Capitalism will put the bill on your grave and harass your grieving family until they pay
One of my cousins passed away unexpectedly at the age of 35, and had been paying back a loan from the bank. About two weeks after his death, my great aunt received a statement from the bank (his mail was being delivered to her house) about a late payment. She called the bank and explained the situation and the only thing a manager could say was âWell, thatâs unfortunate. We can arrange so payments will resume in 30 days, that should be enough time to have already paid for the other arrangements.â
On top of the unexpected $10,000 funeral, cremation and burial bill, my aunt had to finish paying my uncleâs $5,000 loan. Sheâs a disabled retiree, on a fixed income, and could barely afford to pay for her insulin for diabetes. She nearly lost her home of more than 40 years. Fuck the system.
She didnât need to pay. When people die, their debts are not their familyâs responsibility.
In fact, it is outright illegal to try and collect those debts from a person who didnât cosign the loan and isnât executing the will.
Who is responsible for paying off the debts of your deceased relatives?
Hereâs a link to the detail on that one.
Banks count on people not knowing that last comment so that they can still get money
They really do.
My great-grandmother had her identity stolen before she died at the age of 93, and thousands of charges were racked up on credit cards in her name. After she passed away, they called my mother to try and collect. My mom laughed at them, and told them: âSheâs dead, good luck collecting.â The credit card asked my mother, âDonât you want to clear your grandmotherâs debts? Donât you want to clear her good name?â My mom laughed at them again. âNo,â she said. âBecause a 90 year old wasnât watching porn with those credit cards, and her name is fine. Donât give credit cards to old women likely to pass away soon. This is on you.â
Which is how I learned as a young child to always question collection agents, and to never pay off debts that arenât your own. They often canât even collect that money from the estate, if there is one, depending on how you write your will and what kind of account the money was kept in.
DO NOT EVER PAY OFF DEBTS THAT ARENâT YOUR OWN.
If a loved one of yours dies and bill collectors (credit cards, loans, etc etc) start calling you off the hook and request that you pay off their debts, tell them in no uncertain terms to go fuck themselves.
The reason being is that the moment you give them a single penny, that debt is now on YOU because youâve now agreed to pay it off.
Do not agree to pay off their debt. Do not pass go, do not give them $200.
Boosting this to let people know that if any of these greedy little dog-fuckers start harassing them to pay off a relatives debt the correct thing to do is just tell them to piss off and not pay them a single thing
And that there is NOTHING they can do if you do this
Never, ever, EVER pay so much as a single cent on a debt owed by someone whoâs passed away. You make even a single payment and thatâs considered you accepting responsibility for the debt, and they can then legally expect you to repay the whole thing.
Theyâre like vampires - they canât collect unless you let them in. Donât invite them in.
DO NOT EVER PAY OFF DEBTS THAT ARENâT YOUR OWN.Â
DO NOT EVER PAY OFF DEBTS THAT ARENâT YOUR OWN.Â
DO NOT EVER PAY OFF DEBTS THAT ARENâT YOUR OWN.Â
DO NOT EVER PAY OFF DEBTS THAT ARENâT YOUR OWN.
and DONâT consolidate your student loans with your significant other! if something happens to them you are legally on the hook for that money!

The Good Place (2016-2020)
brah
The Good Placeâs take on morality is so important to me. It never suggests that being good is easy or straightforward - quite the opposite - but it says, over and over again, that we need to try because weâre all people and we all matter.
For anyone who doesn't live with children or watch cartoons on a regular basis, Nickelodeon went off the air for 8 minutes and 46 seconds today. During that time, instead of playing shows or commercials, there was a Nickelodeon orange background with scrolling and repeating messages about racial equality, the right to education, and the right to be safe from harm and hatred.
For those who aren't aware, as I wasn't until I googled it, 8 minutes and 46 seconds was the exact amount of time that George Floyd was pinned on the ground.
There's nothing subtle about this and I'm just. Shocked. In a good way of course, I've just never seen this sort of rallying behind a race-based social movement.
Nick has almost always tried to treat its viewers as intellectual citizens looking for clarity on current issues. I am glad to see they took a clear stance on this problem and are still trying to give answers to kids that parents, in this case white, that say a topic is too complicated to talk about with children. This kind of stuff can really make a difference and ease anxiety for kids.
