i know that loyalty to corporate is dead. How long should I stay at a dead end job before I start applying for something new? I was told humans reviewing my resume generally think anything less than 12 months makes you look like a flake, but I get the feeling that’s dated advice. How the fuck do you get past the robots these days when you need 300 shots to land one 10 minute phone interview?
Well first of all... you should start applying elsewhere IMMEDIATELY. It's hard out there for a bitch right now, and there's no guarantee you'll get a new job right away. My spouse has been unemployed and job hunting for over a year, and I have friends who have been job hunting for just as long. So start now, don't wait, and take the search process seriously.
Our next big essay is on why it's hard to find a job right now. But as a preview: you're right about the robot gatekeepers. Employers are using ATS (applicant tracking systems) and other forms of AI to weed our candidates and it's a wildly imperfect system. Here are a few tricks to try:
Never apply through Indeed, Monster, LinkedIn, or another job listing aggregator if you can help it. Instead, go straight to the company's website to apply.
Use key words and phrases from the job description in your resume, cover letter, and other application materials. This will satisfy the robot gatekeepers.
If at all possible, network your way into an opportunity. It sucks, but it's still one of the best ways to get hired. Scour LinkedIn for any possible connection and get them to put a good word in for you with the humans.
