"If we remove Costa first without fixing the gap, someone else moves into it within a month."

"If we fix the gap first without addressing Costa, he has a month to keep skimming while we're busy with infrastructure."

Bruno considered this. You watched him consider it, which was a thing you had started doing without entirely deciding to, watching the specific way his attention settled on a problem, focused and unhurried, like he had complete confidence that careful thought would eventually produce the right answer if he gave it enough room.

"Both," he said. "Costa gets the warning today. The structural fix starts tomorrow. We don't wait for one to finish before starting the other."

He hummed when he was working through something difficult, quiet enough that you weren't sure he knew he did it. You noticed it first while he was reviewing intelligence reports at the temporary office, a low tuneless thread of sound that stopped the moment he became aware of the silence around it.

He had a way of going still when something mattered to him that was different from his usual composure, a stillness with weight to it rather than calm. You saw it once when Narancia called in injured on a minor job, nothing serious, but Bruno's whole body had gone taut for the three seconds it took to get confirmation that it was nothing serious, and then released, and he'd gone back to what he was doing like nothing had happened.

You filed all of this without examining why you were filing it.

He, for his part, seemed to be doing something similar with you, though he was considerably better at not letting it show. You caught him watching you work once, the specific focus you brought to fast decisions, and when you met his eyes he didn't look away immediately the way people usually did when caught observing someone. He just held it for a second, like he was finishing a thought, and then returned to what he'd been doing.

"You don't second-guess yourself," he said, once, while you were both reviewing a map of the territory. "Once you've decided something."

"Is that an observation or a complaint?"

"An observation," he said. "I find it useful to predict. Most people leave room for doubt that changes their behavior mid-action. You don't."

"Is that good or bad?"

He thought about it with the same seriousness he brought to everything. "Both, probably. But it's rare. I find it easier to plan around."

You weren't sure what to do with being told you were easy to plan around, by a man who had spent a year insisting your decisions were too fast to be reliable. You decided not to examine it.

The shift that actually mattered happened on a night neither of you had planned for, four and a half weeks into the joint assignment, during a surveillance operation that should have taken two hours and ran to six because the target didn't move when the intelligence said he would.

It was just the two of you in the car. Your squads were positioned elsewhere, covering a wider perimeter, and the surveillance itself only required two sets of eyes on a single building entrance, which meant you and Bruno had ended up sharing a parked car on a quiet street with nothing to do but wait and occasionally update comms.

The first two hours passed in the kind of conversation you'd had a hundred times before, operational and clipped, filling silence with logistics. Around hour three, with the target still not moving and comms confirming nothing new, the conversation started drifting somewhere else, the way conversations do when there's genuinely nothing else to occupy the space.

"You're from here," you said, at some point. Not quite a question.

"Naples," he said. "Most of my life."

"You like it?"

It wasn't really a question either, more an observation dressed as one, because it was visible in nearly everything about how he operated, the specific care he took with the city's geography, the way he talked about territory like it was something more than tactical ground.

He looked out the windshield at the dark street for a moment before answering, like he was deciding how much of an answer the question actually deserved.

"It's the only reason I have a line of work," he said, and didn't elaborate, and you didn't push, because something in the way he said it told you this was close to a door he wasn't going to open tonight, and you'd learned enough about him by now to recognize the shape of his doors.

The silence afterward wasn't uncomfortable. That was new, you realized. A year ago a silence like that would have had an edge to it, something unresolved sitting in the space between you. This one just sat there, easy, while you both watched a building that wasn't doing anything interesting.

"My turn," he said, eventually. "Why this line of work, for you?"

You thought about how to answer that honestly without answering it completely, which was a balance you'd gotten good at over the years and that felt, for the first time in a long time, slightly insufficient.

"Control," you said. "I grew up somewhere that didn't have much of it. This is a line of work where you can build it for yourself, if you're good enough."

"Iron Maiden," he said. "That's what it does. Controls force that wants to be chaotic."

"You've thought about that?"

"I think about most things," he said, which wasn't exactly a complete answer.

"And what do you think," you asked, "when you think about it."

