âBless you,â she said under her breath, shaking her head in amusement. Sheâs forever grateful to him that if he does pick up anything too ⌠personal from her he tends to forget it before it can cause too much trouble. âFunny you should ask. Things are drying up all of a sudden. Itâs like somethingâs holding its breath. Howâs your family holding up?â
His eyes didnât quite meet hers; not unusual for him, honestly. His gaze often took up the surroundings rather than the speaker. The thoughts were around them, lingering in the air as dandelion seeds without direction. Greta had a few differences, though---she was aware of it, aware of him. And not meeting her eyes were more out of habit than catching those seeds.  A smirk, something out of habit too. Witches and their cryptic messages; heâs known to trust those words above written ones.  âSame as always. Nothing new on that front---I think dynamic duo got a new roommate though. And yours?â He nodded to her, finally meeting her eyes as the air cleared. Â

Xanthe had been staring, looking at the male across the room. Â He looked familiar. Â She just couldnât place him. Â She glanced over at the sweatshirt she and Alec had been fighting over just seconds ago and pulled roughly, successfully tearing it from his hands. Â With a triumphant grin, she waved at the stranger. Â âAnd Iâm Xanthe! Â Hi! Â Itâs nice to meeâoh! Â Oh, Chris Grey! Â I saw you in Chalice Hearts. Â So awesome.â Â She turned to Alec, still grinning. Â âHow are you friends with so many cool people? Â You didnât tell us you hanging out with an actor.â
Alec had watched from across the room as his two friends introduced themselves to Chris. He had heard Chris calling his name and maybe a part of him panicked because he hadnât introduced Chris to, well, his world. And that world was rarely introduced to others by Alec. He hadnât meant for it to be that way, itâs just that, well, they were two worlds.  He opened his mouth to say something to Xanthe, ready to take back his sweatshirt she was intending to wear on the walk to the house. But of course he was distracted at the matter at hand.  âChris, heyâŚâ He walked over to where Joseph and Chris were.  âYeah, weâre about to have ourâŚmeeting. But donât worry about it. It sort of came up. So, whatâs up?â
To say Chris was intimidated was an understatement. The elf made sure to keep himself in check, not wanting to make any flowers blossom around them. Chris accepted the hand with a smile, trying to act the part. âChris. Itâs nice to meet you. Any friend of the doctor here is a friend of mine, right?âÂ
Please donât ask for an autograph, please donât ask for an autograph. âI met him for a consult for a movie Iâm in here soon. He gave me some insight in the mysterious world of funeral directors.â
The elf shivered at the feeling coming off the two people in the room, these people are not human. Shifting on his feet he looked to Alec for some help. âItâs nothing serious, it can wait. I can come back later if you want?â Itâs just a movie premier, why am I so nervous?
Joseph withdrew his hand, smiling back as politely as he could.  Through the mere touch, he could pick up on something of the earth, something that mildly reminded him of Kai in some regard.  Alec always had a knack for finding people from everywhere, so maybe this was another from the realm of the supernatural, he supposed.  He was uneasy, Joseph picked up.  By the aura itself, it wasnât hard to tell. He handled it well, though. He contributed it towards meeting them, though there was something else. He glanced at Alec and felt something there too---that uneasiness. Ah, two worlds collide then. Heâd have to talk to Alec later about it, along with Xan. She was better at interrogating Alec than he was at times.  âWeâre not.  Human, that is.â  Joseph tapped his temple with one finger and smirked.  âPsychic.  And weâll wait for Alec.  Itâs nice to meet you.â

âSâalright-â Karina chuckled and pulled the small bag of coffee she had stolen from the hotel lobby the day before, ripping the small plastic until the scent of coffee, however bitter it was, reached her nose. She poured the contents into the filter and filled the machine with water before finding cups that would work best for them, cleaning them again with the bottom of her shirt.Â
âIâve never had much of barriers anyway,â at least not mental ones, âDidnât really know how to control any of this.â She moved to take off her coat on her way back to him, passing slightly to toss the material on the bed but the process was difficult. There was a thought to curse herself for not going to at least the pharmacy to get some painkillers but even the thought of that was enough to send her reeling.Â
Karina slowly pulled the coat off and set it down, turning away from him so he didnât see her wincing until she released a heavy breath in her triumph. Maybe there was a bruised rib, a sprained wrist, more- she had to guess that with the adrenaline of the night and finding companionship in the mind of a stranger, it allowed her to forget. To forget for just a moment that she wasnât such a fuck up.Â
God, she was tired.
It took for that moment to realize, the weight of her coat now allowing her to feel her own strength how weak she really was. The heaviness of her thoughts, her fears, even her own skin was too painful to bear and she was lost in it, in that moment. And how selfish of her to drag someone else into her misery⌠But as the saying goes. For the company.Â
âDo you ever feel,â she took a shallow breath, âHelpless?â
Barriers... He could relate to that, though he was often the one losing grip on them. Barriers meant privacy for other people, meant safety. And whether he wanted to or not, he trespassed. And invaded his own barriers. He had been taught to control it. He was still young when the warlock had sat him down, told him how to clear his mind. And he was young when a witch laid a hand on his head, spoke the words and cleared the world for a moment.  But barriers were not existent. Not in his world. And now he knew it wasnât a part of hers either.  There was that familiar feeling from before, a particular darkness that she had, accompanied by---memories? He was glancing at her curiously, waiting for permission, for her to ask anything, to say something. But she said nothing. And nothing was said when she took off the coat, a pause in her movements. A jumble of thoughts rushed at him, too much to decipher, and hushed at the tail end of them. Joseph held his breath, just then spying the dark bruising. The way she moved around what he assumed were other injuries.  He brought his gaze to hers as she spoke. He could feel her words. The emphasis on the last word Karina offered. Helpless meant the shadows and monsters, the crosses on the walls, the hollow sound of freedom. Yes, he knew that feeling well. He knew it because he had seen it through her eyes too. With purposefully slow steps, he moved to her.  âYes,â Joseph said, âOften.â When he was close enough, he took her hand, tentatively, still keeping his eyes on hers. He wouldnât ask her where those had come from. They had only just met, after all. But in this case, would it have mattered anyway? She had gotten to see glimpses of his life. Did strangers apply anymore? There was no handbook for this, no article about it. No piece of advice. He simply knew she understood, on level, of who he was. And he could understand her.  âI used to be tired of it. There was no real escape. There was always someone to hear. There was no sharing. I heard everyone and no one heard me.â He covered her hand with his other one. The smell of coffee drifted in the air, mingling with thoughts. You know something about that, donât you? Those barriers. Â
