Benjy had gone out for a walk with Tank, his new puppy. Things had been tough lately, not having his best friend anymore, and leaving his family behind, he needed a new companion to fill the void. He was completely aware that a puppy wasnât going to fix everything, but it was certainly a welcome distraction.
There was one person heâd really wanted to meet Tank, and of course that was Jason. He and Jason were similar, and he figured an adorable little puppy might be a welcome distraction for him, as well. So, Benjy found himself in Godricâs Hollow, wandering the quiet streets until he reached Gentle Confections. âAlright, come on now, buddy.â Benjy muttered under his breath as he bent down to scoop Tank up into his arms.
Pushing open the door and smiling slightly at the familiar jingling of the bell, Benjyâs eyes immediately searched for Jason. A small snort escaped him as he noticed the pile of icing that ended up on top of the cookie heâd been working on. âSorry, mate, I didnât mean to startle you.â Benjy apologized with a grin, âActually, Iâve brought a surprise for you.â His grin widened and turned excited, adjusting his arms to give Jason a better look at Tank. âLook, I know heâs probably not allowed in here, health codes and whatever, but he told me today that he wanted to meet my mates, and I knew you had to be the first one to see him.â
âOh-!â Jasonâs hands went still as he saw that it was Benjy, taking a relieved little breath at his friendâs greeting and allowing himself to relax a little more on the exhale, his smile softening for it. âN-No, d-donât be s-sorry- I guess I g-got a little l-lost in d-decorating-â He had been getting more immersed in his work than usual lately, trying to keep his mind off of sadder subjects. Blue eyes did a double take from Benjy to the way he was holding his arms, and back in time to register just what the surprise was. âAwwww, oh heâs s-so s-sweet,â he was removing his apron and coming around the counter without a second thought, reaching out as soon as he could to give the puppyâs little head a gentle pat, a ruffle of his ears. He brought his face close enough to let him lick his cheek. âA-And itâs s-so lovely tâmeet h-him- He r-really isnât s-supposed to b-be in here, but...â He raised his free hand in the direction of the door, giving a little wave and locking it. The sign in the window shimmered and changed to read âClosedâ as it clicked into place. âW-We can go upstairs f-for a while and v-visit. I-I think I skipped my l-lunch break earlier, a-anyway.â
Evan can feel the fear and how nervous this boy is. He couldnât even blame him, he knew the best how it is. Well, not to be afraid exactly, quite opposite. The things they were doing werenât nice at all and they hurt many many people.
He took a sip from his coffee, and for some reason, he didnât want to scare the guy even more. Evan really couldnât understand why, maybe he just was in a good mood altogether and didnât want to spoil it.
âI would say so. Itâs always like that in the war, somebody getting hurt.â

âY-Yes. E-Exactly.â He nodded stiffly and took a couple of slow breaths before reaching for his hot chocolate again. âS-So t-thatâs why I d-donât w-want to think a-about it.â The mug felt warm and welcome back in his hands and he took his next few sips slowly, finding the sweet taste and warmth of the drink comforting. It might not be welcome for him to change the subject, this man might not have any interest in knowing anything about him, but he definitely didnât want to talk about the war any further so he gave it a try. âT-Thatâs o-one of the r-reasons I o-opened my b-bakery, t-to g-give p-people somewhere n-nice, w-where they w-wouldnât have to t-think about it.â It didnât hurt that baking distracted Jason from everything himself, it gave him something to focus on and it was easy to get lost in his works for hours at a time. âI-I was j-just out b-buying m-more d-decorating supplies b-before c-coming in h-here.â
Alexia always liked sweets and cakes much to the dismay of her mother who growing up had to constantly tell her not to indulge on them too much, although to her mother too much was more than one a monthâŚokay she may be exaggerating but it really felt like that sometimes. But anyway, she felt like getting something today, and maybe get something for the little tea party she was supposed to attend tomorrow.
âHelloâ she said returning the greeting, not really noticing the little anxious jump, too busy looking around. âThat would be lovely thank you.â she said looking at him properly and getting closer, with a polite smile âI think I may want some cookies and maybe some little cakes for a thing tomorrow.â
âW-What k-kind of thing a-are the c-cakes for...?â He was glad it seemed like his little scare had gone entirely unnoticed, letting out a little breath and walking along the counter to the display that held batches of made to go cookies. âC-Cookies c-come by the d-dozen, I-I have a few d-different f-flavors available today, b-but I can a-always m-make you something c-custom i-if n-none of them s-suit your t-tastes.â As he spoke his hands moved to slide open the back of the cookie display and he adjusted a few of the treats with a point of his fingers, fixing their angles where they sat. They were arranged on trays and he had four dozen at the moment all in different flavors, sugar cookies decorated to look like dewy leaves, little chocolate trees with swirled bark, chocolate chip cookie cat faces, and ginger snaps iced like little cinnamon buns.