He was quiet for a moment. You watched the side of his face, the careful stillness of him, lit faintly by a streetlamp half a block down.

"I think it explains you," he said. "More than I expected it to."

"That's not what I asked."

"I know," he said. "That's what I'm willing to answer tonight."

You let that sit. It felt, somehow, like more than if he'd said something more direct, the careful honesty of someone telling you exactly how much truth you were getting and trusting you to respect the boundary of it.

"Fair," you mumbled.

The target finally moved around hour five and a half, and the operation wrapped without incident, and you drove back to the temporary base in a silence that had a different texture than any silence you'd shared with him before.

The breaking point, when it came, was smaller than either of you would have predicted, which was, you'd reflect on later, exactly how these things tended to go.

It was the final week of the joint assignment, a wrap-up meeting to consolidate everything into a joint report for the don, the two of you alone in the temporary office with the late afternoon light coming through a window that needed cleaning. The operational content of the meeting was done. You were both still sitting there anyway, neither of you having made the move to leave, which was itself something neither of you commented on.

"You'll go back to running it your way," Bruno said, looking at the closed file on the table between you. "Once this wraps."

"It was always going to wrap."

"I know," he said. "I'm not objecting to it."

"What are you doing, then?"

He looked up. There was something in his face that wasn't quite the usual composure, a fraction of strain underneath it, like he was working through something in real time and hadn't fully decided where it ended.

"And now you don't think that."

"I think I stopped finding it frustrating somewhere in the last six weeks," he said, "and I'm not sure exactly when, and that bothers me more than the disagreements ever did."

The room was very quiet. Somewhere outside, ordinary Naples noise continued, indifferent.

"Bruno," you said.

"I'm aware of what I'm saying," he said. "I've thought it through. I don't say things I haven't thought through."

"I know," you said. "That's sort of the problem."

He almost smiled at that, the same flicker you'd caught once before and not since, gone again almost immediately.

"This is going to be complicated," you said, because it was true, because you were both capos in the same organization with adjacent territory and a year of professional friction on record, and whatever this was didn't have a simple shape.

You looked at him for a long moment. You thought about Iron Maiden moving before your decision had finished forming, about a small room with his hands folded and thank you landing heavier than two words should. About a parked car and a question he'd only half-answered and the fact that you'd let him get away with it because the half he gave you mattered more than you expected.

"You could have said something earlier," you said. "Instead of twelve months of this."

"You could have too."

Neither of you moved. The desk was still between you, a small distance that had never mattered before and suddenly felt enormous, the last structural thing holding a year of careful argument in place.

He was looking at you the way he looked at a problem he'd already solved but hadn't acted on yet, like the conclusion was settled and only the execution remained, and he was giving himself one last moment to be certain before he committed to it. You recognized the look because you did the same thing, right before a fast call, that final half-second of stillness before Iron Maiden moved.

"You're doing the thing," you said.

"What thing?"

"Where you think it through one more time before you let yourself do it."

Something shifted in his expression, not quite a smile, closer to being caught. "Yes."

"You don't need to."

"I know," he said, and didn't move anyway, which told you that knowing and doing had never been the same thing for him, not once in the entire year you'd spent learning the shape of his hesitations.

The light through the window had gone low and amber, the late kind that made everything in the room look like it was holding its breath. You could hear, faintly, the ordinary sounds of the building below, someone's footsteps, a door. None of it touched the room you were in.

"Bruno…"

"I'm aware," he said again, quieter this time, "that I've spent a year being very certain about a great many things, and considerably less certain about this one."

"That's not an excuse."

"It's not meant to be."

You stood up from your seat, moving to look out of the window. Bruno followed. 

He came around the desk first. As you looked at him, the street lights illuminated his face perfectly. After a brief moment of quiet, you turned to Bruno and offered him your hand. He returned a strong handshake, however he didn’t let go. He raised your hand to his lips, lightly peppering your knuckles with a kiss. It was as if his serious demeanor had vanished, gazing into your eyes with a bittersweet look. The kiss to your hand left your face heating up. Flustered, you tried to brush it off as Bruno just being a gentleman. You turned away, trying to focus on the view out of the window and calm yourself down.

