opposite ends of the universe

Author’s note: A lot of people loved this idea, and so did I, so here you go. Also, tagging baethazar as promised!

“I’ll have an extra-large popcorn and two cokes, please.”

Dean prayed that he sounded more confident than he felt as he grinned up at the blue-eyed beauty standing behind the counter.

The guy couldn’t be much older than Dean, looking to be in his early twenties. ‘Castiel Novak’ the name tag read. Dean resisted the urge to let out a whistle of appreciation when the guy smiled and nodded before turning around to get Dean’s snacks, so that Dean could take a closer look at the guy’s ass. Not that Dean was observing Castiel Novak’s ass. Nuh-uh, not at all. That would’ve been rude. Rude and tasteless.  

“There you go, enjoy your evening.” Castiel said in a surprisingly deep voice as he handed Dean the cokes and popcorn.

Their fingers brushed, and that voice alone was plenty to make Dean weak in the knees. Dean stared at Castiel, dazed.

“I ehm- yeah… Yeah, you have a nice…” Dean stuttered, not having a chance to finish that train wreck of a sentence because his younger brother Sam was smacking his arm to get his attention.

“Seriously, Dean? I don’t want to miss the movie because you’re flirting again, come on!”

Dean glared at his brother, but to his relief, Castiel had already moved on to another customer. Chances were that he hadn’t heard Sam’s comment, thank god for small miracles. Someone needed to remind Dean to never go out in public with a nosy fifteen-year-old ever again.

“For your information, Sammy… I wasn’t flirting.” Dean grumbled indignantly as they crossed the lobby.

Sam responded with a trademark eye roll, disbelievingly shaking his head.

Since the day he was born Castiel had been different. Not the kind of different that people would want to brag about. When most babies were brought into the world they screamed, or cried, or made some type of noise to announce their arrival. Castiel simply opened his eyes to the world around him and stared. The baby blues drank in his surroundings but he never opened his mouth to articulate it.

Growing up was no different. When the terrible twos came they simply went with little to no fuss. Keeping to the corners of rooms and watching as if he was storing all the information away in his head but making no intention to ever verbalize it. His parents were concerned but the specialists they saw said that Castiel could speak, he simply chose not to.

Rounding into teenage years he spoke up but only so that he could be left unbothered. The few words he did grace the people around him with were soft and polite in nature. When boys his age were rowdy and social, Castiel was isolated by his own choice.

Cas tells Dean, with no hesitation, that even after Sam and everyone else Dean loves is gone he will still be there and look at that second pic - he actually has tears in his eyes.

You know what I find so interesting about Cas’ words to Dean?

Cas has thought about this… a lot. He has made a decision that he is never, I repeat, never going to leave Dean’s side. He has contemplated it, planned it, and firmly resolved that this man standing in front of him, covered in blood and reeking of Lucifer’s curse, is his future by his own choosing. It has been years since heaven gave him any orders regarding the Winchesters, but Castiel, on his own, decided that come what may, he will stay with Dean. And that might mean centuries of trying to stop him from killing his way through Cain’s bloodline, but Castiel is absolutely willing to do this. 

He could go live out his days in heaven, enjoying the eternal Tuesday afternoon of the kite flying man and leave Dean to this mess because the Mark of Cain has nothing to do with Cas. This is not his mess to clean up. But instead, Cas declares to Dean that he has thought about and made the decision that Dean is his mission for… well pretty much forever since at this point they are both immortal.