When I was growing up Nickelodeon aired Nick News with Linda Ellerbee. It covered some very somber topics, making them understandable for kids and teens. So anyone saying this is inappropriate: Nick used to be like this. It used to treat kids like they have brains and kept them informed.
and you DIDNâT hear a peep out of us bc this community knows what itâs like to let a virus go unchecked and for the government to not give a single shit
I legitimately donât understand how a single person can be this clueless not on purpose
Desperate Diatribes of the Deplorables: An Analysis of Criticism Against Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
A lot of people were perplexed by criticism of AOC using her free time and âgovernment wagesâ to play video games.Â
Itâs her money. They know that.Â
But conservative logic is never very logical.
âRobertâ later tried to justify his comment.Â
And James felt the need to tack this on to Robertâs justification.
These two seem very concerned about how congresspeople manage their finances. If $400 to play a video game is a big deal I wonder how they reacted to thisâŚÂ
This idea of AOC âwasting taxpayer moneyâ is an extension of a much more common criticism she gets. They think earning money is antithetical to her idealsâconstantly telling her that because she is a âsocialistâ she should be giving her salary away.Â
Itâs a constant theme in her Twitter replies.Â
And it is a continuing frustration of mine that conservatives donât know what the hell socialism is. I mean, one of the goals of Democratic Socialism is that charity shouldnât be necessary because everyoneâs needs are met. So Iâm not sure where they got this âGIVE YOUR MONEY AWAY!â schtick.
They see all socialism as akin to authoritarian Soviet Union style âcommunismâ or authoritarian Cuban style âcommunismâ or corrupt Venezuelan âsocialismâ or the authoritarian âCommunistâ Party of China.Â
None of those examples are particularly socialist. More rebrands and bastardizations. Conservatives always ignore the âcorruptâ and âauthoritarianâ qualifiers and then also refuse to acknowledge that people can call things whatever they wantâeven if it is inaccurate. Hence the oft debunked âNazis were socialistsâ trope. Â
I mean, Iâm a chubby hairy human that wears a bear hat and I call myself âThe Frogman.âÂ
(When I send unsolicited duck pics, people are very confused.)
In their minds, socialism is just bread lines and empty shelves.
Note: Picture taken in an American CVS during a pandemic where capitalism almost immediately collapsed into a hellscape with nothing to wipe our bums.
Well, almost nothingâŚ
Then youâll hear them bring up âwealth redistribution.âÂ
Iâm pretty sure this is how they imagine that conceptâŚ
Everyone lines up and puts all of their money into a giant pot.Â
The money is counted.
The people are counted.
The total amount of money is divided by the number of people.Â
Everyone lines up again and each person is given the same amount.
Societal collapse.
Cannibalism?
Yadda yadda yaddaâŚÂ âAnd thatâs how you get vEneZuELa!âÂ
Except⌠no one is proposing anything like that. That was nowhere on Bernieâs presidential to-do list.Â
(Some might think that is a âBernie is oldâ joke but, like me, he believes regular bowel movements are important at any age. Get that fiber, kids.)Â
Even with universal basic income, you can still earn beyond what you are given. But the right canât resist a sad simplification of progressive policies. Personally, I think a more accurate term would be âwealth equityââmeaning peoplesâ labor is valued appropriately and all wages are enough to live on.
AOC makes about $175K per year. She is constantly reminded of this and told she has come into great wealth. And, yes, it sounds pretty decent, but she has to maintain two living spaces with high security (she gets constant death threats) and she must travel back and forth from DC to New York quite a bit.Â
Her salary is above average, but I think her labor is valued appropriately. And I donât think she takes that for granted.Â
She takes her role as ârepresentativeâ very literally.Â
She doesnât do the typical 9 to 5 and clock out. She works as much as she can fit into her day without burning out. Youâll often see Instagram stories at 10pm where she is just finishing her day. She travels back to her district much more than many of her fellow representatives. She actually cares for her constituents and communicates with them regularly via community outreach and town halls and⌠visiting their bitchinâ Animal Crossing islands.Â
Recently she set up a food bank and organized a team to help her personally deliver necessities to people affected by COVID-19.Â
Her NY office has also been calling everyone to check up on them and ask if they need anything.Â
Can you imagine Mitch McConnell doing that?
The other reason they think she should give all her money away is because they donât think she earns it. They say she hasnât passed a single piece of legislation. This shows a deep ignorance of how Congress works. For one thing, freshman reps rarely have the cachet to create and pass their own legislation. That said, she is a sponsor or co-sponsor of 13 bills currently.Â
Unfortunately, any progressive legislation created in the House goes directly under Mitch McConnellâs ass where he proudly sits on it.
