to balance out the torture wip from last week, I figured I’d share something more lighthearted. Was thinking about possible holidays on Mina-Rau and how they had to have at least celebrated the end of a harvest. Maybe some of the larger cities like Rau even had festivals for it.
While most stalls served food, drink and sweets, there were a handful that offered simple games for the children or anyone else willing to test their skills. Those vendors were particularly animated when attempting to entice the people that walked by, their voices booming over the foot traffic. A man in front of a long table with a series of woven baskets–all various sizes and spaced out on ascending platforms–made eye contact with Bix and held up what looked to be three rubber balls.
“Three credits for six throws!” he shouted.
Bix almost ignored him, but then she got an idea. Her feet came to a stop and she held out a hand to halt Imogen as well. The hunter followed her eyeline and furrowed her brows in confusion.
“What could you possibly–Bix,” Imogen interrupted her own question to chase after her as she walked purposefully towards the stall.
The man beamed as they approached. “Hello, there! Care to try your hand at the toss?”
“She wants to,” Bix said and pointed at Imogen.
Imogen bristled. “What?”
“Wonderful!” Even being a few feet from him didn’t change the man’s volume. Bix almost flinched. “Three credits for six throws! Land three balls into the baskets and you win a bier beast! Land all six and you win a puzzle or two bier beasts! Manage to get one ball into the smallest basket at the very top and you automatically win one of the puzzles!”
Now that Bix got a closer look, she saw that the smallest basket looked barely big enough to hold a single ball and must have been ten feet away at least. The other baskets closer to the edge of the table weren’t much larger and they were all tilted, making Bix certain that if they weren’t thrown at just the right angle then the balls would simply bounce back out. She also got a look at the prizes. Small, somewhat crudely stitched plush animals that represented the long horned beasts of burden on the planet and intricate three dimensional puzzles made from beautifully carved and stained wood.
“Since I am not a child,” Imogen grumbled. “I will not be partaking.”
Bix met her hard glare and pouted playfully. “But I want a prize.”
“I could purchase a gift for you at one of the many other stalls.”
“No.” Bix stepped into her space and said her next words slowly and with emphasis as she glanced down at Imogen’s lips. “I want you to win me a prize, Imogen.”
Imogen held her ground for a few long moments before Bix noticed her swallow subtly. Then, much to Bix’s satisfaction, she sighed and reached into her coat’s inner pocket. “This is absurd.”
“You need to learn how to have some harmless fun,” Bix said in a lighthearted tone, but meant it.
Imogen side-eyed her as she passed the vendor the credits and he handed Bix the first three balls. They were solid rubber and had an unexpected weight to them that could only make this challenge more difficult. Bix held one out for Imogen, but abruptly pulled her hand back when she reached for it.
“No cheating,” Bix demanded quietly. She knew Imogen understood what she meant. No Force manipulation. That would be against the spirit of the game and no fun at all.
Imogen did not complain or agree, she simply smirked at her and took the ball. Then, without breaking eye contact, Imogen casually tossed it towards the baskets. The ball landed perfectly into the smallest one. It hadn’t even grazed the rim.
The vendor gaped at the surprising show of apparent skill, but Bix scoffed. “I said no cheating.”
“Is it cheating if I am inherently talented?” Imogen asked, entirely too cocky.
Bix waited until the vendor stepped away to empty the basket before she leaned in and whispered through a deadpan tone “If your inherent talent is space sorcery, then yes.”
Imogen made that soft sound at the back of her throat that Bix had come to recognize as her version of a laugh. She loved how it reverberated smooth and low in Imogen’s chest along with the small upturn at the corner of her mouth. “I cannot simply turn it off like a switch, you know. You may as well ask me to stop my heart from beating.”

still working on the cute lil torture sequence between Imogen and (you guessed it) Dedra and decided to be evil about it
“Steel yourself,” she remarked. “Lest you be a testament to how weak the Empire has become."
The jab successfully baited a reaction. Meero sneered and sat forward, pushing back against the invasion of her mind. That is when Imogen sharpened her focus and mercilessly cut through the mental wall, rending it like a beast would flesh. Her prey cried out as her shoulders slammed back against the chair, expression and body twisting in sudden agony. The assault exposed every thought, every ambition, every deed the woman had done, and the former Inquisitor eagerly delved into it all.
Imogen was utterly unprepared to witness the memories at the forefront of Meero’s mind. Brief glimpses–images, really–of Bix strapped to a chair in the hotel room Imogen had found her broken and alone in, but she had not been broken. Not yet. Imogen vividly saw the horror in her eyes as Gorst explained his device. “You’ll want to be sure of that, Bix. That you are cooperating fully,” Meero said in the same patronizing tone Imogen had just used on her. “It’s repeat listenings that cause the most damage.” A quiet terror shook through the mechanic. Then a guttural scream pierced Imogen’s skull like a spike. It was unlike any sound she had ever heard before, and she was quite familiar with all sorts of screams. This sound split her spirit open and turned her blood cold, causing her to recoil out of Meero's mind.
They both gasped before silence settled in the room. Imogen stared at her quarry without really seeing her for a few beats. The scream still echoed in her head to the point that she almost covered her ears even though she knew that would be pointless. A sickening twist in her gut threatened to creep up her throat and every part of her wanted to run out of the room. It was irrational, but that horrific sound made her want to find Bix immediately just to hear her voice as she always knew it, because she could not picture it then. She could not even picture her smile after seeing the way she had looked with that headset on.
Imogen stepped away and turned, shutting her eyes tightly. With slow uneven breaths, she reached out through the Force in search of her. Bix hadn’t gone too far. Imogen found her almost instantly. She focused on the vibrant flow of her life force–felt her warmth, felt her heart, felt her strength. It wasn’t enough to banish the images, but it was enough to remind Imogen of the years and distance between Bix and what she endured. It was enough to turn Imogen’s horror into pure rage.
The next breath she released was steady. As she turned and faced Meero once more, Imogen knew she would make this woman suffer more than she had made anyone else suffer.
