Listening to the Torchwood audio drama The Hope is just making me think (as usual) about how much I love Owen as a character. He's sarcastic and he has a black sense of humour and he's not a people person when it comes to socialising. But he's very much a people person when it comes to care. He's just so dedicated to his job as a healer and not in a workaholic way, but in a very genuine, everyone deserves care and deserves 100% effort when it comes to their health.
And the extended canon of the books and radio plays do such a good job expanding on that characteristic and showing how much Owen puts into helping others and trying so hard to save them.
This is true in the original canon too, I love that Owen is not good at people when socializing generally but he's great at people when he's a doctor. His bedside manner is awesome (no matter what fanon tends to portray) because he changes up his approach based on how people react to him. No matter what, he's always attentive to the person in front of him.
I just have a lot of feelings about how Katie's death and Torchwood and all that have basically destroyed every other aspect of Owen's life, he's depressed as hell and traumatised and angry and antisocial and unbelievably sensitive. But he's still a doctor and will always be a doctor and the intensity of how much he cares about his responsibility towards others, how much he wants so badly to help and to do it right, is the only thing that's left from his old life.
