We need some gremlin energy (Caine you are pouring a bit wrong)
Squirtle (2019) - Full Metal Wall Illustrator: tetsuya koizumi Unbroken Bonds
"if Jax is a trans woman she's still an abuser so she's bad representation so the show is transphobic" you're an idiot. you want your blorbos to be perfect ideal angels, I want my blorbos to be realistic, nuanced, flawed human beings, we are not the same. I LIKE that she's messy and fucked up and problematic, I think it's a realistic depiction of how a lot of repressed and traumatized trans women are. I think the show goes to great lengths to explore how and why she is the way she is, and to evoke sympathy for this kind of person. it doesn't excuse her actions but it does make them understandable. and I think the fact women like that deserve sympathy is an idea worth stating and worth shouting. yes she's a bully and she hurt everyone around her and that may never change. she still deserves sympathy.
The show does make a point of calling out how her actions hurt those around her. They literally show how she drove two people to suicide and someone actively recovering from the trauma of her abuse.
Gangle's character arc is literally going from being in fawn response and terrified of Jax to living a life outside of that fear. She becomes more confident in herself, pursues her passions and desires, processes her feelings and forms safe, strong emotional bonds with other people. She heals from Jax's abuse. If the show condoned those actions they wouldn't bother writing a character like Gangle.
And after Jax abstracts everyone grieves her differently.
Ragatha had already gone through the grief of losing her as a friend, so she alludes to that and deals with the bargaining stage first, because she wonders if insisting on staying friends with Jax would have prevented her suicide. We don't see the effects of Jax's abuse of Ragatha in this moment because she had already been processing that this whole time, because the loss of their friendship happened right as Jax was slipping into those abusive, avoidant behaviors.
Pomni, being the closest thing to a friend Jax could get to after the whole ordeal with Ribbit and Kaufmo, is the one to look for her abstracted form and try to calm her down first. She's the only one who can actually reach out to Jax in that vulnerable state and patch up the wound enough that everyone else doesn't get soaked in all the blood gushing out.
Zooble is angry, because their relationship to Jax was mostly just calling her out on her bullshit when it got too much and ignoring her when she was being cruel just because she needed attention. They're important to each other within the narrative and their character themes, not in their actual relationship with each other.
But Gangle? She deals with the relief of her abuser not being there anymore first. She asks "why can't I cry for him?" because of course the first emotion she feels wouldn't be sorrow. I love that they point that out, and I love the "having complex thoughts?" scene.
Gangle is only able to sincerely cry about Jax's death after they build the pillow forth, because that's also when Jax gets humanized for the first time for everyone that isn't Pomni. That's when Jax is finally the vulnerable one in the community, and she's dependent on everyone's care and empathy; that's when Gangle can safely see Jax as something other than a threat or an asshole, and she can show Jax kindness without compromising her own safety.
I think everything else about Jax being deserving of empathy is literal enough in the text.
If Jax doesn't open herself up, she can never get help. If Jax doesn't admit to her mistakes and work towards doing better, she can't be forgiven. Surprise! That's Caine's arc in those awkward last few minutes of the last episode. The show makes a point of her having to make an effort too, just as much as it does of saying that she's deserving of empathy, of an opportunity, of understanding.
The point all along is that without empathy we can't build a community, and without a community life is absolutely miserable. "It's a lot of work, but it won't be a lot of work alone."
We have the coming out analogy, we have the trans subtext, but the point is not "here is transgender representation!", it's "we need human connection to live good lives!"
And if what you take away from the show is "Jax is bad trans representation because she's a bad person" then I'm sorry but go build your literacy skills before speaking out. Sanitizing representation reduces us to blank stereotypes, and we should want trans people to be seen as humans, not paper cutouts. Humans are messy, humans make mistakes, humans can be cruel.
Your dialogue is stiff because everyone is being too honest
Great dialogue can come from radical emotional honesty. But in most real conversations, people
dodge questions
answer indirectly
lie (badly)
change the subject
crack jokes to avoid serious answers
lie (convincingly)
say half of what they mean
tell the truth but get so anxious/angry/defensive others now think they're lying
If your dialogue feels unnatural, it might be because everyone is saying exactly what they think, or articulating their thoughts too well. Try letting characters hide things instead.
Subtext is where tension lives.
Under the clear blue summer sky ☀️,
in a vast sunflower field overlooking the royal palace in the distance 🌻,
Blaize was enjoying some solitude, undisturbed by anyone 🐈.
The large shadows cast by the sunflowers and the gentle south breeze blowing from the sea to the hills 🍃
transformed the summer heat and memories of the daily hustle and bustle into a moment of quiet respite 😌

like goose said, “by the end of ep 9, jax fans will love her n jax haters will still hate her”. i’ve loved jax since ep 1 even if she didn’t have many lines haha i simply adore the way she is, all flawed n problematic but since the beginning i recognized her behavior may stem from trauma and at the same time i acknowledged that while trauma explains behavior, it doesn’t excuse it; jax owned many people apologies but it’s too late now, she metaphorically died.
and i feel like her selfhatred it’s her biggest punishment for everything she did. i felt so sad inside her head, she needed healing but wasn’t ready to accept it; that’s why i was so glad that pomni was able to find her n hugged her regardless, show her that even in all that darkness she deserved to be loved.
jax is a complex character but it portrays very well how us humans work, our faults, our imperfections.
Flavours of unreliable narrator:
Lying to the reader
Lying to themselves
Simply misinformed
Not paying attention
Has weird priorities
Assumed you knew
Hates you personally
Bad at communicating
Easily sidetracked
Will believe anything
Has weird prejudices
Just kind of dumb
There's also "not technically LYING to the reader but being selective about the information they include" (a.k.a. "lying to the reader by omission"), but I'm not sure if I'd call that a separate type or just 1a.

post: I noticed that in act 1 there's a loaded gun mounted on the wall there. I bet by the end of act 2 it will have been fired
all the replies: you're a fucking idiot
*after act 2*
all the replies: how the fuck did you know that
okay but we can't know for sure that the loud noise and bright flash offstage—which occurred after the character who was holding the gun exited the stage with it—was a gunshot, because we didn't get to directly see it
And then I saw her face 🎵🎶 Not sure I believe her 🎵🎶
There's a trace🎵🎶 Of doubt in my mind 🎵🎶
I'm in fear (ooo) Need to leave her, can't escape her
Unless I hide 🎸🎸🎸
