Story time:
In middle school biology, we did an experiment. We were given yams, which we would sprout in cups of water. We then had to make hypotheses about how the yams would grow, based on descriptions of yam plants in our books, and make notes of our observations as they grew.
Hereâs what was supposed to happen: we were supposed to see that the actual growth of the plant did not resemble our hypotheses. We were then supposed to figure out that these were, in fact, sweet potatoes.
What actually happened was that every single student in every single class lied in their notes so that their observations perfectly matched their hypotheses. See, everyone assumed the mismatch meant they had done something wrong in the process of growing the plant or that they had misunderstood the dichotomous key or the plant identification terminology. And, thanks to the wonders of a public school education, everyone assumed the wrong results would get us a failing grade. We were trying to pass. We didnât want to get bitched out by the teacher. Curiosity, learning, science - that had nothing to do with why we were sitting in that classroom. So we all lied.
The teacher was furious. She tried to fail every student, but the administration stepped in and told her she wasnât allowed to because a 100% fail rate is recognized as a failure of the teacher, not the class. It wasnât even her fault, really, though her being a notorious hard-ass didnât help. It was a failure of the entire educational system.
So whenever I see crap like Elizabeth Holmesâs blood test scam or pharmaceutical trials which are unable to be replicated or industry-funded research that reaches wildly unscientific conclusions, I just remember those fucking sweet potatoes. I remember that curiosity dies when people are just trying to give their superiors the ârightâ answers, so they can get the grade, get the job, get the paycheck. Itâs not about truth when itâs about paying rent. Thereâs no scientific integrity if you canât control for human desperation.
i support universal free healthcare for one simple reason: if you are diagnosed with a terminal illness you should quit your job. quitting your job is the correct response to terminal illness. but you canât do that if your healthcare is tied to your job
listen if somebody knows that they will be dead in a years time, and you are forcing them to continue to come into work, thatâs fucked up. terminally ill people should be able to quit their jobs and live their last few months to the fullest. i donât get how thatâs a controversial opinion
"This person who receives government assistance bought something they don't need for $100."
I don't care. Not even a little.
The taxpayers paying $100 is equivalent to $0.0000003 per US person. I'm willing to spend an extra microscopic fraction of a cent if it means a poor person gets to enjoy life for once.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk's net worth is over $2,000 per US person. Thousands per US person is also spent on military, policing, incarceration, and other acts of tyranny. I'm much more angry about that.

really just want to live a quiet life with quiet, genuine, humble people. not interested in loud people or dramatic situations. just want peace, and the sun, and tenderness, and warmth.
It's a lot healthier to go for a daily walk than to sign up for a gym membership you won't be using because you hate that kind of exercise. It's a lot healthier to eat a frozen meal than to skip a meal because you were too tired to cook something healthy. It's a lot healthier to take a quick shower than to procrastinate an elaborate routine for days. Don't aim so high that you won't be hitting anything!
this is actually really helpful and affirming thanks
*in tears* Thanks kitty, I needed this...
You know what happens when you donât have a âvalidâ social security card, driverâs license or birth certificate anymore? You become undocumented. And you know where theyâre putting undocumented people? In the all the warehouses theyâre converting into fucking prison camps.
If they can invalidate anyoneâs documentation without reason or notice, they can invalidate yours.
And now 2 months later, barriers to accurate documentation for trans people are being replicated across the country and additional insidious legislation, like registries of trans patients and reporting suspected trans people to ICE, are also happening.
But no, there are no threats to trans peopleâs wellbeing. Itâs just anxiety and fear mongering by snowflakes đ
âI think America should be taken by Canada insteadâ No, I think America should be returned to its Indigenous tribes, while Canada should return to the First Nations, the Inuit and the MĂŠtis.
âI think America should be taken by Denmark insteadâ No, I think America should be returned to its Indigenous tribes while Denmark returns Greenland to the Kalaallit, the Tunumiit and the Inughuit.
âI think Texas should be taken by Mexicoâ No, I think Texas should be returned to the Apache.
âI think Florida should be taken by Cubaâ No, I think Florida should be returned to the Seminole.
âI think the Blue states should form their own countryâ No, I think the Blue states should return to the Chinook, the Yakama, the NimĂipuu, the Pomo, the Chumash, the DinĂŠ, the WĂ´banaki, the Massachuset, the Haudenosaunee, the Pequot, the Lenape tribes, and the Inuit, the UnangaxĚ and the Tlingit tribes of Alaska.
Stop roleplaying colonialism with a leftist coat of paint and give land back to its fucking Natives.

Anyway adults saying âI donât know isnât an answerâ is part of the reason I learned to lie and bluff so well.
Really though, what was that about? I donât know is a valid answer. It communicates very clearly that the child cannot answer your question, and therefore maybe needs more help understanding the question/situation. Why do you try and push them to give an answer they donât have? That stresses them out and it makes them feel like theyâre being punished for not knowing something.
i thought i was the only one with an âi donât knowâ problem because my parents made it seem it was the strangest and also most horrible thing in the world. i genuinely didnât know and they got angry and that only blocked my thoughts more which meant i didnât know the answer to anything else.
THIS ^^^
Also âI donât knowâ is a commonly used sentence for children with ADHD/Autism. We DONâT know why we canât do our homework. We DONâT know why we canât eat certain foods sometimes. We DONâT know why we forgot to do a chore. Itâs really distressing when you genuinely donât know and people think youâre just lying or indifferent
All you had to do was pay us enough to live.
Hero of the People behavior.
Look, all I'm saying is, if they didn't want their warehouse engulfed, they shouldn't have left it out late at night looking all flammable, and most importantly
PAY YOUR WORKERS
Image description: Aerial shot of a warehouse on fire in Ontario, California.
Abdulkarim had shared a video of him starting the fire, repeatedly saying "All you had to do was pay us enough to live" while lighting pallets on fire,[3]Â and ending his tirade with "there goes your inventory".
He really said that.
