from you.
You moved Holly to a better infirmary, and she’s been getting better by the day. She met you and said you were just like her own child.
You also encouraged Jotaro to begin studying marine life more, and he was offered an opportunity to travel the seas for more research. He pushed back against this, wanting to stay in Eridia and study with you, but you managed to convince him, on one condition.
oh my god, this was 4 months in the making and I truly hope you enjoyed it, the ending was a bit rushed and please let me know if you spot any mistakes !