Bruno did the same, before letting out a small sigh and placing a hand on your chin, turning you gently to look at him. Before you could think, you took a small step towards him, the room growing tense. 

He met you the rest of the way before you'd fully closed it, like he'd been waiting only for confirmation that you wanted the same thing he did, and the moment confirmation arrived there was no more deliberation left in him at all.

You barely catch the way Bruno’s breath hitches as he leans in closer, eyes sparkling with mischief. 

“B-Bruno,” you whisper, breathless against his lips. 

The kiss that followed was nothing like the arguments had been, except for the fact that it had the same quality underneath it entirely, the same total attention, the same refusal from either of you to do anything by half measure. His hand found the side of your jaw with a careful precision that didn't quite manage to stay careful, and you felt the exact moment his composure gave out completely, a quiet whimper leaving his mouth.

It was, you thought distantly, the only argument either of you had ever fully agreed on.

When you broke apart he was looking at you with something that had finally, entirely, stopped being composed.

His minty breath fans your face, staring into your eyes with blown out pupils. Before you can even think, you lean in again, and his lips are on yours. Drinking in your sweet gasps as he intertwines his tongue with yours, you feel him smile through the kiss. His hands wander the expanse of your body, cupping your head to kiss you deeper. Pulling away with a playful bite to your bottom lip, he leaves a trail of hot, open-mouthed kisses down your neck. 

"For the record," he breathed out, "I was right about the warehouse breach."

"You were not."

"The reconnaissance hour produced two profiles and saved your squad from an ambush you hadn't accounted for."

"And my speed kept us inside the window before the target could fully relocate the asset. We were both right. That's the entire problem with you."

"Mm," he said, coming up and placing a kiss on your forehead, and didn't argue further, which was new, and which you decided you could get used to.

The squads noticed at different speeds. Mista claimed credit immediately and extensively, in a way that made it clear he'd been waiting a year for the opportunity. Narancia took three weeks to fully register what had changed and then acted, with total sincerity, like he'd called it from the beginning. Fugo noted it, filed it as logically consistent with patterns he'd already observed, and moved on. Abbacchio said nothing for a long time, and then, months later, said something quietly decent about it that surprised Bruno enough that he didn't know how to respond, which Abbacchio seemed to find satisfying in its own right.

Your own people took it with the same measured discretion they brought to most things, though Renata allowed herself exactly one comment, delivered with the particular calm of someone who had been right about something for a long time and intended to enjoy it briefly.

"Tactical read," she said.

There was an evening, weeks later, with no operation organizing it, no joint report to file, nothing requiring either of you to be anywhere. You ended up on a rooftop in his territory with a clear view of the city settling into the evening, the kind of view he'd clearly chosen on purpose more than once before, for reasons that had nothing to do with you and everything to do with how he felt about Naples.

He stood close enough that his shoulder pressed against yours, looking out at the skyline with an attention that wasn't tactical, wasn't reading the city for threat or opportunity, just looking at it the way you look at something you love.

"I used to think caring about something this much was the same as being afraid of losing it," he said, after a long quiet.

"And now?"

He considered it the way he considered everything, with total seriousness, unwilling to give you a half-formed answer just to fill the silence.

"Now I think it just means you understand what something's worth," he said.

You understood what he meant better than you'd admit out loud, the specific shape of caring about something enough to want absolute control over what happened to it, and the slow, difficult work of learning that some things couldn't be controlled, only trusted.

You didn't say any of that. You leaned into him slightly instead, felt him shift to make room for it without hesitation, and let the city hold its ordinary noise below you both.

Neither of you said anything else for a long time. You'd had a year of words, most of them sharp, most of them necessary in their own way. This felt like the place all of it had been leading, not a resolution exactly, just a kind of equilibrium neither of you had been willing to admit you wanted.

It was, you thought, the best argument you'd never had.

