This Year in SCA 111H
Going into this class I wasn't sure what I was getting into. Originally I thought it was a small, honors, discussion based class. The first time I walked in the class I was shocked to see a huge class. Quickly I learned that the size of the class and the number of professors was not a detriment, but an asset to the class. This class was certainly not without it's share of problems, but overall I grew from the class. It allowed me to collaborate with classmates through group projects that taught me design principles, the creative process, and how design can play a role in my life going forward.
"Design" is an interesting space. It's not architecture, it's not engineering, it's not graphic designing, it's not videography, it's not sociology, it's not marketing, but at the same time it's all of these things. Design is a mindset, and the process is a way to go about solving problems. Whether it's fixing the layout of a college lunch destination or creating an app, design is a way of thinking that critically attempts to identify problems, then ask, "how might we solve ________". This simple principle, the principle that was ingrained over and over again in our brain through this class, is something I will carry with me the rest of my life.
Knowledge about how to conduct a productive creative process is a skill. We learned the steps to design something. From observing to prototyping, I learned details and tricks about each process. The most helpful detail was the sticky notes. People are afraid to say ideas because they think they might be stupid. This simply erased this fear which spurred creativity and innovation. The most helpful thing was the group work. Hands-on learning is a tough way to learn, but it's also the most effective. You learn how to deal with people and how to handle yourself within the creative process, you learn how different people have different strengths and weakness, and finally, you learn how to work as a team to solve a problem no matter what.
The parts of this class that were not executed as well were the organization and assignment details. I often didn't know when things were due. Quizzes were terrible as sometimes I did not know I had a quiz to take. As a result, I missed quizzes and now I have a B when I feel like I've been working really hard and doing well. This class needs more solid structure and assignment details.
The most important benefit that I gained from all of this is a design mindset that I will take with me going forward. Because of this class, I often see problems in more daily activities. Little things that could be improved, like how I should organize my desk. It's not just little things either, I see gaps in the consumer market that design could help solve. The app we designed was an example of this. I don't think there is a great study app. Whether we solved this or not, I recognized the problem and I think going forward I will continue to see problems like this. Being a Marketing major and an Entrepreneurship minor, this critical design eye that I feel like I have acquired could turn out to be a major influence in how I approach my life and my career.
