contrary to popular belief, regulus black didn’t fall in love with james potter the first time he laid his eyes on him
it was in fact the summer before, when his brother came home from hogwarts rambling on about this boy with quidditch abilities to rival regulus’, with hair so unruly sirius joked he should get tips from himself, and a heart full of gold that had nothing to do with his parents’ fortune
regulus black fell in love with james potter then, and then continued loving him
so it was all the more devastating when it ended
james is shy around regulus pre-relationship.
now don’t get me wrong, from the moment he actually started talking to reg he was the usual flirty minx everyone knew him has. but when they actually start to go out and he realizes regulus reciprocates those feelings of his, he starts feeling nervous and hot whenever he’s around him. he will be standing there to pick up reg for their date that he planned carefully, the flowers that he knows he will like in one hand while the other fixes the colar of his shirt for the 100th time that night. he smiles brightly when reg finally opens the door, shyly stuttering out compliments about how handsome he looks. if they go on a cinema date, james will most definitely take the opportunity to hold regulus’ hands and will also blush furiously when the other leans his head on his shoulder and squeezes his hand. he will sneak glances in a not very discreet way - mostly because he ends up staring at regulus for a whole minute because he’s just so pretty. he insists on dropping reg back after the date and obviously regulus, like the cheeky one he can be, presses a soft peck on the corner of james’ lips. all to watch him pull out that amazing smile and see the blush spread from his neck to his incredibly soft looking cheeks.

Regulus who starts to slowly develop a crush on James, finding his brother’s best friend cute despite his brashness and arrogance, who doodles his face in his diary (that mf definitely had a diary). James who one day goes ‘Shit. SHIT. HE’S GORGEOUS.’ and can’t get Regulus out of his head, crashing in love with him.

The clock ticks slowly, mocking the silence that hangs between them. James leaned back in his chair, arms crossed, eyes narrowed at the man sitting across from him. Regulus was staring at the file in his hands, unbothered by the weight of the tension thick in the air. The quiet between them was almost suffocating. “So, you’re telling me,” James broke the silence, his voice dripping with sarcasm, “that you think the killer’s motive is this?” He tossed his pen onto the desk with an exaggerated motion, his frustration seeping through. “You honestly believe that?” Regulus didn’t look up from the file, the corner of his lip curling ever so slightly. “You always underestimate people, Potter. It’s why you miss half the clues. I’m following the evidence, not your feelings.” His tone was icy, as always, but there was something simmering beneath the surface. James clenched his jaw, fighting the urge to lash out. “Right. Because your method of waiting for the killer to make a mistake is so much more effective,” he muttered, leaning forward on the desk. “This case is moving fast. We don’t have time for your methodical nonsense.” James registered the eyeroll coming from Regulus, choosing to ignore a remark. "The methodical nonsense helped me solve countless cases, reign in your savior complex just this once, would you?"

I GENUINELY believe Regulus Black was the kind of person everyone flirted with, but he just never picked up on it, so he truly had no idea when someone liked him.
Que James Potter who wouldn’t know subtlety if it slapped him in the face, and upon coming to the realization he likes Regulus- is just so forward and incredibly bold about it. Flowers, chocolate, crapily written poetry and a note that says
“Hogsmeade? Yes ◻️ :) No◻️:(“
And Regulus combusts on the spot because when has anybody ever taken an interest in him? Why has JAMES taken an interest in him?
Meanwhile the entire student body is going through the five stages of grief.
Have we considered Regulus asking James out and James rejecting him.
James is ALWAYS the one to chase people. He is literally a chaser. So maybe he likes the change of pace that is Regulus chasing him. Maybe that’s what drew him in.
Maybe James was a little insecure and Regulus chasing him was a solid reminder that someone WANTED him. Maybe that’s why he keeps rejecting Regulus. Maybe he knows Regulus is a rich boy who’s used to things being within his reach. Maybe he’s worried once Regulus has him, he won’t want him anymore.

James knew how to make the first moves, he loved it. Relationships for him resembled a bright Monopoly board - straightforward and clear. The rolling of the dice symbolized his contribution to the relationship and how far he would go with each step.
However, the relationship between Regulus and James didn't start on the “start” board, and each step didn't depend on the dice. No, instead, James found himself on a brightly colored Twister field. And every message from Regulus, every meeting made him twist his limbs and try to balance among the incomprehensible chaos of bodies around him. No systematization, because you don't know what step will come next. You don't know what movement will make the whole structure collapse.
So yes, Regulus is a Twister. And despite all the discomfort, James intends to stay until the end. Besides, he's pretty tough and flexible, so the odds are good, right?
