Simon "gender labels went out of style 300 years ago" agender Martian man. Gender stopped becoming relevant when alien species indicators became relevant.

Simon asking "what planet you from?" at Grace not realizing that's a wild concept to even consider from his perspective.

Simon "god I'm so tired of aliens" deadpan reacting to Rocky like it's a normal Tuesday event to see a rock spider singing at him.

Simon "we have bigger things to worry about" has no idea what the terms "gay" or "trans" mean and treats them both like an archaic medieval-era word.

2020s Earth sounding utterly and completely barbaric to Simon, who was born late into the social progress movement. Like, real late.

Simon who speaks a far future dialect of Martian-English (perhaps Martian-Korean) and sounds like he's speaking Simlish to Grace. Meanwhile, Grace sounds borderline medieval to Simon (having a nearly 400-year time period gap), who has spoken more Eridian than English at that point and so now even his English is rusty. Simon not batting at eye at this random dude who's humming at him because "I've seen weirder forms of communication from weirder people".

Simon "it's baseline normalcy to put women in positions of power" because misogyny went out the window long ago.

Simon telling Grace about Mars. Grace imagining Mars being some kind of closed-off, scattered colony situation. Then Simon starts talking about cities and how the Mars population had an overcrowding issue (in game lore, they surpassed the population of earth on a smaller total surface area). Grace having to come to terms with the idea that humans absolutely put the equivalent of a Dollar General on Mars.

Grace: Would it be potentially upsetting to you if I wore a skirt to class today?

Simon: ... huh?

Grace: Just checking if it's okay with you first.

Simon: ... What the hell are you talkin' about man? Why you asking me that?

Grace: Uh.

Simon: You don't gotta ask me if you want to... wear clothes??

Grace: Sssure. Right. Of course! Why would you care? You're from ages from now!

Simon: You're fuckin' strange.

Grace being more weird about facing the prospect of queerness than Simon is. Simon's the chill one. Normalized-years-ago pansexual Simon's fucking vibing while Grace has the sexuality crisis.

Arospec Simon and Acespec Ryland. Simon being ferociously demi and compartmentalizing transactional sex with romantic sex because of the circumstances he came from. Ryland who's down with the casual shit while Simon works out whatever the hell is going on with his own avoidant-attachment issues.

A no expectations, no bullshit approach to the ship. "If something happens, whatever. If something doesn't, whatever."

Forced proximity trope gets completely turned on its head. Ryland isn't clingy in the slightest and loves having space and privacy.

Simon who's not used to privacy after prison and being crammed on overcrowded space stations his whole life, so he relishes in periods of alone time. He and Ryland enjoy crossing paths as they go about their day but the cohabitation is friendly yet breathable. Easy.

Simon sprawling out and taking up as much space as possible simply because he can.

Simon "everyone wants something frome me" Nolastname and Ryland "vulnerability is my worst fear" Grace both absolutely enjoying a no strings attached kind of QPR.

Simon: Population control was at an all-time high and same-sex stuff was actually encouraged.

Grace: We just got that stuff legalized where I'm from.

Simon: What? It was banned on Earth?

Grace: I mean, yeah for a long time.

Simon: You monsters... I really should've paid attention in interplanetary history.

Grace: YOU HAD INTERPLANETARY HISTORY TEACHERS!?

Simon: Professors, actually. They didn't shoot dumbfucks into space to colonize Mars.

Grace: ⁉️

Dennis doesn’t cry easily, he learnt not to when he was a kid, and with his life? If he could cry it would be non stop. He doesn’t cry.

What he does do is look terribly sad and in the verge of tears, awfully pathetic. He never means to, his face just morphs into that whenever he’s getting lectured (it’s just feedback, but, to him, there is no difference)

Most people found that out on day one of his rotation in the ED. Not Robby.

me: alright team. we kbow our roles. lets get to it

demolitions expert: wait can we go back to that thing earlier

grifter: yeah what was that about

me: charlie, i want you to take point. you're the most important for the early phase so you gotta make sure to nail this. remember we only have a limited time to pull this off, so the sooner the better

safecracker: youre not really gonna kill yourself if we fuck this up right

At first he kept all his stuff in his bag, then he slowly started leaving stuff on his bed. He didn't put anything in the closet; he felt it just looked pathetic with two shirts and a few pairs of old jeans from his farm days.

He would wait until Santos was done in the kitchen to make his coffee, and wouldn't use creamer or anything because he felt bad thinking about how it costs money to replace.

Santos and Whitaker might grunt or nod heads at eachother but that's about it.

Until one night, Santos is in the living room watching some movie and Whitaker comes in to make coffee and gets hooked, standing in the kitchen trying to discreetly see how it ends.

Santos knows he never left, and she doesn't really care, but about after ten minutes it gets a bit uncomfortable knowing he's just standing behind her in the dark.

Eventually, Dennis hears a "Are you gonna sit down or what?"

"I wasn't-"

"I really don't care. And you can use the creamer, dude, I'm not gonna kill you."

At his pitiful expression, she adds, "I'm just joking, Fuckleberry. Are we gonna do this all night or can I focus on [insert hot woman in said movie here]?"

And they spend the rest of the evening watching that movie together.

The next morning when Dennis walks in, he hears a "hey".

The next week, while Dennis is lying in bed, Trinity walks in and promptly throws a fuck ton of shirts at his face.

Once he's pried enough of the clothes from his face that he can actually see, he goes, "huh?"

"I don't wear these anymore. Thought you might like a shirt from somewhere other than 'Broken Brow High'," and then she's gone.

Dennis never brings up the price tag he found dangling inside one of the shirts.

trinity didn’t grow up calling her girl friends anything because, well, she only ever really had one friend, and she was exclusively referred to as trinity’s best friend. one time her mom tried to call her best friend her “girl friend” and trinity almost had a panic attack thinking that her mom found out she was gay

now, dennis and trinity live together and they’ve reached the point, at least dennis thinks so, of friendship. if he isn’t mistaken, trinity had called him “my friend dennis” while on the phone with her mother a few days back

this day though, trinity walks by dennis, who’s in the kitchen on facetime with his mom, on her way out to get groceries, and says, “text me if you think of anything you need from the store. how are we on your weird milk?”

dennis turns to her and says, “i’m good on lactose free milk, and stop calling it weir-”

then, his mom interjects through the phone, “oh, denny! is that one of your girl friends?”

he looks back at his phone and smiles, “yeah! this is the one i was just telling you about, trinity.” his gaze shifts back to her as he says this, and he sees her face scrunch in an awkward way he’s never seen before. did he say something wrong? is she not his friend?

almost instantly, she rushes out the door, leaving him alone in the apartment to finish talking with his mom. when trinity comes back, it’s like nothing happened. like she hadn’t flinched at the idea of being his friend

but it’s all dennis can think about, and finally as he sets dinner on the table he asks, “did i say something wrong earli-”

“you know we’re not dating, right? i’m not your girlfriend.”

he almost laughs, but instead lets out out a choked scoff, “um, of course? you’re a lesbian.”

“and you’re gay.”

“what? i’m not gay?”

“you’re not?!”

“i’m bi!”

“that still doesn’t explain why you said yes when your mom asked if i was your girlfriend!”

then it hits him, “ohhh okay, there’s been a bit of a misunderstanding here… my mom didn’t mean it like a romantic girlfriend. she said girl friend, as in a friend that’s a girl. my mom thinks i’m completely gay-”