THE STAND — IRON MAIDEN

A Stand that manipulates pressure and force. You can redirect kinetic energy, compress it, hold it suspended, and release it with devastating precision. Defensively, you can absorb impact entirely. Offensively, you can take the force of a falling building and put it in your fist. Its power is control. Absolute, surgical control over something that by nature wants to be chaotic. Bruno mused over that irony the first time he saw you fight. He's never mentioned it. Neither have you.

The joint operation was assigned on a Tuesday.

You got the briefing separately. That was standard for joint operations, a way of ensuring both capos came to the planning table with independent assessments rather than one person's read contaminating the other's before the work began. Theoretically sound. In practice, when the two capos in question were you and Bruno Bucciarati, it meant you showed up to the planning meeting with a fully mapped approach and so did he, and the approaches were not the same, and you spent the first forty minutes of a meeting that was supposed to take twenty just finding the vocabulary to describe what you each actually meant.

The target was a shipping warehouse on the eastern edge of the port district. A mid-level Passione asset had been using it to skim product before it reached the don's distributors — small amounts, careful intervals, the kind of theft designed to stay invisible. It had stayed invisible for almost two years, however when it failed to stay this way the don wanted it handled quietly. No bodies if avoidable. A message delivered in a way that didn't require explaining to anyone outside the organization.

The asset had, upon sensing that something had shifted in the atmosphere around him, relocated to the warehouse and surrounded himself with three Stand users and enough hired security to make a direct approach inadvisable for a single squad.

Hence: two capos, two squads.

Your approach, which you had prepared in the clean logical structure you used for all operational planning, was as follows. Move fast, move before the asset had time to consolidate further. You'd take Iron Maiden straight through the exterior security. Not to kill, just to clear, compressed force applied at nonlethal levels to anyone who wasn't a Stand user. Your squad handled the perimeter. Once the exterior was down you'd breach and locate. The Stand users were the variable, but Stand users had to be in proximity to be a threat and a fast breach didn't give them time to set up. Speed as the primary weapon. The whole thing done in under twelve minutes or the calculus changed.

Bruno listened to this with the focused attention he brought to everything, which you had learned to distrust slightly because it looked like agreement and was frequently not.

"The Stand users," he said, when you finished.

"Addressed in a fast breach. They need positioning time."

"Some do," he said. "We don't have profiles on these three."

"We don't have profiles," you said, "which means we also don't have evidence they're the type that need positioning time. We're building contingencies for a threat we haven't confirmed."

"We're accounting for uncertainty," he said. 

"It is when accounting for uncertainty means giving the target an extra six hours to move the asset or move himself."

Bruno set down the warehouse schematic he'd been holding and looked at you. "Walk me through what happens if one of those Stand users has a long-ranged ability, or area effect. Your breach runs straight into it."

"My breach runs into it faster than a staged approach does, which gives the same Stand user time to set up a perimeter inside the building before we're through the door."

"Or," he said, and there was something in the precision of that single word that you recognised as the moment before he made the point he'd been building to — "we spend two hours on proper reconnaissance, establish what we're actually walking into, and adjust accordingly. Fast is not the same as efficient."

"In this case it is," you argued. "Every hour we spend on reconnaissance is an hour the asset uses to make reconnaissance harder. He knows someone's coming. He doesn't know when. That window is the advantage and you're proposing we narrow it."

"I'm proposing we don't walk three squads into an unknown Stand situation because we're in a hurry."

"I'm proposing we don't hand the target time he'll use."

You looked at each other across the schematic.

This was, you had come to understand, the central argument. Bruno Bucciarati built his operations the way he built everything — with care, with layers, with the understanding that the people under his protection were not variables to be spent. He accounted for uncertainty by reducing it before engagement. You accounted for uncertainty by moving faster than it could settle into something dangerous. Both approaches had track records. Both had costs. You had never, in a year of this, convinced him that your costs were lower, and he had never convinced you of the reverse.

What you did instead was find the structure that lived between your two approaches, which was usually better than either, which was possibly the most annoying thing about Bruno Bucciarati.

"One hour," you said. "Reconnaissance on the Stand users specifically. Not the building, we have the schematic. If we get profiles in an hour we adjust. If we don't, we go with what we have."

