i think it's funny how, without question, ed would not have gone kraken without izzy. this isn't to say that ed doesn't have agency over his own actions - he does - but it's really clear that the kraken is a threat response, and our loveable crew of muppets was not about to threaten ed.
they were confused, but they had the spirit of the moment and were being very gentle with ed, not to mention absolutely enraptured by the thought of a talent show. were it not for izzy, the ship would have probably still been docked right where the english left them, because they still would have been doing that talent show, and stede would have shown up in the middle of the talent show, or right after, and ngl, it seems very likely that the crew would have immediately assumed that someone's talent show talent was summoning up ghosts.
stede would have, almost definitely, been shoved overboard. not out of malice but because the crew that thought jim could be a mermaid would absolutely think he was a ghost until they realized he was solid enough for them to push overboard.
The crew is in the middle of the Talent Show.
The Swede (singing): Oh, mio babbino caro, mi piace, è bello, bell--AH!
Stede: Hi, all!
Frenchie: Nope, nope, nope, which one of you did this?
Roach: What did Buttons say he was doing for his talent?
Buttons: Ye dare accuse me of summoning this filthy phantom? Besides, were I to resurrect one of our dearly departed, it would be Karl.
Stede: Guys, what are you doing? Hey now, watch the sash, it's going to snag!
Wee John: Sorry, ghost of the captain, but it's for your own good.
Stede: Come on, at least let me explain! AH! (splash)
Frenchie: Good work, everyone. High five?
Jim: ...Didn't he seem a bit...solid? To be a ghost?
Olu: Hey, uh, Captain Ed, you never said what happened to Stede. Is he...not dead, then?
Ed: Yeah, nah, he's not dead. Hey dickfuck, what are you doing here?
Stede: What am I doing here? It's my ship!
Ed: Yeah, and you left!
Stede: But I came back!
Ed: ...Yeah, that's fair, I guess. Let him up.

I'm still occasionally around here reblogging and liking ofmd posts I see, but I wanna say I'm going to be no longer in the community aspect due to some personal experiences. But i wish everyone the best, but the community around here is no longer for me, nor has it ever really been
OK, but, like, the “training montage” starts with a parody of the “old master” images from kung fu or swashbuckling films where we have Izzy shirtless and surrounded by candles “training.” Then the entire montage is a continuation of that parody—fighting, shooting, rope swinging, etc, with the hero (Stede) failing at everything. And then he never gets better. Because that kind of training and that kind of masculinity is just posturing bullshit.
Where Stede DOES get better is in his confidence and his ability to lead, and that is primarily a result of his own form of captaining and him relearning how he was captain of the Revenge in the first place. Doing masculinity HIS way, not Izzy’s.
This is…I’ve never realized how blatant a parody it is. It’s a sendup of how everything Izzy and the masculinity he represents is bullshit.
One thing I love about that this episode is that Stede is right when he says, "I think being out in the field is my thing. It's like I blackout and my body just takes over." When he's training with Izzy in the parody montage, he can't do any of those things on command, and Izzy is flummoxed at how Stede is still alive. But during the first raid, he jumps into action to punch the guy who comes at him, and during the second, he fires that warning shot at just the right moment and takes charge of the situation. Speaking as someone who struggled to get my current job--despite being highly skilled--because I floundered in the performance evaluation during the hiring process, I can relate to that.
And yes, Stede is always at his best when he's doing things his way, not the way he's shamed into believing is the "correct" or "appropriately masculine" way to do things. We see it on the show time and again, how Stede uses his creativity, his theatricality, and his "talk it through" philosophy to win the day.
YES! I love this too and I think it often gets missed: Stede has very good reactions. He knows what to do without thinking (and this is often something that adept people can do - people who are excellent chefs or musicians or athletes know and practice all the skills needed, but they also do things automatically and if they think too much about a skill, they can fuck it up). He also can learn, and learn quickly, not through bullying but through patience. He learned from Ed, enough that he's able to survive being run through, and he learned from Olu and Jim. He adapts - he's far more physically adept in Season 2 in part because he's been at sea longer and learned to manage himself better.