Throwing the little ball high in the air, he barked at it as it sailed, chasing after it to the laughter of those around him. It was as close as Sirius had gotten to playing a game of Quidditch in many years, truth be told. He trotted behind it as it landed, following as it rolled away.Â
He paused, one leg still raised, as a small little limb darted out after it and his ears perked up, Quaffle forgotten in the wake of this new development. Slowly, he made his way toward the bench, nose to the ground as he went. Cat, butâŚ. familiar? Certainly, he was getting all the other scents around them mixed in as well. He leaned on his front legs when he was square in front of the bench - tail high in the air, still wagging. He found himself looking into small, wide eyes and he gave a little boof - more an exhale than an actual bark.
Moments passed and the dog didnât pass by after its ball. Scooching his little body slowly forward, Jason peeked out just in time to see the dog approaching and abruptly he pulled himself back under, his little orange body tense and fluffing up. It stopped right in front of the bench and looked under, but it wasnât barking or growling, only looking. All the same the cat let out a tiny little squeak of a âmowâ, blinking back nervously. Something was different about this dog, though. Its smell was strange, and it was much bigger than any other dog Jason had seen. Meeting its eyes, a small shake in his little frame, he inched himself closer to the opening. Was it possible this dog wasnât really a dog, the same as he himself wasnât really a cat? He came out far enough to streeeetch a paw forward and lightly boop the dogâs nose.
By the expression of his face, he was definitely expecting some good news. There is no good news lately, for either side, unfortunately.
âYou see, in general, I donât like the journalists because their nose is everywhere. But I did like how she wrote it, I suppose.â He replied. Evan was telling the truth, he really didnât like it. But it was nice to read something decent anyway. Now he was curious, as the young one is obviously afraid for some reason.
âAnd why is that, if I may ask?â

âW-Well...â his voice trailed off and Jason froze for a moment, wide blue eyes staring down at the table, before setting down his drink. His hands pulled back into his lap and he fiddled with the ends of his sleeves. âI-Itâs all j-just h-h-horrible. I-Isnât it? P-People are g-getting h-hurt, a-and p-people a-a-are d-d-d-d-â The word caught on his tongue and he gave up, swallowing hard and shaking his head. He felt a prickling at the backs of his eyes, thinking about all of the pain and misery in the world at the moment. All of the pain and misery that had been such a huge part of the last year of his own life. âI-I c-cant t-think about it t-too m-much.â
siriusxorionâ:
He trotted lightly, his steps almost silent - unusual for such a large dog. He didnât miss the surprised looks on nearly all the faces he passed - they hadnât heard him coming, surely, and he would be willing to bet most people hadnât ever seen a dog quite as large as he was. And certainly not one wearing a Quidditch jersey; but he couldnât have anyone reporting him as a stray, after all. His tongue flopped out of his mouth and he wagged his tail as he went, bouncing along after a stray toy quaffle - getting much more enjoyment out of the entire affair than he had any right to.
It was nice to go for a walk in his cat form sometimes, a smaller and more agile body meant for more interesting routes and put climbing on the table. On occasion he would run into people who wanted to pet him and it was always nice to make someoneâs day. He had already been out for a while and was now tucked under a bench, taking a moment to rest and enjoying watching people go by. A ball rolled by and the catâs paw reflexively shot out to bat after it, but a moment later he caught the smell- DOG- and yanked not only his paw back under, but pulled his whole self further in. His tail flicked nervously and he stared out with wide eyes, waiting for the dog to pass.
Evan was pretty caught now, he really didnât know what to think. Was this one so naive? Nothing is going nicely for anybody at the moment. It seems like the war is starting again, even tho it wasnât written in those newspapers.
He was now asking himself if this one is always this nervous or it is just because of him. Either way, he decided to continue the conversation.
âIt depends. It is mostly about Ministry of Magic, to be honest. Pretty interesting.â

