vs. Daisy Buchanan (The Great Gatsby)

Problematic because: "She married Tom Buchanan while Jay Gatsby was serving in WW1, even though she’d promised to marry Gatsby. Then she has an affair with Gatsby, but won’t leave Tom for him. Then, she hits Tom Buchanan’s mistress with a car and lets Gatsby take the fall for it, which leads to him being killed." Propaganda: "What exactly did she do wrong? She’d only dated Gatsby for one month when she agreed to marry him. He had no money, she was rich, her family wouldn’t have approved. Sure, she didn’t leave Tom for Gatsby even though her relationship wasn’t healthy. But divorce was still incredibly stigmatised in this time period, and she was a wealthy socialite. Tom was a polo player, this would have been a big deal. And Gatsby was not exactly a safe alternative. He did literally everything in his life (mansion, parties, bootlegging) with the goal of her love. Kind of toxic? Lovebombing, one might say? Did I mention he’s a bootlegger? “Yeah, let me leave my reliably rich, high reputation husband whom I have a CHILD with for some bootlegger who’s obsessed with me because we dated for a month. That’ll go well.” She cheated on Tom? He cheated on her! And he brought her own cousin to meet the mistress! She clearly didn’t mean to kill Myrtle, that was an accident. Gatsby wouldn’t have let her take the fall even if she’d wanted to; he was obsessed with her. He’s a rich criminal, how was she to know he’d end up getting murdered for it? Daisy Buchanan did nothing wrong!!!"
