interesting narrative construction, expertly subverts the reader’s expectations, and packs a punch in just 16 pages

the sister has a really sweet subplot of realizing she has a giant gay crush on her best friend (the younger sister of the woman the brother’s courting)

#[despite the cover and my writeup the m/f relationship gets about equal page-time to the f/f one. both get HEAs]#crimson yuletide #rachel ford #i was looking through my holiday ebook lists for something that wasn't A Romance and went with my gut on this one :)#it's self-published with some of the lack of polish that comes with that - overused phrases. occasional weird punctuation/word choice #also there are snippets of poetry between the chapters that can be weirdly bad and add basically nothing to the story?#(i saw ‘weirdly’ bc there are grammar mistakes way beyond what’s in the actual story #and i can’t tell if maybe it’s intentional to seem old or translated? but it’s never referenced in the text #ig it’s supposed to add to the rising tension but it ends up being repetitive and/or difficult to parse in a way that’s distracting. imo)#but i had a fun time!! and it was a really quick read #sarah talks books #2023 reads