âOh. S-So itâs p-pleasant n-not because of g-good n-news, but b-because you f-find the t-topics i-interesting.â Jason bit his lip, nodding a bit in understanding before taking another long sip of his drink. He felt a little silly for having assumed wrongly as he had, but he told himself it was fine. He was doing better lately not worrying too much about what others might think. âI-I donât r-really follow w-whatâs going on in the m-ministry,â he explained, âw-with the war g-going on and a-all... I-I just d-donât want to t-think about it s-so much, i-if I can.â
The guy was pretty nervous around him, that was clear but who wouldnât be. After all, Evan did have his reputation and it wasnât all shiny and good. He smiled when he noticed how scared he is.
âYeah, indeed. Usually it is not that crowded.â he responded nicely, the way too nice for his own taste. Though he wasnât friendly at all, he didnât want to scare him. Not today anyway.
âDid you ever read this papers? I am actually pleasantly surprised.â

âI-It isnât,â he agreed, though with a smile and a gesture of his head towards the front counter, he pointed out, âb-but itâs g-good that theyâre g-getting good b-business. I-Itâs n-nice to see theyâre d-doing well.â âN-Not every day, n-no...â it wasnât often that Jason read the papers nowadays, there wasnât much good news to be found in any of them in the current times. But at Evanâs words he felt a little bit of hope, âhas s-something nice h-happened?â

Trying to get himself to actually read some of the things written in that papers, he has noticed people started to come in. He wasnât really the friendliest person in the world, but he knows how to behave anyway.
He looked at the person who approached him, asking him if the sit was empty. If he was in his bad mood, he would definitely told him to go away but at this point, Evan didnât really care.
âYou can sit if you wish, I donât bite.â

He giggled under his breath, sounding a bit nervous though he was glad the other didnât mind. âT-Thank you,â he said as he tucked himself into the chair across from him. âI a-appreciate it. I-Itâs just... S-So crowded in here, t-today.â Jason blew a little on his hot chocolate before taking a sip and smiled a soft, goofy smile to himself. It was warm and delicious.

Although Evan didnât want anyone to know it, he was kind of coffee addict. Thought of somebody of his friends or even worse enemies would see him there was frightening him a bit. After all, he was really more of alcohol guy.
Sitting with a pumpkin coffee, he made sure nobody sees him, reading Ritaâs boring newspapers. If somebody told him he would ever read it, he would definitely call them crazy or even do something worse. But here he was, sitting and reading, trying to find something interesting around.

Having finished his errands for the afternoon and succeeding in finding some unusual ingredients for a custom bake order, Jason had some time to stop for a drink before returning to start on it. Ordering himself a hot chocolate, he clutched the hot mug in both hands and glanced around at the nearby tables for somewhere to sit. There werenât any open tables, but there was an open seat nearby, across from a man reading the paper. âH-Hello,â he greeted as he approached, âwould you m-mind some c-company...?â One hand found the back of the chair across from the man, but Jason made no move to sit before getting his permission.

Jason stood at the countertop at the back of the bakery, a tray of cookies laid out before him, holding an icing bag carefully in his hands and swirling beautiful little frosted flowers onto the top of each one. He was focused, blue eyes fixed on what he was doing, and didnât see the silhouette approaching the front door of the bakery.
The small tinkling of the bell was unexpected and the sound jolted him with  fear, causing the small man to physically jump where he stood, his heart pounding for a moment afterward as he looked down at the mess in his hands. His grip on the icing had tightened with the scare and heâd squeezed nearly half of it out onto one cookie in a big messy pile.
His head fell forward, Jasonâs eyes wide as he took a moment to breathe and calm himself, hoping that despite the kitchen being visually open to the rest of the shop, the customer might not have seen it happen. It didnât help that he had a couple of little bow clips in his hair holding it out of his face at the moment, making his fright only easier to glimpse.
When his head snapped up again, though his face was pink he was smiling widely and he cast his eyes towards the counter to see who was there.
âH-Hullo, lovely!â He spoke as he wiped his hands off on his apron. âC-Can I help you f-f-find something s-sweet?â
