im not going to lie goose really swung for the fences with an ending that is basically "even if you are permanently disabled by your suicide attempt beyond recognition you deserve a place." The abstractions being more integrated into the circus to me reads as a commentary on institutionalization. I am not surprised an ending that basically says even your changed, cognitively damaged self has value is being rejected. Some people go into deep rage when they see someone like jaxx being accommodated in spite of the past behavior. The fact is, an ending treating abstraction as a real, serious, non romantically-tragic end point for a main character was always going to rankle people. execution aside I do respect the choice to pick the uphill battle that humanizes the disabled over endings that would have been much easier to pull off.