Itâs hard to create legislation when a surly turtle man refuses to even put it up for consideration.Â
Maybe we should see how she compares with another legislator and their lawmaking achievements. How about everyoneâs favorite Canadian TexanâŚÂ Ted Cruz! A man only his daughter could love.Â
Or not.
Ted has had 4 terms and sponsored 180 bills. Thatâs a lot more than 13. However, a grand total of 2 have become law. Though I am sad to see this one did not get any traction.Â
So Tedâs had more time and more chances but his batting average is about the same. Also, AOC is trying to save the planet and Ted canât get balloon pilots to shape up and fly right.Â
Beyond that, creating new laws is not all that representatives do. Another important job is oversight and investigation. That whole âchecks & balancesâ thing we are struggling to hold on to.Â
AOC was put on the Financial Services Committee which is super rare for a first-term representative. And I think this is where she really âearnsâ her pay. Her questioning of capitalist scumbags is something to behold. She doesnât waste her time. She is extremely prepared. And she is able to draw useful information out of just about anyone she questions.Â
One of my favorite exchanges was when she questioned Michael Cohen. While others were wasting their time trying to get him to bad mouth the president or catch him in lies, she got him to point directly at where the bodies are buried and at the people who covered them up.Â
If we are ever able to hold Trump accountable, I have no doubt these answers will be very useful and damning.Â
And if you want to watch an hour of her grilling more scumbags and making them look like giant tools (among other things), this compilation is pretty great.Â
I donât believe in stanning politicians. I want to remain objective and not find myself in a position where I defend their every action and statement. I want to be able to criticize and influence them to work for the best interests of me and those I care about.Â
We the people are their boss. Â
That said⌠it is really hard for me not to break that rule for AOC. Because she always seems to be fighting for the dignity of the downtrodden.Â
Conservatives are right to fear her. She has a chance to inspire a new generation that will destroy their backwards 1950s values and create a more equitable society. Â
They try to call her stupid, but that falls apart under any amount of scrutiny.Â
They try to call her a child of privilege, an elite, and a fraudâŚ
Wow, look at that palatial estate!
But then they also try to say she is just a lowly bartender not worthy of the Congress of the United States.Â
They canât make up their minds.
And then there is the most common attack they all fall back on when they canât find anything else to criticize.Â
She magically, and all on her own, swatted Amazon away from New York and lost like⌠a zillion jobs.Â
Even though she really only amplified a movement led by many of her constituents. (Ya know, those people she represents.) You can find this great sin mentioned in many of her Twitter threadsâwhether it is relevant or not.Â
Some folks even bought a billboard in New York.Â
(By âsome folksâ I mean small business owner and billionaire founder of Home Depot, Bernie Marcus.)
All of those numbers are misleading and it doesnât mention the billions of dollars in subsidies New York was planning to give for the privilege of having an Amazon headquarters.Â
But⌠Amazon came anyway⌠without the incentives.Â
No, it wasnât quite the 25,000 jobs that Amazon promised theyâd deliver. But having Amazon around hasnât exactly worked out for everyone and she was probably right about it being a bad idea.Â
The attempts to quash her spirit have been unsuccessful. She continues to thrive and gain momentum in her career. They seem to be running out of ways to criticize her so they have become desperate to find things that will tear her down. She seems to have inherited Obamaâs âGrey Pouponâ attacks on the daily now.Â
With everything she does, they must find some way to criticize. This Animal Crossing thing is only the latest ridiculous attempt. And it wasnât just âRobertâ saying thatâthe GOP candidate running against her tried the very same thing.Â
I wonder how that went for her.Â
I think one of my favorite failed attempts at criticism was when the news broke that AOC was using her own campaign contributions to feed her district during this pandemic.Â
This is the money she needs to get reelected. Youâd think this selfless act that risks her campaignâs resources would be seen as positive⌠even by the coldest right wing hearts. Seems like a safe, criticism-free activity.Â
But as Dr. Ian Malcolm saidâŚÂ Â
Suddenly they all became campaign finance experts.Â
âYou are feeding the poor incorrectly!â âJesus probably
It would seem they didnât google the FEC regulations before making this accusation.
And if they are truly that concerned about campaign finance laws, then Iâve got a doozy for them.Â
Remember kids, never leave a paper trail when paying off adult film stars.
In conclusion, my personal politician-stanning rules be damnedâŚÂ
AOC has twirled into my heart and given me hope that things can change.Â
I think sheâs neato and I want to have a puppy playdate with Otis and Deco.Â
