Thomas Gromas is a Belgian independent contemporary artist, lives and works in Dottenijs, Belgium.
The theme I pursue in my work is everyday life. Our lives are being influenced by many things such as politics, TV, advertisement, work, etc. Because of this cascade of influences, we are not in control of our life.We are dreaming it.We follow a preprogrammed path. Because of that, weâre always missing out on something. Thereâs always something weâre wishing for. Weâre always looking for more. There is always a better place, a better thing.Â
These are the themes I pursue: the fake reality, the manipulated environment, the artificial life. The fairy tale series, for example, is based on this imaginary life, that fantastic world. The repetition of words and text is a way to emphasize the idea behind it.
It reflects the need we have of always wanting more and never being satisfied. That is also why I like to use the word âmore.â
The fairy tale quotes, âonce upon a time,â and âhappily ever after,â reflect how we (I) try so hard to live the life we dream of without really knowing where we go.

Awesome.

"Starting with a commission from Creative Review to create the cover for their Annual and shot over the last 8 years. The project now incorporates 16 letters, comprising of 84 images, 4 films, a host of supporting material including 10x8 inch polaroids and permanent three dimensional pieces. Each letter is different and incorporates a different visual idea. Some primarily conceived for film, some sculpture but always made as a photograph.â

To see more photos that celebrate handwriting, follow @hansulrichobrist on Instagram.
Hans Ulrich Obrist (@hansulrichobrist), a curator and co-director of the Serpentine Galleries (@serpentineuk) in London, began his handwriting on a stormy winter day in Brittany, France, with a poem written by Etel Adnan on a small napkin. âI suddenly realized what we risk to lose should handwriting ever disappear,â he says. âI felt an urge to post an image of Etelâs handwriting. It was the beginning of 700 posts from artists, architects, technologists, scientists, filmmakers and poets. I have a feeling it has only just begun.â
Hans Ulrich is also leading the creation of unique projects for the Serpentineâs Instagram. Each month, they are offering creative direction to a different artist. âThis month it is the artist Cerith Wyn Evans who we are exhibiting at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery,â he says. âNext month, it will be Gustav Metzger.â
These innovations are part of a larger movement of members of the art world experimenting creatively on Instagram. âThe Korean artist and great pioneer of new media Nam June Paik told me a long time ago that there is often a delay between an invention of a new technology, and its use by artists,â Hans Ulrich says. âHe started to make art with television years after television was invented. He could only make art with it once it was like a pencil. We can see a similar thing now with the Internet, itâs only a few years after the invention of Instagram that more and more artists make art with it. Frances Stark (@therealstarkiller) is a great example, for not only does she make art on Instagram, but brings her Instagram project into her analogue exhibitions.â

Michael Summers
Michael Summersâs playful âPop Surrealistâ paintings portray a crisp and colorful world, alive with nostalgia, splendor, playfulness and whimsy. By taking everyday objects and imagery and putting them in a new context, he encourages people to take another look at the world around them. After all, our everyday lives are filled with wonder, beauty, and magic, if only we allow our eyes to see it.

We sing because we canât speak anymore. Design is an extension of that. We canât speak anymore so we evoke emotions through the things we create.