He considered this for a moment in the way that meant he was running the operational logic, not performing consideration.

"Agreed," he said. "And we stage the breach regardless. Your squad exterior, mine interior. If the Stand users are positioned inside, my squad has the profile problem, not yours."

"If the Stand users are positioned inside, they're my problem the moment we breach and the perimeter collapses inward."

"Yes," he said, calmly, "which is why I'm keeping your squad exterior until we know what's inside."

You opened your mouth.

"It's not a comment on capability," he said, before you got there, in the tone of someone who had correctly predicted the objection. "It's a division of known and unknown risk. You know the exterior threat. I don't know the interior one yet. That's the division."

You closed your mouth. The logic was sound and you disliked that about it.

"Fine," you said. "But the moment the interior Stand situation is confirmed I want live communication. I'm not sitting on a cleared perimeter while my squad waits for information."

"You'll have it," he said.

The meeting ended. You had a workable plan and a low-grade tension headache at the base of your skull that you associated specifically with having agreed with Bruno Bucciarati, which happened more often than you would have preferred.

The reconnaissance hour produced two profiles and a partial on the third.

The first Stand user was a mid-range type — ability worked within a fifteen meter radius, required line of sight, had been documented in two previous operations as preferring elevated positions. Sniper logic in Stand form. Your squad flagged two viable elevated positions on the exterior and took them off the table before the breach.

The second profile was more concerning. A Stand that worked through contact with surfaces — specifically, it could animate and direct any material it touched, turning walls and floors into active threats. It needed time. It needed the user to be stationary. Bruno noted this and said, "interior positioning, almost certainly," to which you agreed and adjusted the breach choreography accordingly — his squad going in fast on the ground floor to disrupt positioning before the ability could be fully deployed.

The third profile was the partial. Female, Stand ability unknown, only data point being that she'd survived two previous engagements with other Passione assets who had not survived. Which told you she was effective and told you nothing else.

"Unknown ability, proven lethality," you said, in the final briefing. "She's the variable."

"She is," Bruno said. "My squad takes point on the interior. If she's in there, we find her before she finds us."

"If she's exterior, she's mine," you said.

"Agreed."

You looked at the schematic one more time. Clean division. Known risks distributed to the squad best positioned to manage them, unknown risks acknowledged and planned around as well as you could plan around something you didn't have information on.

It was a good plan.

The job went cleanly for forty minutes.

Your squad moved through the exterior security with the efficiency of people who had trained together long enough to not need to speak. Iron Maiden did what it always did, absorbed, assessed, redirected. The hired security were non-Stand, which meant non-lethal was straightforward. Compressed force at controlled levels, applied precisely. Nobody died. Three people would have significant headaches, but they would wake up.

The first Stand user — the elevated, line-of-sight type — made his move from the position you'd already accounted for, which meant one of your people had the angle before he'd fully committed to the attack. He went down without deploying.

The second, the surface animator, you heard through comms as Bruno's squad engaged inside the building. It was quick, messier than ideal from the sound of it, but contained. Bruno's voice on the radio was level, information only, no urgency. The ability had been partially deployed before they reached him — one wall was active, had to be avoided rather than engaged through, but the user was down in under three minutes.

And then the third profile walked out of the building.

She came through a side door that wasn't on the schematic, which meant she'd been there long enough to know about an exit that hadn't been mapped, which meant the intelligence was incomplete. Right now the problem was that she was outside, which put her in your zone, and she was looking directly at you with the particular quality of attention that Stand users had when they were about to do something.

You felt Iron Maiden coil. Waiting.

She didn't move toward you. She looked past you.

The pressure change hit half a second later — not from her, from a different direction entirely, and you understood with a cold drop of clarity that you had been wrong about something fundamental. The third Stand user wasn't her. The third Stand user was someone who had come in through the back of the perimeter while the first two engagements pulled attention forward, and the unknown lethal woman standing in front of you wasn't profile three at all.

She was the distraction.

You spun.

Bruno had come out through the main entrance. The interior job was done, he was moving to consolidate, and the real third Stand user was positioned with a clear line to him, and the ability became immediately apparent in the worst possible way.

