no but it is though. so much of the modern liminal spaces movement is the "enchanted forest" trope with a modern coat of paint, only it wasn't dark forests that people grew up scared of getting lost in, it was the empty hallways of a labyrinthine building. the simultaneous allure and dread of a creepy maintenance hallway with one dim light-bulb to navigate by, the strange sense of unease that comes with being the only inhabitant of a building meant for hundreds, if not thousands of people; walking through an empty shopping mall carries the same feeling of anxiety that a medieval peasant would get from walking alone through a forest.
and it's fucked up! because circumstances aligned that just as gen z grew up and lost their innocence, so too did the places they frequented fall into disrepair; what more poignant metaphor could you find for dead decadence than having the excesses of your childhood literally fall apart as you grew up? and its so interesting, because it''s not quite the same fear as the dark forest full of monsters that preceded the liminal spaces movement; humanity has long moved past being seriously threatened by packs of wolves or stray bears, and so the mythology around them stagnates. but that level of industrialization, the building of ever-bigger buildings, the stripping of human imperfection in favor of mass-production, the pervasive sense of not fitting into a world that was supposed to be promised to you? that has shaped the concept of a "liminal space" in a facinating way. i think that's why the liminal spaces movement is dominated by man-made locations- to the point where even when set outside, the focus is specifically on an artificial element of the landscape. the mass-production, the sameness of modern architecture- it's expressed by exaggerating it, stretching what would be in reality large but walkable buildings into expansive labyrinths with no rhyme or reason to their construction- which, of course, is the point; that instead of there being no reason for it's existence, like a dark forest, there is a theoretical purpose that these buildings are fulfilling- one that is entirely exclusive of you. it's an expression of decadence a level above dead rich people haunting their own hoarded wealth; a building built entirely for it's own sake, built until it encompasses the entire world, where humanity has been entirely excised. to a generation that now worries more about the seemingly unknowable whims of corporations, dead decadence no longer means old castles and dilapidated manors where one rich man lived and died- it means empty suburbs where no one lives, grungy shopping malls with every booth shuttered, playgrounds and arcades left to rot at the will of an ambiguous gestalt for reasons strange and opaque.
after all, what better way to describe the fears of the modern young adult, than being lost in a labyrinth that was purposely built, but not built for you?
I think about this cake every day
sorry for exposing your tags but this is hilarious
OP, I hope you don’t mind me making an addition:
When I turned 17, we ordered a cake at the grocery store for my party, as we’d done many times before. If you wanted something written on the cake you’d write it into a section of the order form. We requested, very simply, “Happy Birthday Courtney”. When we went to pick it up the day of the party, this is what we got.
The bakery employees had absolutely no explanation for this. The order form, attached to the box, very clearly did not contain any of those extra names. Whomever had done the writing was no longer in, so there was no one to ask how this had happened. The fact that the name ‘Juan’ is misspelled bewilders me to this day. (I’ve never seen ‘Miley’ without the E, either, but it’s believable that someone might spell it that way.) Did this cake slip in from an alternate universe where I’m one quarter of a set of Hispanic quadruplets? Dyslexic Hispanic quadruplets, maybe?
This cake became the focal point of my party. At least two of my friends regularly called me ‘Courtney Mily Jaun Pablo’ for years to come. My siblings and I still reference it sometimes, eleven years later. It is probably the funniest thing ever to occur at any birthday celebration of my life, and may well remain so for the rest of my days.
I love a botched cake.
one time me and some pals spotted one of those big cookie cakes in a store. it was done up with red icing and little X's for kisses and in the middle it said
No One Like You
now, it took us a while to realise it meant "(there is) no one like you". at first, we all parsed it as a botched "no one like(s) you"
for ages after when we'd wind each other up we'd declare "NO ONE LIKE YOU ☹️👎"
I just feel like it's important to post the Sacred Texts
The Cake Wrecks blog is one that I miss.
Jen started this blog in May of 2008 one night when she was bored. She honestly never thought anyone would read it. She's also not very good
It's still alive!

hot take possibly? but i actually think it’s okay for things to be marketed for adults. it’s literally okay if things aren’t suitable for children. i feel like we are losing the plot
Correct. Furthermore: children bending or breaking the rules to get a peek at something that's not intended for them is a part of growing up.
say hello to the stars for me
My hot take about ghosts is that they're only scary if they're mad at you. White christians are scared of dead people cause they're the ones killing them
"I'm being haunted by vengeful spirits" and why are the spirits vengeful? 🤨 victim blaming much
Me and the girls are hangin out with our ancestors they're chill as fuck maybe if all the ghosts you know have a problem with you you should look inward

1899 was so funny because they're all speaking different languages and every now and then they'll be holding their monologues about their Deep Thoughts and tragic backstories while another character just looks at them not comprehending what they're talking about at all. real danish priest is confessing how he didn't want to become a priest and doesn't even believe in god and portuguese fake priest is like idk man, something weird is for sure going on on this ship. :)
Team Building Exercise Time!
Okay not really, but in a nudge away from "content machine" and toward "there are people on the other side of your monitor," I thought maybe we could do something similar.
If you want to play, reblog this and tell us your name, and 1-2 good/positive/kind facts about yourself, and say at least 1 nice thing about the person you reblogged this from.
That's it! No tagging anyone, no pressure for specific facts. Just sharing a little something nice about yourself, getting to know a little more about the people on your dash, and learning stuff about the people who follow you. Everyone is welcome to play as many times as they please!
I'll go first: My name is Kedreeva, Ked for short, and my favorite soda flavor is black cherry, but cherry is fine too. I love to have a little glass of chocolate milk before bed, as a treat.
Since I didn't reblog this from anyone else, I will say once nice thing about my friend, @luckyspike. Spike is great at coming up with unique ideas for stories, and I'm always excited to hear about them.
Hey. Name is Jil. I was the solo violinist in a couple of performances, was really fun. I also really love singing.
I love Kedreeva's posts. I originally followed for Good Omens content but seeing as how NG is an awful human being I agree with the decision to stop making content. Now I just love information about peafowl and raising animals.
