Re-reading dungeon meshi, one of my favorite things is where they have a character confidently state something, and then have a little insert of another character who is an actual expert indicating that the person in question is completely wrong. Like, at one point Kabru says "Laios said his group got started eating a walking mushroom, so walking mushrooms must be safe to eat". And normally one of two things would happen: Either Kabru would eat the walking mushroom and be fine (Indicating that he's smart), or would eat it and get poisoned (Indicating that he's a dumbass). Instead, a little insert of Senshi pops up to tell the audience "SOME walking mushrooms are safe to eat, others are not, and even experts can misidentify them." So when Kabru eats the mushroom and is fine, it's established that he's a lucky dumbass. So often writers don't let their characters be incorrect unless that incorrectness is supposed to reflect a character trait about how they're stupid. Kabru doesn't later get punished for not knowing which mushrooms are safe to eat, and Kabru is generally extremely intelligent. This subject is just outside his area of expertise, so he's wrong and gets lucky, and the manga is extremely clear on that front.