Sticky Fingers reached for a zipper on the wall behind the Stand user and nothing happened.

You had seen Bruno Bucciarati fight. You had seen him work in three joint operations and heard detailed accounts of a dozen more. You knew the shape of his ability in motion; the way he opened and closed space itself, the absolute confidence he worked with. You had never seen it fail.

The recalibration was fast. He was too good for it not to be. His stance shifted, Sticky Fingers pulled back, and he went to close-range engagement with the fluency of someone who had trained his body as hard as he'd trained his Stand and never let himself become dependent on any single tool. He was still dangerous. 

But the Stand user knew that too. That was the architecture of the trap. The ability suppression wasn't meant to stop him, it was meant to slow him by two seconds per exchange, make him work harder for every meter, wear down the math until a window opened. And the woman who'd come out the side door was moving now, not toward you but flanking, extending the engagement, and the third Stand user was conserving something, hadn't fully committed yet, and you understood what they were doing:

They were waiting for him to be tired.

Your squad was managing the distraction. You had maybe ninety seconds before the flanking move completed and the window the Stand user was waiting for opened.

Ninety seconds was enough.

Iron Maiden caught the force mid-air. You felt it flood into your Stand like water into cupped hands, enormous, more than you'd expected, whoever this was had been saving it. You held it for one suspended second, compressed it down, and redirected it straight into the ground six feet to Bruno's left.

The pavement split in a clean line. The shockwave knocked the Stand user off balance. His concentration broke and Sticky Fingers opened a zipper across the Stand user's center before the man had finished falling — nonlethal, contained, efficient. Retired.

The woman who'd come out the side entrance looked at the Stand user on the ground, looked at you, and made the correct calculation. She ran. You let her go.

The silence after a job had a particular quality, the specific silence of things that had been loud and were now not. Your squad moved through it on trained instinct, securing, checking, reporting in on comms with the even tones of people who were professionally fine and would be personally fine later.

Bruno's squad came out through the main entrance. Mista was talking as he was always talking after a job, some metabolic need to reintroduce noise, and Narancia was answering, and Fugo was ignoring both of them and doing a visual sweep of the perimeter with the systematic focus he brought to everything.

Abbacchio came out last, looked at the split pavement, looked at you, and said nothing. Which was Abbacchio's version of acknowledgment.

Bruno walked the line of the pavement crack from one end to the other. You watched him do it. He was assessing; reading the angle of the redirect, the depth of the split, the distance from his last position, constructing backwards from the physical evidence what had happened and why.

You knew this because it was what you would have done.

The debrief was held at a location two streets from the warehouse, a back room in a restaurant where the owner had long since learned not to ask questions. The boss’s representative arrived, collected the confirmation of success, noted the structural damage to the pavement as a minor liability and the escaped Stand user as a follow-up item, and left.

You and Bruno did the operational review while your squads drifted to the main room, the noise of them filtering through the wall, Narancia's laugh, and Mista's voice raised in what seemed to be an ongoing disagreement about something entirely unrelated to the job.

The review was efficient. You'd run this kind of debrief together enough times by now to have a shared vocabulary for it. Coverage gaps were noted. The intelligence failure on the side exit was flagged for follow-up. You walked through the timeline without disagreement, which happened when the operation had gone well enough that the methodology questions were secondary.

Then you reached the timestamp where the pavement split.

"Your zone was the exterior," Bruno said.

The room was small. One table, two chairs, a single overhead light. His hands were folded on the table and he was looking at them, not at you.

"It was," you said.

"You crossed the zone boundary."

"The third profile was interior. The intelligence was wrong."

"The third profile being interior changed your assignment."

"It changed the threat geometry."

He was quiet for a moment. The noise from the other room continued, muffled and ordinary.

"You were watching my zone," he said. Not an accusation. Not a question. The same tone he used when he was naming something precisely because precision was the only way he knew how to handle it.

