Growing up.
It had been about two weeks since theā¦āincidentā with Soozee.
After years of studying the Void, it finally happened.Ā Soozee snapped.Ā She went rogue, tried to kill fellow Firebrand employees, start her own cult, and begin a ritual that would see her āascend into godhoodā, whatever that meant.Ā Luckily, Spritzie and the other Firebrands were able to save her from herself - Teka and the other shamans exercised the void entity out of Soozee and the light cannon they discovered in her lab destroyed it.
After spending the next few days in a coma, Soozee finally awokeā¦and the first thing she did was try to kill herself.Ā After Valerie foiled that attempt, Spritzie took her sister back to the ranch, making a point to lock up any and all sharp instruments, drugs, and especially her rifle.Ā In the weeks since then, Soozee has been spending much of her time sequestered in the guest room she was staying in, hardly ever speaking a word.
One thing she DID tell Spritzie however, was to sell off her assets in order to pay for her hospital bills - she was fired at around the time she tried to lure several employees into her lab to kill them, so healing services didnāt come free for her.Ā So she gave Firebrand Enterprises everything - her lab, her experiments, everything she had ever created.Ā Spritzie was surprised.Ā Soozee would justā¦give it all up?
Soozee said that she didnāt need it anymore.Ā Not any of it.
It was morning, and Spritzie was making coffee.Ā She heard footsteps coming down the stairs, which struck her as odd - her sister wasnāt normally up this early.Ā She turned her head and saw her sister, dressed in an old black robe that Spritzie had lying aroundā¦
As well as a suitcase.
āCould you make my breakfast to go, Spritzie?ā Soozee asked.
āErā¦where you goinā?ā Spritzie asked back.
āI donāt know.ā Soozee said.Ā āMy plan was to go to Silvermoon City first.Ā Beyond thatā¦I donāt know, I suppose Iāll improvise.ā
āWhat are you talking about?ā Spritzie asked.
āIām leaving, Spritzie.ā Soozee bluntly replied as she stuffed a black robe with red trim inside.Ā āI canāt stay here.ā
āW-w-what do you mean?ā Spritzie asked.
āThereās nothing for me here.ā Soozee said.Ā āā¦Donāt give me that look.Ā Please, donāt make this any harder than it needs to be.ā
āB-b-but what about that job interview?!ā Spritzie asked.
āYou mean the one YOU tried to set up without telling me?ā Soozee asked.Ā āIt was an exercise in futility, Spritzie.Ā Mrs. Firebrand doesnāt want me back in her company - she has made that VERY clear.ā
āOkay, but just hear me out - Iām gonna be named a stakeholder next month!ā Spritzie said.Ā āAnd once I become that, thatāll give me a little extra leverage to-ā
āWhy do you even want me here?!ā Soozee snapped.
āBecause youāre my family!ā Spritzie snapped back.Ā āWeāre SUPPOSED to stick together!Ā Weāre supposed to take care of each other!ā
āOh please.ā Soozee harrumphed as she went back to packing.Ā āMom died when you were a baby, Dad and Jakko havenāt been on speaking terms in years, Rikkoās dead - ā
āExactly!ā Spritzie said.Ā āDonāt you get it, Soozee?Ā Weāre runninā out of family!Ā We gotta-ā
āSpritzie, Iām going to say something to you that you may not have ever heard before.ā the blonde goblin said.Ā With a fully packed suitcase, she whirled on her heels and stared her redheaded younger sister down.Ā āGrow up.ā
Spritzie was taken aback by that.
āYou may have everyone else fooled with this angry, bloodthirsty, foul-mouthed persona youāve invented for yourself, but it doesnāt fool me.ā Soozee said.Ā āI know that, buried deep beneath all that rage, youāre still that same, lonely little girl whoās terrified of losing people.Ā Well, let me tell you something - of COURSE youāre going to LOSE people.Ā Thatās how life works.Ā Sometimes through tragedy, sometimes through a mutual parting of ways, but YOU.Ā WILL.Ā LOSE PEOPLE.ā
She gestured to the window.Ā āTake a good look outside, Spritzie.Ā Look upon your ranch.ā
Hesitantly, Spritzie did so.Ā Matilda was chasing the feeder sheep that roamed free across the grounds.Ā Cera was browsing by the blueberry bushes again.Ā Spike was napping by clinging to the side of the barn.Ā Argunite was napping under the shade of a tree.Ā Cambria had buried herself in the mud by the pond.Ā And Pinecone was near the house itself, keeping a steady watch on the others.
āNOTHING you see out there is permanent.ā Soozee said.Ā āOne day, it will all be gone.ā
āā¦Is that what the Void told you?ā Spritzie asked.
āIt didnāt need to.ā Soozee replied.Ā āThatās just a fact of life.ā
Soozee grabbed and hefted her suitcase.Ā Spritzie turned to her.Ā āSoozee, the first thing you did when you woke up was try to kill yourself.Ā How will I know that youāll be okay without me?ā
āYou wonāt.ā Soozee bluntly replied.Ā āAnd thatāll have to be your burden to bare.Ā As for my own burdensā¦wellā¦Iāve been doing some thinking and, for what itās worth, I DO plan on exploring other options before attempting another suicide.ā
āWhat kind of options?ā Spritzie asked.
āDonāt know.ā Soozee replied.Ā āI suppose I wonāt know until I explore them.ā
She looked at Spritzie.Ā āā¦Youāve already done far more for me than I deserve.Ā I thank you for this second chance.Ā I promiseā¦Iāll try not to waste it.ā
And then she walked out of the room.Ā Spritzie didnāt stop her.Ā She knew there wasnāt any point in it.
Soozee left the ranch.Ā She walked up to the Pyrewatch flight master and paid two gold pieces for a wind rider to Silvermoon.Ā Soozee Boomsprocket didnāt know what she would find.Ā She didnāt even know what she was looking for anymore.Ā But she knew one thing for sure - she wouldnāt find it here.