You could have said that you'd seen the threat develop and responded to it, which was true. You could have said that any competent field operative would have done the same, which was also true. You could have said that the split-zone designation was a planning structure, not a constraint, and that constraints didn't mean much when the actual threat matrix was actively reorganizing itself around the designated structure.

All of that was true. None of it was what he was asking.

"The Stand ability suppression wasn't in any of the profiles," you said. "When Sticky Fingers misfired I had maybe ninety seconds before they got a window."

Bruno was still looking at his hands. Something in the line of his shoulders was very controlled in the way of things being held carefully.

"I noticed the misfire," you said. "I'd been watching your engagement. That's why I had time to read the redirect geometry and intercept."

"Why were you watching my engagement?"

It was a simple question. It had a simple answer, which was that you had been watching his engagement the way you had apparently been watching his engagement for longer than you'd consciously acknowledged, because somewhere in the last year you had memorized the shape of how he moved and what it looked like when something was wrong.

You didn't say that.

"Tactical awareness," you said. "Same reason you know what my Stand sounds like when it's at full compression."

A pause.

He looked up. The composed expression was there, it was always there, but something underneath it was very still, the way of a surface that has had something placed on it carefully.

"You know what it sounds like," you said.

"Yes," he said.

A beat.

"You've been watching my zone too," you said.

He didn't confirm it. He didn't deny it either. Bruno Bucciarati, you had learned, was extremely precise about the things he chose not to say.

"Thank you," he said. Quiet. Completely unperformed. Two words with nothing extra in them, which somehow made them heavier than two words had any right to be.

You'd held compressed force in your bare hands and felt nothing but control. You had no accounting for the way that landed.

"Don't mention it," you said, and meant it literally, and picked up your jacket from the back of the chair and left before the silence became something you'd have to categorise.

The drive back took forty minutes. Your second-in-command, Renata, rode in the passenger seat and did not say anything for the first twenty of them, which was unusual for her. She had a quality of observation that you'd hired her specifically for and that occasionally became inconvenient.

"Clean job," she said, eventually.

"Mostly," you said. "The side exit is a gap we need to flag. And we lost the third profile."

"We didn't lose her. We let her go."

"Same outcome."

"Different decision," she said. "You made a call that the pursuit risk wasn't worth the result. That's not the same as losing her."

You said nothing. Naples moved past the window, evening settling over the city in the particular way it did in this part of it — the light going amber and then dark between the buildings, the street noise changing register.

"Bucciarati's squad is solid," Renata said.

"They are."

"The way he adjusted when the ability suppression hit — no hesitation. Just readjusted."

"He's trained for contingencies."

"So are you," she said, "and you had maybe two seconds to read that geometry and make the intercept. I've seen you make fast calls before. That one was —" she paused, choosing the word "— specific."

You looked at the road.

"It was a tactical read," you said.

"Sure," she said, easily, and looked out her own window.

She didn't say anything else. That was, you reflected, almost worse than if she had.

You thought about Sticky Fingers reaching for a zipper and finding nothing. You thought about the shape of Bruno's stance shifting — that adjustment, weight redistributing, a fighter reformatting himself mid-motion. You thought about the fact that you had seen it from across a contested exterior zone and known immediately what it meant.

Your Stand hummed in the back of your awareness. Quiet now. Settled.

That's the part, you thought, that you can't make tactical.

You hadn't reached for Iron Maiden because you'd run the geometry and identified an intercept window. You'd run the geometry because Iron Maiden was already moving, already reading the force lines, already solving for Bruno Bucciarati as a variable it had decided mattered.

Your Stand, which responded to your will absolutely, had moved before your will had formed.

You filed it. You didn't look at it directly. You watched Naples finish going dark outside the window and thought about the operational review tomorrow and the follow-up on the third profile and the intelligence gap on the side exit, and you thought about all of those things with great thoroughness.

You did not think about the way he'd said thank you in a small room with his hands folded on the table and something careful in his shoulders.

You did not think about the fact that he knew what your Stand sounded like at full compression.

You did not think about what it meant that he'd been watching your zone.

All of that, you told yourself, pulling into your territory as the last of the evening light went out, is for another time.

You almost believed it.
